My 20 mo. Old is very miserable right now with cold and cough. I have a Children’s Dimetapp Cold & Cough at home; does anyone know if I can give it to him and how much (he’s 22 lbs)? its Saturday night and I don’t want my son to go to bed feeling sick and us to have a not so good night.
Any helpful comment will be appreciated.

I would say not a good idea, he's too young, I would stick to just giving him some children's tylenol or ibuprophen. What I would do is call his pediatrician's office...even though it's Sat. night they always have a doctor on call, you can call and leave a message and they'll call you back to tell you if it's safe or not. Otherwise, I wouldn't risk it.

I wouldn't use Dimetapp. That's potentially dangerous for his age. I know how you feel. I feel helpless when my boys are sick. My son is 24mos old. With just a cold, you should really let it run its course. Is he running a fever? If so, tylenol or motrin will be good. Otherwise, you'll have to let his body handle it. It's hard I know. He'll be ok though. I know you're in OH, but I am going to send you a link to my pedi's website and it actually has on there tips of what you can do with your children with a common cold and when to take them to the doc/ER. I hope this helps. Hope he feels better soon. :-)

The info is in the 'eye soring' blue print. oye...I'm going to have to email them and have them change that. It bothers my eyes.

Hi DS,

Dimetapp can cause horrible nightmares and rarely helps as much as you want it to. Elderberry syrup is good for a youngster his age as well as electrolytes. Use a humidifier and prop him up to sleeps so the congestion doesnt all settle in his head.

Chiropractic care will help a lot as well. I know you can't do anything like that until Monday but if he's still feeling bad get him to one as soon as possible. If you don't have one go to upcspine.com and find one in your area. It's amazing how it can help your immune system fight off these nasty things!

God bless!
M.

You really shouldn't give it to him w/o checking with his pedi.

When my kids were that age- and still- we use(d) a Pediacare Gentle Vapors Plug-in Unit. It works even better than cold meds IMO, and doesn't wear off after 4-6 hrs.

Here's some info. on it below.

Hope your little guy feels better soon!!

You can probably use some Vick's Vaporub or the Vaporub patch - it worked well with my stepsons when they were smaller (they were old enough and big enough to take oral cough medicines but refused to because they hated how they taste). A humidifier/vaporizer can help too, and you might be able to give him some Benadryl if his nose is really runny (but check with your pediatrician about dose - and some kids get hyper on it instead of sleepy). If he has a fever, you can use Tylenol or Motrin. But anything else I would stay away from at this age.

All childrens cold medicine for kids under 4 or 5 has been taken off the shelves. My pharmacist said I could use kids mucinex, but I don't remember the dosage. I don't remember the dosage. You can buy organic stuff at the health food store and it's for any age.

I prefer mucinex childrens multi symptom cold. It stops her coughing very quickly. My daughter is 4 but I've been giving it to her for a long time. My pedi says a half tsp is fine but of course ask your dock first.

Try 1/2 tsp.
That should help.
