Diaper Rash Due to New Pregnancy?

Hello Ladies,
I have asked your help and opinions before and you guys have always been great. I am newly pregnant and am still nursing my 2 year old daughter. About the time that I stated suspecting I was pregnant my daughter came down with a horrible diaper rash. She is potty trained and only wears a diaper over night so I was very surprised. Now we are starting to notice that when we skip nursing the rash looks better, a few hours after nursing the rash looks much worse. My sister told me that she found out she was pregnant when she took her daughter to the Ped for a very similar rash and they said it was due to hormones in the breast milk. She weaned and it got better. I had a pediatrician ( a relative) take a look at it, and she said she has never heard of a rash due to hormones in breast milk and she feels it must be environmental, but we haven't changed any detergents, soaps ext lately. Neither my daughter or I are really ready to wean, but the rash bothers her and we will do whatever it takes to get her better. Has anyone ever heard of this before?
Any input is great appreciated!

Hi M.,
Please don't listen to the post below, many women nurse into and through their pregnancies. There are no medical recommendations against doing this, provided that you are having a normal pregnancy. Nursing does not take nutrients away from the growing baby - the growing baby doesn't get your breast milk.
I don't really know about the hormones causing diaper rashes in breastfed babies/toddlers, but if that's the case, I'd try to find a way out of the diapers. I would also take her in to the doctor and check for thrush, which isn't related to pregnancy but both mom and nursling would need to be treated.

Sorry I can't help with the rash, but I wanted to chime in to make sure you know that there is NOTHING wrong with bf'ing while pregnant, nutrient-wise. The developing fetus will get all it needs whether you nurse your daughter or not.

Wow...lots of misinformation about breastfeeding while pregnant! I wish I had an answer for you about the rash, but I don't, but I did want to say way to go for maintaining that wonderful relationship with your daughter. My older daughter weaned herself when my milk supply dropped during my second pregnancy, and I feel like it really impacted our relationship (she was only 14 months old at the time and going through lots of developmental changes). My second daughter is 18 months old now and still nursing and I am so glad we're able to keep up the relationship. I hope you find resolution to the rash so that you and your daughter can wean when the time is right for both of you! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Hi M.,
Has she tried milk yet? Maybe you can see what happens when she drinks some milk and some breastmilk (you can pump your excess into a bottle). My midwife advised that if I were ever pregnant while breastfeeding the preceding child, I had to wean that child off because the vitamins that were going into the breastmilk should be going into the new embryo. I loved breastfeeding my children so I can empathize with the closeness you feel with your daughter. However, focus needs to be on growing a healthy new baby. Try weaning your daughter to milk and see if the diaper rash subsides. As mentioned, you can always pump out the excess while you do this experiment. Your poor little girl can't be comfortable anyway so trying this can't hurt. GOod luck!

Hi M.,
You really deserve credit for keeping up with nursing even during pregnancy. I nursed my son till 18 months so I know how difficult this can be. It's the healthiest thing you can do for your daughter. I would try an all natural product for her diaper rash called "Diaper Rash Cream" from Nature Only. It heals amazingly well and it's the only diaper rash cream that I have found to truely be completely natural. I still use it myselg for my kids. Good Luck!

Hormones in the breast milk is correct. Whatever you are eating now affects your milk too.

Just because your Ped never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

What about pumped milk from a bottle? Maybe less breast hormones? If it is hormonew, you must be having a boy! I weaned my daughter when I was 3 months pregnant. She was 2 then and it took a week to cut it out and she refused all milk for a month but ate yogurt + cheese so it wasn't so bad. A month later she started milk with flavors (strawberry quik) as a treat for breakfast.
I know it can be done (bf'ing while pregnant) but think of yourself and baby to come right now. You need strength ane baby will need all your nutrition so it will help you to wean.
I hope this helps!
