Hello, my name is T. and I just had my second little boy 2 months ago and he has had a diaper rash since he was about 3 weeks old. It is right by his butthole and looks like little red raw spots. I have been to the doctor twice for it and everything they seem to give me is not working..... I have tried nystatin ointment first because they thought it was a yeast infection and then they gave me something with hydrocortisone and a few other ingredients in it and that didn't work. I have been using something called triple paste for the last month or so and it seems to keep it under control but I can't ever get it to completely go away. I stopped using wipes the first week he had the rash and started using warm washcloths so the chemicals in the wiped didn't make it worse. I feel like I have tried everything. I let his butt air out constantly during the day and I have also tried baking soda baths and those don't seem to help either. Airing out his bottom seems to help but I can only do that so often. I have also tried Desitin and that doesn't work either. Is there anyone who has any suggestions. I am willing to try anything at this point to make it better. Please help!!

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advice about my son's diaper rash. I decided to stop drinking milk because that was the only thing that was constant in my diet. One day after I stopped drinking milk the rash was almost gone. I am so relieved to have his diaper rash gone and to know what was causing it. Thank you again for your help.

A&D oinment might work... its like a vaseline based ointment... when my son gets diaper rash i use that instead of desitin and it seems to work... you can also use A&D for any other rashes on the body. it works wonders for my son. :]

When all other ointments failed Calmoseptine did the job! It was recommended to me when my son had diarrhea and a nasty rash! It cleared up even the blisters right away! Try it out!! I usually get it at my local Kaiser pharmacy (you can buy it over the counter without a Kaiser card--they won't ask you) and it's about $6 (but totally worth it if they have those blisters!!) You might be able to get it other places (besides online) but I know that Kaiser has it... Good luck!

Hi Tabitha,
I had the same problem with my little boy at that age. The only thing I found to work is a diaper rash ointment called "Boudreaux's Butt Paste". I found it at Target and my local supermarket. It works wonders. I but it for all my friends who are expecting. The active ingredient Zinc Oxide is at a higher level than Desitin. It should clear up in a few days. Good luck.

This sounds very much like allergies. My son is allergic to wheat, gluten and eggs. Since I'm breastfeeding that means I have to avoid the foods. Before we discovered his allergies he had awful diaper rash and rash on his chubby thighs. I too tried all the creams on the market to no avail. Only when we discovered his allergies did it go away. If you are nursing try eliminating dairy from your diet for a week and see if it clears up. Or you can talk to your Dr about an elimination diet. My Dr gave me a handout of all the foods to avoid for two weeks and how to reintroduce back into my diet. If you are using formula talk to your Dr about switching to a non-dairy formula. Good luck.

Breastmilk. : ) Anytime you change his diaper, put some breastmilk on it. The enzymes and vitamins in the breastmilk can help anything from diaper rash to pink eye. Try some plain corn starch as well. And I would recommend taking out anything acidic from your diet, that way if it may be what's irritating his bottom, you can try it and see.

You can even mix some breastmilk with corn starch to make it into a paste. That worked wonders on my poor baby when he had horrible rashes that seemed to last forever.

My 9 month old has a similar problem. Her rash flares up like that. It rips my heart out to see like that. When it first happened I too tried everything...desitin, triple paste, etc. After a couple of weeks of nothing getting better I realized it was diet related, almost like it was her way of telling me she's allergic to certain things. My daughter can't process diary products & because I nurse I can't have dairy. Once I got that under control she was great until I started solids. Then it flared up again & I realized she's allergic to bananas and apples. I hope this helps.

A side note, if your son is allergic to dairy products the sooner you get it under control the better. It is easily fixed & if it winds up being the problem feel free to contact me if you need advice. ____@____.com.

My sisters little girl and boy had problems with rashes. They would also get the ulcerated skin that was close to bleeding. I think it is really great that your not using wipes. They really have too many chemicals in them to be good for such sensitive skin. I would not use anything with hydrocortazone in it because it actually thins the skin. A visit to the pharmacy to buy a cream that is kept behind the counter, but doesn't require a perscription that helped my neice is called Acid Mantle. It is expensive, around $45 for a large tub. But the tub might last you a year. You may have to have the pharm order it if they do not have it on hand, at that time you could ask for a smaller container just to try to see if they can order a less expensive container. Also, bathe baby in alveeno's colloital oatmeal for rashes. The best thing I can think of would be to put some kind of barrior between baby and the diaper. I would try unscented toilet paper. Your baby might be getting a rash from the diaper material, as well as his urine. My daughter is allergic to pampers but not huggies. I hope this helps. Once the rash is undercontrol a bit, Essential oil of chamomile in a spritzer with water for diaper changes might be soothing, as well. Just make sure it is 100% theraputic grade essential oil.

I would have said yeast at my first reading of what you wrote.

Have you tried Epson Salt baths? I would ask your doctor if he/she would think that this would give your baby some relief.

Your son is only 2 months old and he seems to have very sensitive skin. Is he breastfed or formula fed? It could be something in either milk sources, that might be irritating his skin, and when he poops it irritates his anus. Or, maybe allergy. My girl had very sensitive skin too... I bathed her with Cetaphil (I used no 'soaps' on her), and used A & D diaper cream, and antibacterial ointments as well (ie: Neosporin, Bacitracin). I've used the "Butt Paste" but it didn't help her and actually made it worse. I also used diaper powders...which kept the moisture down and kept her drier, and also just aired her out with no diaper. Or maybe it's a fungal skin infection growth? Has the doctor ruled out that possibility? Since it's always in the same area.... sometimes the skin gets ulcerated and weakened and then the skin area can't heal. Whatever it may be, maybe best to get a 2nd opinion from another pediatrician, since nothing seems to have helped so far. Good luck and take care.

Have you thought about testing him for allergies?

My son used to get horrible diaper rashes infrequently, and we discovered that he was allergic to apples. When I stopped eating them, and we stopped giving him anything with apples, they went away.

I had the same problem with my son. He had (still has) bad skin including diaper rash that he still gets to this day (he is 2 now I can't wait for him to be potty trained). Anyway the best thing that I found to do was after using the warm washclothes is use the blow dryer to dry the bottom completely. I would keep it on a low setting (heat as well as air) and dry for at least a minute or so. Then I would use the baby oil gel. I didn't like the creams because it seemed to be so hard to get them off the next time he pooped that I just used the baby oil so that I wouldn't have to wipe as hard to clean him off. I would just squeeze the oil out right onto his bottom and let it stay there so the skin was protected. Change often (I know, duh!!!)and once he gets a little older you may want to check for allergies. My son was tested and had none, but you never know. I also found a really great chiropractor that worked with babies and kids. I don't know how it worked but the rashes seemed to get better after I took him in to see her. We were living in Missouri at the time and I haven't found anyone out here yet so I can't recommend but you may want to give that a try as well. Let me know how everything works out.

Hi T.. My doctor suggested a mixture of hydrocortisone cream and lotrimin cream (the one you use for jock itch). It actually works! I just mix it together and rub it on my daughter and it goes away by the next day. Hope that helps! Good luck. I know it can be frustrating.

Hello,

My son will be 2yrs next Monday, and I am proud to say that he has never had a diaper rash! At my son's 3 days appt. I asked the doctor which diaper cream I should use, his answer..."Vaseline." Yep, just plain old vaseline, I use the Target brand, it cost about $1.19 or so. He says that its the most natural.

I use it at every diaper change. Although, this morning we have started the whole potty training bit.

I would start with Vaseline right away and give it at least a week.

Question, does the spot bother your baby? If not, and even the vaseline doesn't work just chalk it up to a birth mark! Don't stress over it, there are many other things to stress about.

Please let me know what the turn out is.

You can try Beaudreaux's Butt Paste, it's pretty good. My son has constantly had rashes, too. If we don't keep the yeast infection meds on him fairly regularly, it all flares back up. He has had rashes so bad they bleed and peel the skin. Vaseline works pretty good, too. What you're describing sounds like my son!!

Hi T. - I suggest you use Arbonne's ABC Diaper Rash Cream. I had three boys with lots of daiper rashes and it works better than all of the others due to it's soothing botanical ingredients. Unlike most of the other ointments you've purchased, Arbonne has a 45-day money back guarantee. You can purchase at www.4betterhealth.myarbonne.com and you should get within 3-5 days. Good luck!!

T., this sounds odd, but try Crisco, the frying cream. It really works. One of my friends had a baby 2 weeks ago and at her 1 week check, she had a really bad diaper rash. Her doctor told her that crisco was one of the best things to use. Good Luck!

Hi T.,
When my children were younger and had awful rashes my Grandmother suggested whipped egg whites. Sounds weird, but when nothing else worked, this did.
Simply separate the white from the yolk. Whip the egg white with a fork or whisk till it's very foamy. Put it on the rash area when you change the baby.
Store it in the refrigerator. You will have to re-whip it before using it each time at every diaper change.
I hope this works for your son as well as it did for my sons and daughter.
Regards,
L.

Hi! A friend of mine recommended Bacitracin and AD together when my daughter was younger. It works wonders! Her daughter used to get bad diaper rashes and her doctor recommended it to her. You can pick it up at your local Walmart or drug store. It comes in box in a little tube. It is with the ointments. I would just slap some Bacitracin on her booty and then a little AD on top. It worked everytime. I also let her air out for a little bit between changes! Good luck!

PS. If you are breastfeeding I would stay away from alot of the acid fruits and ect. Just watch what you are eating while he has the rash.

Beleive it or not the absolute best diaper rash that I have ever used and still use to this day on my 5 year old is called Dr. Sheffield's it contains A&D and zinc oxide you can purchase it at the 99 cents only store. There is also another brand with the same ingredients called Balmex. I swear by these products. My daughter had the same type of rashs and I took her to the doctor too. But for your sake try one of these products. I have even used them on myself for itching down there.

Good luck.

Hi T.. I'm M. & I use Arbonne. They have the best diaper rash cream! It takes the red away almost instantly. They have an entire line of baby items. You might want to try using the baby wash also. I have a before & after picture of this poor little baby with a rash on his face. Like you used all kinds of medicines & nothing worked. 2 days after using Arbonne the rash is practically gone. I can send you it. Call or email if you'd like to try it. ###-###-#### ____@____.com

Hi T. :)

My 3 yr old had a bad rash too when she was little.. It was like sores on her bottom as if her poop was eating at her skin...poor babies.. My girls pediatrician recommended "bacitracin" It's a pure antibiotic ointment. You can find at pretty much any pharmacy or target type store. It'll be next to the neosporin cream, etc... It worked really well. I think the rash was gone in a few days. Good luck!

Luckily, my little girl has only had one serious diaper rash. None of the creams/pastes/powders worked. We finally started putting Neosporin on her and that cleared it up rather quickly. The goopiness of it is like Vaseline (makes a barrier) and the antibiotics healed the raw skin (and killed the new poop bacteria). You might give it a go if you haven't already. Good luck

Try using California Baby diaper cream. It is the only cream I have used on my baby, and she has never had a diaper rash. It's kinda expensive, but you don't need to use a lot of it. Its much smoother than Creamy Desitin. You can buy it at Wild Oats or other whole food stores.
Best of luck for your little guy!

Ask your doctor about a topical cream called Calmoseptine. It can be used on adults and children and has a higher lever of zinc oxide in it than most other diaper rash creams. We used it on our son and saw immediate results and his rash seemed very similar to your son's. We purchased it through Kaiser; you might want to check on line to see where else it is sold (in case you're not a Kaiser member) or go to the website at calmoseptineointment.com. We tried all the ointments you mentioned but none of them worked as well as the Calmoseptine. I hope this helps. Good luck to you and your son; I hope he feels better soon!

T.,

My daughter had a rash just like that and it she had it for weeks and I tried everything. It is true what all the mommies are saying that your son could be allergic to dairy but you still have to take care of the rash whether it's something to do with allergies or not.

My daughter wasn't allergic to anything so my mom told me that I had a rash like that when I was young and she found a powder called CALDESENE and she used it on me and it went away. So I went and bought it and used it on my daughter and it started drying up the next day.

You can buy it at any drug store and it's in a pink bottle sometimes blue. Again it's called CALDESENE and it's a cornstarch powder with zinc oxide. Now I use it with my newborn son. Instead of oinment I use the powder everytime I change him and he hasn't had a rash since he was born.

So try it and let me know if it worked for you.
