Diaper Woes

I don't even know where to start. About 1 and 1/2 months ago, my dauther got an awful diaper rash. We put desitin on it and frequently changed her diapers. Then it got really bad, and it didn't look like a regular rash anymore. It was large red pimples. So I called the ped. and tried to set up an appointment. They patched me through to the nurse, who said I didnt' need an appt., that it sounded like a yeast infection. She told me to buy some lotrimin and some hydrocortizone and mix the two and use that for a week and it would clear up. So I did that for about 3 days until the pimples were now the size of dimes and were just open sores. I called the ped. again and demanded an appt. They told me that she had impetigo and prescribed meds to take care of it. It cleared up within three days. Then about 1 week later she got another rash. When we went to her nine month check up the doc said that it looked like she had a yeast infection caused by the meds for the impetigo. He prescribed Nyastin, a cream. I used that for about 4 days, and she started getting sores again!! I called the doc again and got another appt. This time they said she had double ear infections and a staff infection! So once again she was on meds (this time augmentin) and the staff infection cleared up. Now it is 2 weeks later and she has yet another rash, that is starting to look like a staff infection or impetigo. I am at a complete loss for what to do. I give her baths every day, she is changed frequently and still this keeps coming back. Has anyone had anything similar happen to their kids? Am I doing something wrong?????

What can I do next?

Hi,
My son is allergic to milk and when he has any milk products he gets an awful rash and diarrhea. The Dr said to give him Benadryl for a couple days and this worked! Good luck to you.

I'm not sure if this will help because it has never gotten that bad with my kids, but once the rash is gone, I like to use Caldesene. It's a powder that prevents diaper rash. It was recommended to me by a pharmacist who is also a mom. Once she gave me the prescribed ointment, she recommended the powder as well and I never had any severe diaper rash problems again. Nothing that required a prescription, anyway. It comes in a pink powder container. Good luck!

R. I would try another doctor. Your doctor should not be prescribing Meds without actually examining your child. Best of luck. Oh yeah and like someone said, maybe changing the diaper brand and watch out for the type of baby wipes you use. My used baby wipes that have scents to it and it created a rash. Now I use wipes that have no scents and are alcohol free.

My son had lots of diaper rashes. For the bath, buy Aveeno. There is a baby Aveeno (can't remember the name) it has a pink cap, and it's hard to find. Anyway, it has oatmeal in it and helps with the rash. Also put baking soda in her bath. It helps to neutralize the pH of the skin. My doc said to give like 2 baths a day. Just let her sit and play in the water 30 min at a time. Also, desatin does nothing for diaper rash. It actually made my son's worse. Try balmex or triple paste.

Im a mother of twin gurls that r 16mnths old today. One of my gurls had gotten a rash down there too, but it didn't get to that point of what ur daughters did. But to me it sounds like she might be allergic to something. I mean if u keep changin her and giving her a bath on a regular basis, then it might not be what the docs say it is, i know docs r smart and all, but i've had doctors tell me wrong things before. But I myself am thinkin she might be allergic to either one the medications the doctors keep prescribing, or maybe the diapers. but if u've used the diapers since she was a newborn, then that might not be it. I dont think you doin anything wrong, it sounds like everything your doin is good, but to me it sounds like she might be allergic to something. But dont qoute me..hehe. just thought i would speak up and say what i think thats all. thnx for listenin

I just want to add that too many antibiotics, especially at a young age, are not good.
I just read a new article about this, how the overuse of antibiotics is causing more problems including ineffectiveness for future infections. The article said that <<in the old days>> people let their bodies get over many situations rather than resort to antibiotics, but today the overuse is causing resistent germs and our ability to fight off germs is becoming more difficult. But I do agree with all the advice given to you so far...I hope it works and do let us know. E.

First, I would suggest seeing a new doctor, who will actually see your child before diagnosing her!

We have never had a diaper rash as bad as yours, but when she does have them, I find that regular wipes can aggravate it. One thing I have done for a rash is made my own wipes with just folded paper towles and tap water. I used those, and once dry, I put on some desitin. This also really helped alleviate some pain from the rash, that I think was coming from the wipes with alcohol in them

Have you changed diaper brands. It could be that. Or change the soap you are using she could be allergic to it and just getting a rash. My daughter got lots of rashes that the doctor could not pinpoint it and she just kept on getting it. But I canged diaper brands and different soap and different formula's and it seemed to work. I found out by doing one thing at a time I narrowed it down to the diapers and formula. Hopefully this helps. One time my daughter had this rash all over her body and the doctors could not figure it out. To this day they still don't know what it was.

One of the problems with yeast infections is that antibiotics make them worse. If you are feeding solids add yogart to her diet. There is a wonderful sauve that many health food stores carry that is called "All Heal Sauve", it is soothing and protective at the same time. You may want to try that. Also I would find a doctor who does not diagnose over the phone!
