After years of mediocre vacuums, I may be ready to spend more to get a long lasting, great vacuum. My only requirements are that it is bagless, upright, stair attachment and has incredible suction (we have dust allergies). We do not have pets, just kids! :) I'm not sure I can justify spending hundreds for a dyson (unless they really are that superior), but my current Eureka Comfort Clean-Oh, which was rated well by consumer reports, is driving me crazy.
Do you have one you love? Or one I should stay away from?
For those with Dysons - which model do you have? One with a ball or without? There seems to be quite a price difference between models.
We have a dyson and I love it...I actually got it on sale at Kohl's and then was able to use a 30% off coupon. They had a deal where you earned $10 Kohls cash for every $50 you spent (which we needed to spend on clothes for an upcoming vacation)...so we ended up paying $285 for a $600 vacuum cleaner and it is worth every penny. The unit is relatively light weight and all the attachments are easy to use. The suction is incredible!!

I have hated every vacuum I ever had, untill...the dyson. Love it. Only complain is that the hand tool is not so easy to use, but it is great otherwise, and so much better than any other I have ever used.

I have the Dyson Animal. LOVE IT! I have kids and pets! I have had it for years, so I can only imagine they have gotten even better. The only complaint I have is the suction is so strong, that when I first got it I had a hard time vacuuming the stairs with the attachment. It pulled a lot. Now it is looser, so no more complaints!

i have the dyson ball animal that i use on our main floor(carpet, wood, and tile), have had it for almost 5 years and i love it. it's a little on the heavy side, but it has GREAT suction and the wand attachment gets used EVERY time i vaccum... i am a total OCD neat freak, have bad allergies, and we have four indoor dogs(and three kids!). i have an oreck from our old house, it's a great vaccum but the attachments are a PAIN if you need to get into a crevice or something - i kept it and use it upstairs though, which is carpet only, that way i don't have to carry a vaccum up and down the stairs!

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, our Animal Dyson. Have had it for 5 + years and it works every time and it DOES THE JOB! I do use a handheld DirtDevil for the stairs. Our stairs are super steep and I'm afraid of dropping the vacuum if I were to bring it up.
Maybe you can find one second hand? Craigslist? At a vacuum shop that sells them refurbished with a waranty?
Either people love them or hate them. Maybe you can test drive one at a vacuum shop, then find someone who hates, theirs. :)

I felt like you did about dyson...then I borrowed my neighbors and IMMEDIATELY bought O.. love, Love, LOVE it!
Can you borrow O.? If so, vacuum with your Eureka THEN go over it with a Dyson...you won't believe what it sucks up!

Looooove my Dyson. I was a little hesitant about shelling out the money for it too, but it is worth EVERY SINGLE CENT. And I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

I broke down and got a Dyson's this year after moving into a very carpeted house. I'm in LOVE! It not only does a great job of cleaning but it's so user friendly and weighs nothing. It gets my vote. It has a ball.

I agree with most of your responses... I have a Dyson and it's fantastic. I know you said you don't have pets, but we have two ALWAYS shedding dogs... and this has been the only vacuum to keep the hair at bay. highly, highly recommend! good luck!

LOVE our Dyson slim. Would never own another vacuum. Hubby thought I was crazy when I wanted to spend *gasp* "how much money" on a vacuum & now he is the avid vacuumer around our house & feels like being in their commercial every time he uses it. Can not recommend it enough, not one negative feature or experience with it. Truly the best money you will spend & you will be amazed at what it cleans-up.

The Dysons apparently have it! (I am in that camp too!) Everything you asked for, the Dyson has! Can't add much more but I have the original basic model (no ball) for 6-7+ years...great vacuum, never had a problem. I can do the stairs with just the wand out + attachment. I have noticed that these ones are coming down in price...you will just have to check around...Macy's had one cheap not too long ago...they may be more expensive but they last so much longer so I feel you could really be saving in the long run. You can take them all apart if necessary. The only minor drawback is that they collect hair on the front wheel roller and you have to periodically cut/clean that off. It does not affect the suction or operation per se, it is just kind of gross. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure I have one of the original Dyson's (yellow, no ball, owned a little over 3 years) and I am not in love with it. The best feature has to be the hard floor setting, doesn't kick any dirt back at you, sucks it all up. I love to use the hose to dust and I find this to be really difficult with the Dyson, the design of the tools limits the ability to get into crevices (under the tv, etc) and the handle is bulky and awkward. I think I ordered a replacement hose when it was 2 years old, ours developed a tear at the top, just under the coupler from using the hose and pole to vacuum under the counters and baseboards.

I have a Dyson - DC14 Animal. Got it at Costco - much less than anywhere else. Yes, it was expensive but totally worth it! I have a German Shepherd and she sheds a small dog each week. From the day I got the Dyson, I have not regretted it. I was leery about paying that much for a vaccuum but once I used it for a month, I was sold and I will never go back to anything else! Everyone I know that has bought one has not regretted spending the money on it. I have owned Hoovers and Eureka and Bissel but this is really the one that has worked for me. I have not tried Orek but do hear that is a good one too - pricey as well though.
I love my Dyson and will always have one.

I have the Dyson animal, it is the ball style. It is absolutely, 100% worth every penny I paid for it. I tried other 'bagless' styles and they only lasted a couple of years. The Dyson is lightweight, easy to maneuver, and much easier to use on my stairs than anything else I've ever tried. I was amazed at how much it pulled from my carpet compared to my old vacuum. I will never, ever have anything other than a Dyson again. Anything else is a waste of money IMO.

We got the Bissell Momentum Cyclonic last year and it's fantastic! Really, really picks up the dirt. It had the best user reviews I could find when I bought it (even better than Dyson) and a reasonable price. It's holding up great to a lot of use.

I recently purchased the Bissell CleanView Helix Deluxe Vacuum. This was a relatively cheap vacuum compared to a Dyson. Think it was about $70 at Fred Meyers. I have been amazed at the amount of dirt it picks up!

I have a Dyson and love it. We have all hardwood floors and stairs and it has a lovely floor attachment that makes floor vacuuming a breeze. With 2 cats and a Border Collie, I vacuum daily. We do not have the "ball" version, ours is yellow/gray but is at least 3 years old and not a problem yet. I wash the filter often and it dries quickly and I'm back to vacuuming in no time. IMHO, it's totally worth the extra $. Good luck!

Dyson animal. Absolute best vaccuum I have ever had. I LOVE to vaccuum with it. Make sure you do the regular maintenance on it though - I didn't do that with my old Dyson and it lost suction after a couple of years due to a failed belt (which cost almost as much to replace as a new Dyson, so I just upgraded).

We have a Dyson and absolutely love it. Ours is the "animal" without the ball and it really does a great job cleaning up after our two kids, two indoor cats (read, shedding twice a year) and constantly shedding siberian husky. Yes, definately worth the extra cost.
