I was just given lots of valium, so much so that it was like trying to walk very drunk afterward. Would have preferred twilight sedation. It was not painful, just unpleasant, that's why I would have preferred the twilight sedation. Afterward it was similar to a very heavy period; not that bad, really, but probably depends how far along you are. The bleeding didn't last more than a week or so.

I am not sure but with mine, it was the easiest and quickest I have woken up from a procedure. I felt a little tired at first but was great the rest of the day and did not go to bed that night til past 9.......

I was told that if you do it in the office without anesthetic that it is way painful.

No I was not. Mine was for a miscarriage at 6 weeks.
Mine was done in office.
But the Doc did a quick shot of 'numbing' down there before the procedure.
It was fine.
I did not bleed that long...

I have had two D&Cs. The first was after my 6th child was born. I had retained part of the placenta and bled for 10 weeks until they did it. Because I was still nursing her, I requested that they do a spinal instead of general anesthetic because I had a friend who had done hers that way. It was better for me because then I didn't have to pump and dump for a couple of days after to get the meds out of my milk. (I am not a very good pumper). But with my second one a year later, they put me to sleep to do it. Both recoveries were fairly easy....although I did have to stay in the hospital much longer with the spinal as I couldn't walk. Having done it both ways I think that being asleep is much easier to deal with emotionally. I wasn't traumatized by my first but there were sounds and visual images that are a bit distrubing to some. Talk to your doctor and see your options.

No, you don't have to be put to sleep. Depending on your doctor they may suggest it because it can be quite painful, but you don't have to have anesthesia.

I had to be put to sleep when I had a miscarriage and there was extra tissues remaining. I was told that it's impt to be sleeping because it's not safe to move around during this type of procedure, hence the general anesthesia.
