I know this is going to sound crazy as I thought is was until I witnessed it for myself. But my grandson had the worst diaper rash I've ever seen, because of him being sick and on a bunch of antibiotics. My daughter started using Crisco (the hard kind in a can), on him and it went away within days.

When my daughter was a baby she constantly had a rash. I went back and forth to the doctor's office and tried everything on the market. I was going to fill on of the prescriptions the doctor gave me, when the pharmacist suggested mixing clotrimazole and hydrocortisone. I told him that I was willing to try anything at that point because she had started to bleed from the rash. I have used this combination since she was little and have passed it on to other family members for the last 13 years. It sounds funny but I don't know what I would have done if hadn't mixed me some up and I contiued to use it. After 2 days everything cleared up, it was amazing!!

Try this recipe for "Magic Butt Cream"
1 tube Neosporin
1 tube Lotrimin AF
1 tube Desitin
(store brand of each also works)
Mix all together in small bowl with lid that screws on. It helps it not to dry out.
My sisters doctor gave her this when my nephew had a bad rash. I have told other people and it has worked for them. Good Luck!

I tried all of those things too when my son got diaper rash and not one worked. My sister told me to try making a paste out of Mylanta and Aquafor. It really worked. The Mylanta will take the redness out caused by the acid in the urine and the Aquafor will soothe the irritation. I hope this helps!

Many times when this happens it is fungal, like a yeast rash. Try using an anti-fungal cream, it is over the counter at the drug store, so you don't need a prescription. It is very important to use it at least 5 times per day, after washing the area gently with warm water and mild soap first. If it is fungal, you will see the rash fade but it will have an outline-like border. You MUST keep using the anti-fungal cream until the border is gone for a whole week, or it will just keep coming back. Also, check you baby's mouth for signs of thrush, sometimes the two go together. If she does have thrush, the 'swish and swallow' liquid the pediatrician gives you can help clear up the bum-rash too, but use the anti-fungal cream on the rash as well. I hope this helps, let me know.

Hi:

My son had diaper rash that was so bad it bled! We finally found a product called 'Dr. Smith's'. This is hard to find but I believe Walgreen's sells it for about 12.00/tube. It worked when all else failed! Also, make sure that the wipes are clear water with no scent/alcohol. The best that I have found are Kirkland brand at Costco. Good luck - I feel for you 2! -Kath

Try Mylanta. It cuts the acidity so it doesn't hurt babies skin so bad. Like the other person said- mylanta mixed with Aquaphor or mylanta mixed with triple paste or the thicker desitin.

If diaper rash cream isn't taking care of it, it's a yeast infection. My son would get these - he would blister and bleed when I changed him. So terrible to see that. Go to the pharmacy and get "Lotrimin AF". Look on the back, it has to be the one that contains "Clotrimazole" as the mian ingredient. It will say "for jock itch" on the box. I know it sounds very weird, but it will completely heal the rash in about 2 days. When my son was a baby, I kept that on hand at all times because he got so many yeast infections on his bottom.

Also, I recommend this product for non-yeast diaper rashes:
http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Antiseptics/Ointme...
The carry it at Walgreens. Yes it's made for cow udders, but it works amazingly well!

I would call the doctor to verify if it's a yeast infection or not.

I also have a recipe from the NICU nurses from the hospital where my son was born. This recipe is mild enough to use on premees, but works very well - I never had to use any thing else on either of my kids:
3 Tablespoons Aquaphor
2 Tablespoons Mylanta
Mix together thoroughly. store in an airtight container - mixing can really take a long time (20 minutes or so by mashing with a fork), but it's really worth it. The Aquophor is a barrier cream that does not sting at all and the Mylanta neutralizes any acid (extremely important when you are dealing with liquid stools).

This stuff, along with airing her out, will work as a preventative and for treating current diaper rash. It will not treat a yeast infection.

Good Luck!

My doctor recommended this stuff called Triple Paste. It's expensive, but it's totally worth it. Our son had diaper rash so bad that he has pus spots on his bottom, and none of the other stuff (butt paste, desitin, etc.) would even stick to his skin. The Triple Paste is really thick, and you really have to slather it on. It doesn't have that medicated smell to it, either, which is nice, and it doesn't sting. Within one overnight application, he started clearing up. It was a miracle for our situation. I could never find this stuff at Walmart, only at CVS and Walgreens. Good luck!

could it be thrush that has gone from her mouth to her diaper area? If it is white-ish and nothing is working, it might be. Thrush can go from her mouth all the way down the digestive tract. If you can get to an old fashioned pharmacy or herbal store, get gentian violet. You can coat her mouth with it and it is absorbed down the digestive tract. You can also apply it to the diaper area. We used niastatin (?sp) with our second child for about 3 months. WE used gentian violet 1 time and it was gone. It can be causing her pain when she eats as well. It is purple (hence the name "violet") and will ruin anything it touches but we used it prior to bed and she had a purple mouth for one day (she is very fair skinned). But, happy baby after that. And, sense thrush is yeast, you can use it if you get a yeast infection as well.

It can't hurt to check in with the doc to be sure it isn't a yeast infection. Barring that, there are several things you can do to help.
For a few days, use warm, damp, soft washclothes - and not baby wipes. The wipes can further irritate baby's delicate skin.
When changing her diaper, instead of diaper creams, apply Maalox (liquid) with a cotton ball. The antacid coating will neutralize the acids in the urine/poop so she doesn't get burned further.
After a diaper change, try to leave the diaper off for a few minutes. Obviously, you can't just let her go naked or for a long time...as babies that age "go" a LOT. But for maybe 2-3 minutes after a diaper change, don't put the diaper back on. Just keep her swaddled in a baby blanket, then when the Maalox is dry, put a fresh diaper on.

Have you tried the Gold Bond for Babies' diaper rash?

Also, is it possible for your baby to go without her diaper? It would go a long way to allow air to get to the diaper rash to help heal it. It would not hurt to put her in cloth diapers until this heals. Cloth diapers allow air to get to her bottom. I don't recommend using the plastic cover-ups that go over cloth diapers because this basically defeats the purpose. The important thing is to allow air to hit her bottom, not moisture. Plastic diapers such as Huggies, Luvs, and Pampers along with other plastic-type diapers don't allow enough air to her bottom to give the air to breath.

If you are worried about her mattress on her crib you can always add a covering to it to prevent soiling; however, I would highly recommend adding a few fitted sheets to the crib mattress so the cover, which are usually made from plastic, won't interfere with the air she needs to help her bottom heal.

Keep adding the Desitin; however, I would contact your daughter's pediatrician to ask if there is a better, perhaps a prescription diaper rash product that might be more effective than OTC medications; however, please remember that air is the best medicine for diaper rash, especially when it gets bad.

At a month old, unless your daughter is progressing ahead of schedule, there should be little worry about her crawling about. Just be sure to put down extra blankets to catch any urine or feces with a sheet to prevent any rubbing that might irritate her bottom; also be sure to wipe her bottom from front to back to prevent any infections in the vaginal/buttock area with wet ones with the diaper rash. BTW, the front to back wiping is important even as our daughters grow into young women to prevent infections. This was one the first things I learned when I had my first child some 23 years ago.

Best wishes and I hope your daughter gets better. Please post to let us know as soon as she gets better. It's nice to hear when they get better. You can PM me if you like. I can't always get back to the areas where I post information for moms.... I have two daughters, 10 years apart in ages, so know that I feel for you and I hope all gets better soon.

BTW, the Gold Bond for babies used to have a Duck on it. The commercials for it used to show a mother putting her finger in the powder then in a glass of water to wet the finger and then showed the mother blowing her finger to show the powder/water blowing off her finger while the finger remained completely dry from using the baby Gold Bond powder for their bottoms.

I'll keep both of you in my thoughts....

Call your pediatrician to confirm what it is. Yeast infections can look like diaper rash - red bumps. If it's yeast they will likely prescribe Nystatin cream and it will clear up in a day or two. If it's not yeast and it really is diaper rash...I always use Triple Paste. Make sure the area is clean and completely dry..then apply the paste. It works wonders. Sold at Rite Aid, CVS and Babies r Us.

Budreaux's Butt Paste! I swear by it! It is a funny name, but Butt Paste is THE answer. NONE of those other brands compare. My son never really had much issue with diaper rash and I believe it is because I used the Butt Paste over anything else. If I ever saw a hint of red, Butt Paste was applied...along with very frequent diaper changes, of course. I never allowed him to remain in a wet diaper. I am not sure if I spelled Budreaux correctly, but it clearly says Butt Paste on the package. I can find it at any WalMart or Target. I hope this helps you. Try to go and get some right away! :)

I went through this with my daughter. dr prescribed an anti-fungal cream for my daughter. So when it reared it's ugly head again I tried an over the counter anti-fungal and it worked (it's where the foot cream is, it's used for athletes foot), but I saw the signs early the second time and started treating it immedately. Another thing that helped was Boudreaux's Butt Paste along with using cloth diapers instead of Pamper/Huggies or any other brand and letting her air out as much as possible.

Hi N.,

It looks like you've had some really good suggestions. I may repeat some of what was said but here's what I've done for my kiddos if there was diaper rash.

* Let her go bare bottom...

* Try switching diapers. If you're using cloth, could it be your laundry soap?

* Make a solution of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water and spray this on the bottom anytime you change her diaper. If it's a yeast rash, the vinegar stops the yeast. You can even soak a tissue or paper towel in the solution and insert it in the diaper when you change her. If it is yeast, give your little one powdered probiotic...sprinkle it on her bottom and under her tongue daily. If you're nursing, watch your sugar intake, take a probiotic daily and eat a sugar free yogurt. You can even put a good quality, live active culture yogurt on her bottom...no added sugars though.

I love Triple Paste.... If it's terrible there are prescriptions you might need (i.e. if it's a yeast infection). The other thing that worked REALLY well for my daughter who has very sensitive skin was to place her down naked as much as possible. I put garbage bags or an old shower curtain under a blanket and let her play rest, hang out. Air does wonders. Also make sure to change her often when she is diapered - I'm sure you are doing that. It could be yeast infection. The other thing is to get a bottle of mylanta and dab this on with a cotton ball. If you are using wipes stop. They could be adding to the irritation. You can get a pack of washcloths at walmart, for around $5. If you have a washer and dryer you can get by with one pack but if not then get two. Also if you use disposable diapers the could be sensitive to the brand you are using. Each of my kids were sensitive to disposables so we had to try different ones until we found one that worked. When I used cloth diapers, no problems. I did them my self.

With my kids, when I experienced a bad bout of diaper rash, I would let them air out as much as possible. Put down a waterproof cover, you know the ones covered with fabric, and let her go diaperless as long as possible. When you have to put cream on, make sure the skin is completely dry. This helps the cream adhere. I used Bordreaux's butt paste. You can get it at wal-mart. Also discuss your babies bowel movements with her pediatrician. Sometimes an allergy makes the bm's more frequent or more irritating. Good luck!

* Don't rub it with a baby wipe, hold her and clean her in the sink. Pat her softly to dry her.
* If you know that she went in her diaper already and you are done cleaning her, don't put any butt cream on her let the air get to it for a few minutes then apply the A&D cream and put a diaper on her.
* Check her often.
If this is still like this on Thurs. night then I would take her in or call the Dr. on Friday.

My oldest had problems with diaper rash. It turned out he was very sensitive to what I was eating, and the disposable diapers were extremely irritating to him. You may want to consider possible allergens in your diet if you're nursing, or formula if not. Cow's milk is a major allergen. I agree with the other moms about not using wipes and allowing her bottom to air dry. Give her some diaper free time, and seriously consider switching to cloth. I used cloth diapers for both of my girls and neither ever had a rash. If yeast is an issue, the lactobacillus in plain yogurt will clear it right up. Just put it on the rash. No need for prescriptions that may have unwanted side effects. You can also use essential oils for diaper rash. They can be purchased at Whole Foods or any local health food store. Mix 2 drops each of sandalwood, peppermint, and lavender in 4 tablespoons of a carrier oil, such as sweet almond and gently apply to the reddened area.

my daughter got a bad diaper rash around 3 months old & it turned out to be yeast. If you have the red spots that are fairly spread out and sometime a white spot in the center of the red. meaning that the rash is just as bad in the folds as it is on the hiney part. Hers would seem better throught the night cuz I would cake it on thick and she wasn't going as much as daytime then it would get worse during the day. My Dr. had me use Over the counter yeast cream for women only mix it with the desitin or vaseline so it sticks on where you want it. It should visibily improve in about 4-6 hours. I continued to use it for about a week even though rash cleared. This over the counter I'm told is not as harsh as the Nystatin. now later she was on some pretty heavy antibiotics and got a yeast infection & the cream just wasn't working as great and he did prescribe the nystatin and I mixed it with the diaper cream too, but she was probably a year by then. Course a call into the nurse with what your about to try can be good too so that if they do have reasons against it they can let you know. Now, anytime my daughter takes an antibiotic, we apply OTC monostat on her down there as a preventative since she is very prone. Ironically, she loves yogurt and ingests more than I think anyone should but Dr. doesn't feel it is a problem and it is the healthy kind not the kind that is chocked full of sugar. Plain with live cultures mixed with fresh organic fruit and pureed.

Provided that it's not a yeast infection, what worked for my DD's worst case of diaper rash was staying away from baby wipes, opting to use warm wet washcloths instead, and applying Triple Paste. It's a bit more expensive but really does work, and you don't need a prescription. It might take a few days but that would take care of it provided it's not an infection. I figured that DD's diaper rash was due to a reaction to peaches (they might have been too acidic). Given that your baby is only 1 month old, I would guess that's not the issue.

Letting her go diaperless as much as possible would help, too. My DD was over a year old when she had her bad diaper rash, so to leave her naked would have meant pee all over the house! lol

PS If it's a yeast infection then her diet needs to be changed as well. If yeast is present in the mouth, as thrush, or the vaginal area then her entire body is eaten up with it. Yeast is feed by sugar and if you are breastfeeding and getting to much or if you are formula feeding it is a possibility that yeast is present. Renew lotion will help with that as well because it has an ingredient that has an antifungal agent.

Don't put anything on it for a while. Gently cleanse the area with a warm wash cloth and pat dry. Then allow her to lay around with a bare bottom. As soon as she wets herself, or does the other, gently wash it off with a warm wash cloth, gently pat dry, and leave her bare bottom again. The area needs air. The items you've been using are obviously causing the rash to worsen. When you begin to see some healing, perhaps use a bit of something with a healing ingredient, but use sparingly. Even then I would be tempted to let her go bare bottom for a while. Good luck, and God Bless, Tico&Taco

I would definitely call her doctor but in the meantime when my children had bad diaper rashes I would bathe her and blot her dry and then let her air dry with a paste on her. I would lay a towel down in their bassonette or pack and play and then let them sleep with their bottom naked. Make sure it is not cold when you do this, keep the room warm or even keep a light blanket over her. She will probably pee so keep an eye on her to clean her up right away. Then our child's doc said to use either Beudreax's (sp?) Butt Paste or Triple Paste and cake it on her bottom. This may be from something she is eating, may be a yeast infection, may just be the pee or poop. Baby's poop is different at first. Try these things but call her doc in the am to get advice from them. Once it is gone I would think about putting a nice clear coating of Aquafor or Vaseline to work as a barrier from the poop and pee to her butt. Get rid of the rash first though. good luck!

I don't know how much juice she drinks but my little one gets a red hiney from having too much juice. I water it down to 4 parts water 1 part juice. I have also put her in an oatmeal bath, it seemed to soothe her. Just a warning don't make the water really warm because she will cry at first because it will sting due to the raw skin. Hope this helps.

take her to the doctor. If it's that bad they can give her prescription meds to help it heal. Poor little girl. I hope she gets better soon.

My son had a terrible bout of diaper rash one time. We tried all kinds of creams and ointments. He had been in the hospital (not related to the diaper rash) and even the staff was stumped as to why it wasn't clearing up. What eventually worked for us was washing him every day with a mild cleanser. Patting dry. Using soft gauze and plain water at diaper changes. Applying baby powder before putting a diaper on. I know there is a lot of concern about babies inhaling the powder so we did it carefully. There was much improvement even throughout the first day. Best wishes to you.

She most likely has a yeast infection. I know it sounds odd for a child her age, but it's very common and most probably the case. Bring her to the doctor and they'll give her a prescription cream- it'll be gone within two days.

I am glad your problem got solved.......but, for future children or other people reading this. My son (first child) had a blistering bleeding diaper rash that just wouldn't go away. We did take him to the ped eventually after all other OTC suggestions failed. He prescribed meds, etc. Nothing worked. Ended up after months of this that he was allergic to diapers! Who would have thought! We did find that Huggies were okay as long as we changed him every 45 minutes or less. Any longer and the rash would reappear. That was expensive, but I was just glad we figured it out!

Hi N.,
For lack of time I've not read any other responses but I want to give you this bit of advice.
I didn't know about Triple Paste when my oldest was born 5 years ago, and then it was only prescribed by pediatricians. It is now available OTC at Walmart, Target etc... and is the best Best BEST diaper rash cream out there. It's a little pricey, but I used it faithfully everyday on my other childrens hineys for the first 3 months of life, after every diaper change to prevent any diaper rash from starting in the first place. It works as a great barrier from all moisture and does not smear off like those other creams you mentioned. It will clear up any diaper rash in 24 hours!! I loved it. That's my suggestion for the future! I wish you and your baby all the happiness in the world!!!

So happy the problem is solved. As a preventative measure....u may want to try WELEDA Calendula Nappy Cream. It is truly awesome. I even used it on my son's facial rashes he later developed from teething, sweat etc....and used it on my itchy breakouts.

it could be a yeast rash, in which case the usual diaper rash creams will only make it worse. look for descriptions of yeast diaper rash online and maybe some sample photos. i used monistat cream for my baby, and it cleared up.

My twin girls both had a really bad rash the 1st 2 months (it was actually raw)...felt SO bad for them! Our Dr. gave us some samples of Calmoseptine (sp?). Its made for bed sores, diaper rash etc. You can get at CVS behind pharmacy counter or order online. Walgreens may carry too. It was just a horrible time cause they were pooping ALL the time. They are SO much better now that they are 4 months old...it gets better as they get older. Good luck!!!

if it's yeast you will need to use and anti fungal like lotrimin. Or try Mustela Diaper Barrier creme. It is more expensive ($10) but it is the ONLY thing that works on one of my daughters. It doesn't take much either.

i went to my pediatrician's office because my 2 week old had a diaper rash as well. the operative word here is HAD! she told me to mix aquaphor and maalox into a paste and use that as my ointment until the rash was gone. also, i needed to STOP using wipes and just use a warm soft washcloth instead until the rash was better. within a day it was better and then it was gone. now, to maintain, i use plain aquaphor as a barrier to protect her and use wipes sparingly or when i am out of the house. if i'm at home, it's washcloths all the time.

it's kind of hard to mix the two, but i just put in a spoonful of aquaphor and just a tiny bit of maalox and mix the two adding maalox as needed. at first it doesn't go together well, but the aquaphor absorbs the maalox with time.

good luck - it's an awesome remedy! wish i would have known this with my first born!

:) S.

Good thinking!! I was going to suggest Nyastatin cream, but a prescription, so can go to the 'foot' section of pharmacy and get a cream for fungal infections. Sounds like it was Thrush. My triplets were preemies and got it all the time. Usually in their mouth too. I learned fast to rinse their mouth after a nebulizer treatment! and antibiotics cause it quick too. sounds like problem solved! Yeah! take care, K.

Call her doctor because it could actually be a yeast infection and you'll need a tougher cream than that.
