Hi Ladies,
Sorry if the is TMI... but I have a yeast infection. YUCK! I am also still breastfeeding my 14 mo old three times a day. (Really two the third one is just a comfort suckle.) Im really senesitive to the over the counter vaginal meds so my midwife called in a prescription for diflucan for me. She was kind of ambigous about whethr or not is was safe during breast feeding. I have a done a lot of research and the opinions go in either direction. What I was wondering is if any of you have taken diflucan and continued to nurse?

Thank you.

Have you considered cutting out sugar to combat the yeast infection? It's very difficult to do, but can be very effective.

Hi A.!

I took it for a fungal infection on the skin while my son was nursing, and it was totally fine. No lasting effects for either of us. I also took a liver support that my naturopath recommended and my MD was in favor of. My MD also tested my liver every so often, as I had to take the Diflucan for several weeks. Both my doctors were completely unconcerned about it with nursing. Good luck with your infection!

Best,
L.

The only medication that would not be good for nursing are those for chemo treatment. Many doctors will tell you to pump and dump, but then, 99.9% of doctors know nothing about breastfeeding.

You are safe to nurse with Diflucan!

Hi A.,
I see others saying the same thing but just wanted to let you know I have taken diflucan while nursing for thrush. I took it with my older daughter when she was about 3 months and she took nyastatin and then I just took 2 doses of diflucan (weeks apart) with my 5 month old, again for thrush. It has worked fine for us with no side-effects. It is what they prescribe for thrush which would be for breast feeding moms. Good luck. M.

P.S. My OBGYN has also recommended yogurt for a yeast infection. I just inserted a bit of plain yogurt with a syringe. A bit gross but it worked and no worse than ingesting a medication that I don't really know what it is or does!

I took some kind of systemic anti-fungal because my daughter and I had thrush while breastfeeding. It may have been diflucan. I was told they don't normally give it for thrush, but it's what they give to meningitis patients as it's the strongest anti fungal available and we had a really bad case that wasn't clearing up from the topical solutions. That was 10 years ago, and I was breastfeeding her exclusively then as she was a tiny baby and go no nutrition for anything else, and all was fine. But the yeast issues continued with recurrent vaginal yeast infections, and then I recently went on a really restrictive diet of only vegetables and meat for 3 weeks, and saw what was apparently candida (white balls in stool) coming out as I wasn't feeding it with sugar or starch. My point is to beware of underlying yeast overgrowth in your gut and intestines. There are also candida cleanses that you might try.

I remember that my obgyn would not let me take that until I was done breast feeding. I would take to your pharmisist! he/she would know! Good Luck!

It is frequently used to treat thrush in the breast tissue of nursing moms and should be safe to take.
Another option would be to try frequent vinegar solution sitzbaths and yogurt-tampons, a midwife once recommended this to me and works like a charm for me.

My daughter got thrush in her mouth, and nystatin wouldn't touch it. She gave it to me and we passed it back and forth for a while, and her doctor put her on diflucan. But I kept getting it. So finally I went to my doctor and got a prescription for diflucan for me. Cured everything. She was 2 months old. So I'd say do it. It will pass to her, but it's not like you are doing it for weeks and months. She needs a healthy mamma.

Hi A., I took Diflucan while breastfeeding my 2 month old for almost a month. My doctor thought I had thrush on my nipples (I had all the symptoms) and everything else we tried didn't work. I finally went to a naturapathic doctor and he figured out I actually had an infection (due to cracking and difficulty latching), not thrush. Long story short I took 21 days of Diflucan I didn't need to. I saw no side effects in my daughter and I read somewhere that they give diflucan in way larger doses than they would get in your breastmilk to infants before they have surgeries and yeast infections. That comforted me. I was crazy upset to be on meds since I don't even take Tylenol usually but so far I can say my baby was none the worse. All the doctors are really vague about whether it's safe or not. My naturopatic dr said Diflucan really works great, on YEAST! I hope you get better soon. RB
