I have noticed no other symptoms, but for the first time ever today i noticed molasses colored ear wax in both of my 16-mo-old's ears. She does every so often reach for her ears, but i've never noticed extended pulling or probing at all. i cleaned a bit of it out from the outer portion. does anyone know if this is normal?

What can I do next?

Ask your Doctor, but her ears seem to be self-cleaning.
as you know, it is usually NOT recommended to clean babies/children's ears with q-tips... it just pushes the ear wax further in, compacting it.

Here's a link about it:

Just clean her OUTER ear.

When ears have wax balls built up, the ear will often push it out (no I don't know how they do this), but then you feel a "tickle" and when you reach to feel your ear, a wax ball is deposited there. Voila! (okay I know this because this very same thing happens to me. My Hubby thinks it's funny. My Doctor says my ears are 'efficient.') Ha, ha.

Yes, ear wax is molasses colored.
I say it's normal.
But check with your Doctor in case, since this is your young child.

take care,
Susan

Hi K., My son also gets this and our pediatrician told me that it was just oxidation. Nothing to worry about, but it never hurts to call the Dr.

My son is 3 and this happened a few months ago. I just watched him carefully to see if he was bothered by his ears. He didn't seem to notice and wasn't any more aware of his ears than normal. I just cleaned the outside too (it was only one ear, but the whole outside was completely gooped up... really gross and somewhat scary). He had a cold for a few days prior and a slight fever the days before the wax showed up, so I figured the fever during the night melted it and sent it out of the canal. The color was definitely molasses and I'm happy to say that months later he's just fine... had no more wax after that and it seems that I'm not the only one who's experienced this. So, I think you're good to go. Thanks for posting this one... I was still kind of wondering about that episode a while back, and now I feel 100% validated. Best wishes to you!

My 13 month old has it too, from time to time...weird but, I'd say, normal!

I was told there was 3 different types of ear wax. White dry & flakey, yellow flakey, and yellow orange mushy ick. I would say she were fine unless you get a wet runny yellow crusting comeing from her ear, then she likely has an infection. Try google.
