Hi everyone. I am a sahm to an 18 month old girl and pregnant with baby number 2. My 18 month old still nurses before bed each night. The past three or four nights she has woke up vomitting in the middle of the night. One night I put her to bed without nursing and she did not get sick that night. She has been eating and drinking normally during the day and not getting sick. So, my question is, could my breastmilk be making her sick to her stomach. I already tried la leche's website and didn't find anything. Has anyone had a problem like this or does someone know if breastmilk could be the cause of her vomitting? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Congrats on the new baby and on nursing for so long. However, I must offer some caution. While breastfeeding while pregnant is not harmful to your baby, it is very hard on your body. Your body is working overtime to create and develop this new life while the little one you already have is also depleating you of nutrients that your body needs right now. At 18 months, she no longer needs to nurse. She is getting plenty of nutrients from the food that she eats everyday and does not need the supplement of breast milk. At this point, she does it out of habit more then out of need. I would suggest this would be a good time to ween her. That doesn't mean that you can't hold her and snuggle her anymore. Just let her drink cows milk or whatever kind of milk you prefer while you do the snuggling before bed. If she is down to just nursing at bedtime, it shouldn't be that hard to go ahead and break the habit. In the long run, all three of you will be healthier.

Hi there. Honestly, the chances of your breastmilk making your 18 month old are slim to none, especially if you have been nursing her all of this time. It could be one of a few other things..maybe something you are eating/drinking is upsetting her tummy, or has she been eating something new before bed? I nursed my son for 11 months and when he was smaller, that happened to him a few times and to find out, there was no reason for it at all. After about 3-4 nights he stopped. So, 1st I would check to see if there is something that you are ingesting through out the day that may be upsetting her tummy. Oh, and back in the day, women thought that is wasn't good to breastfeed while pregnant...but I have to tell you....breastfeeding while pregnant is PERFECTLY normal and is just as healthy.
Good Luck!

Hi M., my name is N. J from Kansas City Missouri. I come from a large family. I remember when I was growing up, during my mother's child bearing years,(she was haveing a child almost every year) I remember hearing her say that once she found out that she was pregnaunt with the next child that she would stop breastfeeding because it was not good for her baby.

Tandem nursing is almost always fine, but I have read that your milk tastes different while you are pregnant. Maybe your daughter doesn't like it? Anyway, this could be a good time to wean her if you want. My boys are only 20 months apart I wasn't up to nursing them both, so I weaned my oldest while I was pregnant. Good luck.

I completely agree with Sherri.

It's very unlikely that your breastmilk is making her sick. Maybe a coincidence? Stomach bug? Has she eaten anything new? It is possible your breastmilk tastes different because of hormones. If you're convinced it's the breastmilk, I would try to talk to a lactation consultant. You can find one on the LLL website, your doctor can recommend one, or the hospital where you're delivering probably has one on site.

Also, breastfeeding while pregnant is perfectly safe. Your doctor might want you to stop if you're at risk for pre-term labor or miscarriage. This is an old wives tale, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Congrats on your pregnancy!
