Help!! 2 1/2 Year Old Constantly Tired and Body Rash!!

So I took my 2.5 year old in last week for a body rash and really baggy eyes. They said it was more then likely her way of fighting off a virus and probably eczema. However, now she is constantly saying she is tired and the rash isn't any better. It's all over her legs, arms and belly. It is very bumpy, prickerly and reddish in color. It doesn't seem to bother her but it is so prominent. She must say 15 times a day that she is sooo tired and wants to go to bed. She doesn't seem to want to eat much either these days and although she is by no means overweight, she has gained weight. We're taking her in to doctor tomorrow, but I can't sleep thinking about it. Any suggestions? Ideas?!?!?!?

What can I do next?

Please be VERY assertive with the doctor.

The doc has already said "It's eczema" and let it go. So when you go back you may get the "She's already been seen and we told you then...." eye-rolliing attitude that some doctors have.

Be assertive. Ask them to consider and possibly test for strep; allergies; hives; other viruses; scarlet fever. Sit right there and TELL them what you want them to rule out. The fact that she is gaining weight without eating much is telling -- yes, kids do grow and gain, but if her weight gain seems sudden, that is not normal.

I cannot believe that they said eczema for a whole-body, bumpy red rash.

I also can't believe they are crediting her extreme tiredness to "fighting off a virus" unless they also tested for viral infections and gave her antiviral medication. (And if they gave her an antibiotic, change doctors now-- antibiotics do nothing for viral infections.)

Demand to be seen today and do not be afraid to be "that mom" who gets bold with them.

'Rash' and 'tired' turn up at least 17 things on an online symptom checker.
Could be mono or something else.
See what the Dr says.
At least she has no fever so far.

I would get allergy testing. My MIL's neighbors son has major ezcema and they can not figure it out.. all the testing has come back negative..

Next she is trying gluten free diet (she has done everything else). My hope is that she figures it out.. so he gets the relief

Is this new, or has she been fighting something all winter? are there new foods, laundry soap etc..?

Good luck.

Has she taken an antibiotic recently? I had mono when I was in my early 20s. I also happened to have strep throat at the same time so I was prescribed an antibiotic. Shortly after I broke out in a rash very similar to what you're describing. My Oscar the time role me the mono iris sometimes reacts to certain antibiotic and causes a rash.

I'm not saying I think you're daughter has mono. I really have no idea what it could be, but since others mentioned mono I thought I'd throw this out there. I hope your daughter (and you!!) feel better soon. Let us know what happens.

Please have a throat culture done. If he has strep he needs to be treated with Antibiotics.

My son was doing that all winter. He also has a lot of eczema, and he is 27 months. I was/ still am pretty sure the rash and the trouble sleeping (and thus the sleepiness) were related to systemic allergies, which run in my family (mom and sister mainly.) We did the skin tests and nothing came up, but our pediatric allergist said that at this age, that is hardly definitive. I have never heard of an eczema like rash being explained away in such vague terms as fighting off a virus. I hope you have the freedom to see other doctors. Definitely an allergist. I also took my son to an ENT to see if he had adenoid problems, because he was so tired all winter, but he didn't. But different doctors will give you different perspectives, and hopefully make sure nothing is missed.

I would have them run a blood panel on her. She could be anemic(sp?). It is not normal for her to be tired like that. Oh another thing that just popped into my head, it might even be mono. They can tell that by testing her blood for that virus. My little one had mono, but I do not recall a rash with it. Definitely have them run blood tests that way they don't miss something!

you need to demand that they run test to find out what virus. or get a second opinion. a friend of mine had a similar problem with her daughter. the girl was two years old and every two weeks she would get sick with fever and vomiting. after three months she was fed up with the doctors saying it was a stomach virus. after throwing a fit in the office they finally ran test and found out the girl was allergic to glueton. don't worry to much your child could have just, an allergy to your laundry detergent. just demand that you want some test ran and if they refuse go some where else

First I would have to ask if she sleeps well at night and if she naps still or not. 2nd it isn't excema my 7 yr old has it and it is usually on the inside of your arms, behind your legs. That sounds to me like hives. How is she with drinking? I am glad she is going to the drs I would be pushy about it being something else. Good luck tomorrow

Look up scarlet fever and some other childhood issues, like roseae.
