Diaper Services in LA?

Hi there!
I am an expecting mom looking for a great diaper service in LA, preferably on that does not treat there diapers with bleach!
I want to 'do the right thing' by cutting down on disposable diapers, but it seems the alternative is to wrap my baby in bleach soaked cloth. I unfortunately do not have a washer/dryer to clean my own. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

I am expecting in one week, and have done a lot of research on diapers. Found that diaper services are not much better than regular diapers for the environment (becuase of detergent, electricity, chemicals, etc needed for washing diapers).
Here is one of many articles i read:
http://www.organicauthority.com/pregnancy--parenting/preg...

The best solution i found was to use gDiapers. You can buy online (www.gdiapers.com) or you can buy at Whole Foods.

gDiapers have no chlorine, no perfumes. They are flushable, or you can garden compost the wet ones in one compost cycle, approximately 50 – 150 days.
Hope this is helpful.

We used dydee diapers for about 6-9 months with my son - they are the only service I found in LA. I think they use bleach BUT, i stopped after being persauded that the water used to wash cloth diapers, in a region with water shortages, is on balance more environmentally harmful than filling the landfill. Think about it before you decide. I tried "g dipaers", too - but they were a horrible mess with every poop - leaking out and all over the place. And the process of ripping, swirling and flushing twice for every diaper was a hassle and a big waste of water.

I was going to suggest using your own until I saw that you do not have a washer. But I will go ahead and tell you what I used just in case you get a diaper one day.

I bought g-diapers and non-bleached cloth that would fit right in the g-diaper pants. When I would go out I would use the g-diaper flushable refill. It worked great. Their are several cloth diaper yahoo groups including a g-diaper group.

I'm sure you will find one.

Good Luck,
D.

Dy-Dee Diaper Service is pretty much the only game in town. They do use bleach but claim that they retreat the water and recycle it so that it isn't entering the ground or public water system. Something like that. Any way, I use them but only get 40 per week because I find it easier to use a disposable when we're out. Actually, I also use gdiapers. Check out their website. I have a 3 month old boy and I find they leak a bit but my sister in law has a girl, same age, and she loves them. They run a bit big for newborns, though.
Hope this helps.

hi,
i'm not sure of the details of what chemicals (or not) they use, but Dy-Dee Diaper service is a really good one. Check them out at: http://www.dy-dee.com/ One thing to keep in mind about the environmental impact of cloth diapers is how much water is used to clean the diapers. Of course you would be reducing waste, but it's important to consider the whole picture. Just my 2cents.

hi!

i use dy dee diaper service. their website address is dy-dee.com. i love the service, and have been a customer for over a year now. you can order the waterproof diaper covers directly from them, or buy your own if you prefer wool, or cotton,... their website is pretty comprehensive as far as information on how to set up service and what the environmental impact is. i think they use a non-chlorine bleach. my daughter has an extremely sensitive tushie, and the dy-dee's cloth diapers don't bother her any more than any other diaper. hope this helps!

Take a look at www.dy-dee.com - I thought they had a page that explained their laundry process but I can't find it right now; you could call and ask if you can't find it on their site either.

I used Dy-Dee for about 2.5 years at which point I started doing cloth training pants on my own. I was very happy with their service.

Try Dydee Diaper Service. They wash and deliver, and we love them. I don't have their info handy, but I know we found them on the internet. Check it out!

Check out Dy Dee Diapers (http://www.dy-dee.com/). We use them and have been really happy with the service. We still use disposables for when we're out and about, but I actually really prefer the cloth. With a good service it's not any harder than disposables (you don't have to deal with any poo), and they don't use harsh chemicals like bleach which is good for baby (we haven't had any trouble with diaper rash) and the world she will grow up in. Good luck!

Congratulations on making the decision to cloth diaper! I have a 10 month old daughter, and have been using cloth diapers since day one. I also do not have a washing machine in my home, I use the public one in the parking garage. This is my advice: check out www.comfybummy.com. THis is truly one of the best sites and sources I have found for info on cloth diapering. The woman who runs the show has teleconferences regularly for people to ask questions. I found that the "Bum Genius" all in one diapers (the sized ones, not the one size fits all)are the most amazing cloth diapers ever. They do not require any plastic covering, they are just like disposables, with velcro tabs, but they are soft, and environmentally friendly. They so require a bit of expense in the beginning to purchase them, but you can register on the comfy bummy site so people can help you out at your shower...Also, I HIGHLY recommend getting a "potty pail" (www.pottypail.com) which is a sprayer to attach to your toilet hose that allows you to rinse your cloth diapers without even touching them, and a pail to throw them into....sounds complicated, but it isn't. My husband loves spraying the diapers. Men love spraying anything!

I just moved to the LA area but I lived with 3 in diapers in a small NYC apartment with a laundry that was a hike. I used the Seventh Generation non bleached diapers. They were disposable but not bleached. Loved them and they did not leak. Diaper services are not as green as you would expect. Check these out at Whole Foods. I was lucky enough to have them delivered through my online grocer but I bet that you can find a delivery service for these.

Good luck!
