Mom/student/full-time job: With the load you're carrying responsibility-wise, it's no wonder your top priority hasn't been in losing 10 lbs., as weight-loss takes a lot of work. Please give yourself a break.
That was the reasonable-me talking. My self-talk would be/has been the same as yours, so I'll tell you the most effective approach that worked for me.
I wasn't out to lose weight -- I was out to lower my cholesterol. After a year of researching and contemplating, I committed to the Atkins diet (the whole diet, not just the OMG!-soliciting induction phase that most don't realize isn't the whole approach). I kicked my workout (30 min. vigorous aerobic, plus 20 min weight-bearing) up from 3 to 5 days per week and stuck with the diet 100% faithfully for 6 months, during which time my HDL raised, my LDL lowered, and my triglycerides HALVED.
But what you're interested in is the auxiliary 13 lb. weight loss. I didn't feel the need to lose that much, but the vanished pockets of fat on hips, thighs, and belly was a surprise I'd not achieved using my usual 1000 calorie/day routine to return to my wedding-dress weight after each baby. NOTE: I believe the increase in exercise played at least as significant a role, if not more, than the diet. Muscle burns calorie intake more efficiently than fat and my immune system has become a virtual armor against succumbing to illness.
Weight gets harder to lose as one ages; I did this when I was 46. I've since returned fruit to my diet, which has improved my overall well-being, though at the cost of a few additional pounds.
Students typically have access to great equipment through their school; take advantage of it. Reward yourself with a little bauble for every X lbs lost en route to your goal. Change your mind-set to embrace hunger-pangs as trophies of self-achievement.
Whatever approach you take, sweat hard, drink lots of water, limit calorie intake, and document every morsel that goes into your mouth WHEN YOU EAT IT, not hours later. Do those things and you WILL reach your goals. We tend to lie to ourselves when we wouldn't insult another human in that way, so commit to honesty and be true to yourself. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Go buy the book today.
