My son typically has 1 poopy diaper per day. Yesterday he had 5 poopy diapers and 3 today. Not quite diarrhea but really mushy (sorry if thats gross) which started to cause a diaper rash yesterday. Now his bottom is all red and bumpy. I try to be as gentle as I can when I am cleaning him up but he wimpers in pain. I've been using Aveeno diaper rash ointment, which I heard was great, but I'm not impressed. Maybe I just need to give it time to work though. Do any of you have any suggestions on a diaper rash ointment that you were really impressed with???
My 8 month old grandson just had the same thing we tried everything than someone told us to buy a $2.00 tube of triple antibiotic cream from dollar general. Gave him a bath and covered his bottom lavishly with it. Healed in no time. Now we put on a light covering after his bath. Hope this helps.

Hey there, S.!
You know what I found worked really well is to stick them in a tub of warm water with corn starch in it. It has properties in it that is very healing. I had to use that for my babies oftentimes when they'd get those kind of rashes. I always had good luck with A&D Ointment too as far as putting it on the rash area (not the creamy but the clear kind).
I found that the only thing that worked on my youngest son was Desitin Original (not the new creamy formula). It was thicker and stayed on his bottom better to battle the diaper rash. He also rarely had rashes and this was the best thing that I could find for him. Good luck.

I have a nine month old and have tried many diaper rash ointments, but I stopped when I found Boudreaux's Butt Paste. You can find it at walmart, target, hy-vee. My child does not even cry when I put it on. Only a few aplications and typically the rash is gone. Good luck and I hope it works for you.

i really liked desitine and aquaphore(sp)
also try to let him air out as much as possible. wash hit bottom with water as much as you can during this time. some wipes can irritate it more or make it hurt if there are any fragrances in them
stay away from juices and fruits. i'm sure you already know that. and also to help with the runny poops try any white startchy foods like rice, crackers, etc. bananas. apple sauce. stay away from actual apples and other fruits and juices. stay away from greasy foods. and again you may already know all this :-))
it's so tough seeing our little ones in pain.. good luck.

The best way to go about it is to try differant kinds. I like Desatin and A & D ointment. Also letting him air out for a little while help too.Don't use wipes on him, if they have alcohol in them it will make it worse. My girls are teething, so they get loose stools too. It's awful, and I feel for you.

We have recently gone through the same thing with my son who was on laxatives so he was constantly going to the bathroom. We had great luck with Bordeux Butt Paste(not sure on the spelling of that) It's very thick but worked great. Or, it's a little messier and kind of a pain but if he actually has open skin areas a great natural way to heal this up within 2-3 days is to use a little corn starch and cod liver oil on top of that. Sounds gross, I know, but it does work. Good luck!

When my daughter was in diapers, I swore by Bag Balm. It was the ONLY thing that helped when she was teething or had rotovirus and terrible diaper rash. I believe it was originally formulated for cows udders, but can be purchased at any drug/discount -type store. It comes in a green tin and was a staple in our diaper bag for years!

I know what you are going through. I have three girls. My doctor told me to try this combination of cream and it works wonders. You you equal amounts of neosporin, lotramin(antifungual cream for athletes feet) and hydrocortisone 1% cream, mix together and put on bottom in the morning and at night. Use desitin in between and it works quickly and effectively. I know it sounds weird but I swear by it and had 3 girls with happy butts. Good luck. PS. equate or generic brands works the same as regular brands just saves you money.

Hi, you know not to long ago, the same thing happened to us with our youngest he'll be turning 1 on Sept.17th, I'm not sure if it was a virus or he was poping that darn front big tooth, he had never had any problems like this with any of his other teeth, but it sent me on the hunt for better baby butt products than i had just on hand, this worked great on his tender bottom, i would soak his bottom in his baby tub of the Aveeno skin relief bath treatment, stuff i used when our 10 year old had chicken pox,it worked then and it worked with the baby, you just put the oatmeal soak in his water and let it do it's magic then i also found the Desitin, over night relief was awsome! other products only have about 13% zinc oxide, Desitin has 40%!! My kids rarely have a rashed bottom so i did all i could to help my little guy, sure hope this helps yours, good luck.

That sounds like too much of an increase in poopy diapers! I would take him to a doctor to rule out that there isn't a problem first. The only thing that I could recommend as far as a "normal" diaper rash is to make sure he gets plenty of air down there. Always make sure you are airing it try before you "seal" the diaper. Use plain water and a wash cloth so you don't irritate the rash. Then use Desitin. Good luck!

I use Desitin. In fact I am currently using it on my 1 year old. He had the same issues. I think the diaper rash ointment just helps it from burning so much. I think the rash will take it's own time in healing. Like when you get a cold, the medicine you take is only to help your symptoms not make the cold go away. Give it time and try Desitin. It's been around for years for a reason!

the best treatment for diaper rash I've found is soap, water, and air. I would just bath my son everytime he did #2, pat dry with a soft towel, and let him lie naked on a thick blanket for a while. (Might be messy sometimes, but messy is better than a sore bum!) Before putting on a diaper I would put some A&D ointment on, but the cleaning and air were the most important. Diaper rash just comes from too much moisture you know! Good luck!

When our son had a bad rash, the doctor recommended using a wet paper towel - NO wipes, just water - because any chemicals of any sort can burn skin that's already irritated. He didn't fuss nearly as much with the wet paper towels. He also prescribed a diaper cream called Magic Diaper Cream or something like that (prescription). It worked great.

My son had diaper rash really bad for the past few months, it seemed like every time we turned around he had it, and it was just a little red, it was bad. It went form nothing to fire red and a scream fest with one diaper. The best thing that I found starts with a C its a big green and white bottle, but you can only get it at the Methodist pharmacy. It works wonders, you put it on and the next day the rash is gone. They gave it to me in the hospital and the will be the only diaper rash cream I will ever use again. Its grea. I am out right now other wise I would go get the container for you and let you know what it is. But again you can only get it at Methodist pharmacy so it should be pretty easy to find if you tell them what you are looking for.

You have a bunch of responses, but when my daugher was little and she had a rash my grandmother told me to only use water or soap and water(bath time), then let her air dry. Though you may have an accident here or there, it worked for me and I never used any ointments. My sister in law had the same system, for her 3 kids and she too had little problems. Once the rash is gone you can go back to wipes, but while he has a rash I wouldn't use anything but baby soap and water, and air drying. Good Luck!!

My sister gave me this recipe for successful diaper cream:
* Clean bottom well with wet rag
* let dry
* layer Monistat cream over rash (the over the counter in prefilled tubes)
* Layer Vaseline on top of that
* sprinkle cornstarch baby powder on top (make sure its not medicated! that could hurt)
* repeat as necessary with each diaper change until gone.
I've done this with my son and it usually clears the rash in a day. Our pediatrician recommended it, and it works!

Aroudn here, the Drs will prescribe for you "Dr. Grahm's BUtt Cream." The stuff is a wonder drug for diaper rash. Also, I always use the butt cream in conjunction with the Aveeno dipaer rash cream and cornstarch baby powder. Also, if you can let you son run around naked for some time, that willl help. Our daughter gets a "hum dinger" diaper rash every 3-4 months. We let her have, when we are home with her, 2-3 15 minute runs of naked time. It seems to help quite a bit.

My guess is that your son is probably teething. Both of my girls had horrible diaper rashes when they were teething. I prefer using A&D ointment, it creates an excellent barrier. Also our pediatrician gave us some samples of an ointment called Calmoseptine or something like that, it worked wonderfully. I has calamine in it to help soothe and it is a great barrier, especially at night. It looks like you can order it online as well. Here is a link http://www.anyotc.com/index.asp?PageAction=MFGSEARCH&.... Hope that helps.
I have also heard that Beudraux's Butt Paste is good too.

Yes...use liquid Mylanta or Malox with a cotton ball...dab it on his bottom. Don't use baby wipes....wash him off in the tub or squirt water over his bottom while the dirty diaper is under him. You can also use warm paper towels but best to not touch the area. Pure Corn Starch also works fairly well.
Good luck.

Hi S.,
I have always used desitin creamy, it seems to stay put through wet and poopy diapers. However, my 2 year old son seems to not be able to handle apples well. When he eats them, he will have at least one full day of every diaper being runny and it seems acidic. So he gets diaper rash so badly that it bleeds. I don't give him apples anymore once I realized that was the cause, but his doctor gave him a prescription "butt paste" which I believe is called Nystatin. You can only use it twice a day, but that is plenty, it is like a heaven sent gift! It clears him right up. Maybe check with your son's doc and see if you can try that. Good luck, I know it's terrible to have to see your child hurting so much and in such a sensitive area, then adding in the fact that you have to irritate it with every change of his diaper. Hope this helps.

Wow! People have given you so many ideas and different brands but I'll go ahead,, at the risk of overwhelming you, and give you my two cents as well:) Aquaphor ointment is completely amazing. It works as a water barrier so once you spread it on really nothing is coming in contact with his tender skin. My first son was always getting rashes in his diaper area (very sensitive skin) and this would take the red out amazingly quickly. Rarely would the rash last longer than a day and usually it would have calmed down within hours. Good luck - a sore bottom is a miserable thing!

For both my daughters, we've used Aquaphor and it's been great. Bag balm seemed to give my youngest daughter more redness. If it's a raised rash, it could be a yeast infection...so you may want to get that checked. A couple of my neighbors have told me that egg whites have worked wonders for them -- but I have not tried that.

Now that he has a diaper rash, a diaper rash ointment will not cure it. That only prevents it. Try using Maalox or Mylanta; dap it on with a cotton ball and then point the ointment on over it. Our ped. reccommended this when my son was born. I saw results by the next diaper change! If it is resistant, he may have a yeast infection. Try LotriminAF or any antifungal cream will work. It's very similar to jock itch/athlete's foot. Put that on every diaper change and teh rash will start to disappear.

I've used butt paste on both my daughters and it works great. Luckily we've never had any major diaper rash issues, but as soon as I start to notice some reddness I put it on and it's usually cleared up by the next diaper change. When my first DD was born the nurse told me that desitin wasn't good for diaper rashes because it doesn't let them "breathe" and because it can be so hard to get off it can further irritate the skin. I also found letting her run diaperless really helped too, when she did have a sore but I let her run around w/o a diaper in our backyard. :)

Any time my daughter got a rash I used A&D ointment. The kind with the yellowish brown logo not the kind with the blue in the logo. This always took care of it right away. Even when my daughter got Rotovirus which can cause horrible rashes.
It's also important that before you put any kind of ointment on that the surface is dry or you're just locking in the mositure by putting the ointment on. If the rash is really bad I also make my own wipes by cutting a paper towel into four sections and then getting them wet with warm water and ringing them out slightly. You can make a whole bunch ahead of time and store them in the wipes box or make some up when you need them.

It's for poison ivy/oak and stuff, and that cleared up the rash within the day. The rash was there for about a week prior and we tried just about everything.... butt paste, destin, aquaphor, you name we tried it. Good Luck!
