I used to teach pre-school in college. Use Malox for really bad diaper rash. It really works. Good Luck
My baby just got a diaper rash, it's really red and looks bad, I change him often so I don't know how it happened and diaper rash cream doesn't help, any suggestions?
Thanks everyone, The rash is looking better, I've tried the simple things first, I let him sit in some warm water and then let him without a diaper for a while and put some vaseline and it's going away,I got the suggestions written down in case it happens again

Try triple paste brand diaper cream. Over the counter at some stores, behind the counter at others. Not prescription, not cheap, but it works! Good luck!
You can go to Wal*Mart & buy 'Bag Balm' ~ it comes in a small square tin & works wonders from diaper rash to dry skin to cuts!
I wouldn't be without it!!!
My daughter swears by Baby Bee Diaper Ointment from Burts Bees: http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SubCat...
She also realized that she had to be careful about the TYPE of Baby Wipe she used to (no alchohol, no scent).
My daughter just recently had a severe diaper rash that would NOT go away. After trying Aquaphor, Pinxalv (a product that I LOVE), Desitin and Oatmeal baths, I was at my wit's end. The Doctor saw her rash and thought it was weird and said to try Lotrimin with vaseline on top of it. After 3 days, we still had the rash and I called back. Another Doctor recommended mixing Mylanta (MOM) with Aquaphor and covering it with Vaseline. That still didn't get rid of it but all of the options were good ideas.
In the end, she had what I call a flesh-eating Diaper rash that would get worse with her acidic stools. So, I finally tried, on a recommendation of my friend, the Bourdeoux Butt paste and within hours, the rash that had existed for several days was gone. Ah HA.
The story ends with me taking my daughter to the Doctor again to rule our Food Allergies. IF your child has this regularly and has other symptoms of: congestion for no reason, dark circles under the eyes, acidic stools, pink cheeks, eczema, etc, you should have him checked out.
Hope this helps.

Hi Mariaelena,
I used Desitin on my boys and found it was the only cream that helped and I tried a lot of different things. Also, diaper rashes often occur from teething (the saliva changes to more acid) and/or increase in fruit or change in diet. It doesn't always have to do with how often you change the diaper or hygene. After gently cleansing with gentle baby wipes or soap and water, then pat dry and apply desitin generously to area. It is a good barrier and you will find it should look a lot different within 24 hours. Apply after each diaper change.
Good luck!
Darlene
Even though you probably use a brand name diaper, often the chemicals especially a form of bleach that whitens the disposable diapers irratates the childs skin. You can find disposable diapers at Wild oats that do not contain chlorine.

Hi,
I'm a mother of three and a grandmother of 5. I have used a couple of things that I'm sure you will think are really strange, but let me tell you - they really work.
You can got to a drug store, Wal-Mart and even Farm and Fleet to get these two items. One is "Udder cream" it is used on cows in the winter when their "tits" get cracked and it's milking time and than there is "Bag Balm" and it is used for the same reason but I have found both in the pharmacy area in Wal=Mart plus Farm and Fleet.
Please try either one, you will be surprised, I promise you.
Good luck,
C.
My daughter got a rash several months ago and the cream the doctor gave me did not work. My mother-in-law suggested that I sprinkle corn starch directly on it. I did it for a week and the rash was gone. It cleaned up a lot better than regular powder did. I hope it works for you! Good Luck!

Hello my name is L. i am a mother of 4 and a nursing student you will probably think i am crazy when i tell you what to use but i swear it works and my pediatrician does too. You buy Milk of Magnesia and combine it with A&D ointment or Vasoline and apply it like you would diaper rash cream and it works wonderful. Hope this helps
take some A & D mix it with mylanta or malox and apply every other diaper change and just A & D the other times- trust me it works wonders! diaper rash is acidic and the mylax is an a base. after the diaper change make sure the area is completly dry- let it air dry ten min if you can.
Hi Mariaelena,
I am a mom to two beautiful girls, ages 25 months and 4 months. We are just getting over a severe diaper rash with our 4 months old. It started off as a really red bottom and then it just got worse. It looked like she had been burned because her skin was ulcerated and weepy. It turned out to be a yeast infection. We used over the counter Antifunal cream. It has taken about a week for her bottom to heal. You might want to try using an AF cream. Best of Luck!

When my kids had diaper rash it always helped to wash it down with warm water instead of wipes. i would fill a squeeze bottle with warm water and do diaper changes over a towel. Also, for bathtime, put some baking soda in the tub and let the baby's bottom air dry for awhile before putting on a diaper. If it doesn't clear up in a few days it may be a yeast rash and need special cream from the doctor. Hope that helps!
You can always try different creams.
Also if you have a playpen, you can leave him diaperless in one for a little while with some towels. Make sure he's nice and dry before you put a new diaper on him. A+D ointment works for my little one, but if your boy's is really bad I suggest one of the creams, they tend to be more "heavy duty".
Good luck!
It might be a yeast infection, so I would recommend seeing the doctor, since the cream doesn't seem to be doing anything.
He might be teething; I've noticed my baby and my friends have said their babies get diaper rashes when baby teeths. I slap some Lansinoh Lanolin on his butt, and it clears right up!
Yes I do. If you go to Moore's home health they have a product in a white and pink tube that is an antifungal cream. It works WONDERS!!! What it sounds like is a yeast infection. If that's the case, this stuff will knock it out in a heartbeat!
Good Luck

Many years ago when I had no transportation and no ointment for diaper rash, I frantically called my doctor and she told me to scorch some flour in a skillet, let it cool and put it on my son's poor little red bottom. It worked wonderfully well!
You can try triple paste, it might help.
My daughter NEVER got diaper rash until a few months ago. My sisters (who have a combined total of 12 children) recommended Bourdeoux Butt Paste, and the rash went away within 2 hours!
Hi Mariaelena! I've found that if you use Bag Balm it works really good. You can buy it at Walmart in the pet dept. Its what they use on Cow Utters to keep them from chapping. My son used to get diaper rash all the time as a baby and the babysitter used that on his bottom and it works wonders. It provides a thick enough layer on his bottom to protect it from urine and feces. I hope this helps.
My "babies" are all grown but I remember using a very effective ointment that a local doctor in Bangor, Maine prescribed (Dr. Emory's Ointment). When we moved to Louisiana, I called that pharmacy and got the formula compounded at a locally there at a Medicine Shoppe. It had zinc and calamine lotion in it. It's important to clean the diaper area well and then apply this ointment that "soothes and protects" (and doesn't easily come off.)
I did some research and found these current products (with testimonials) that seem similar:
Calmoseptine ointment (you may have to ask the pharmacist, but it's not a prescription), triple paste and Butt Paste.
Good luck, most of these problems will clear up by kindergarten. (Don't laugh, this advice kept me going through the toilet-training phase.)
Both my children were allergic to the creams.
We fould the best was a medicated cream the doctor gave us.
OR, Rosebud Salve, you can find it at Sephora. This cleared it up almost instantly.
It is like a vaseline!
good luck
I agree with A&D ointment (NOT the white cream, the ointment).
I am the same way with my son. I always change his diaper and he still manages to get a rash. His grandma had bought this stuff called Wedela and its in a white tube. You buy it a the health food store like whole foods market. It is the best thing i've ever used. It works within an hour.
This will sound weird but I got the advice from my doctor. He told me to use anti fungal cream (lamisil,I bought the generic athletes foot cream from walmart) on my son who had the same problem. It worked so well I never used diaper rash cream again. That stuff was hard to wipe off anyhow this is not. Good Luck.
It could be a yeast infection. My son has had 3 of them. The skin will get really dry, maybe peely, you could get open sores. Diaper rash cream will worsen the problem. My soultion sounds whacky and granola, which I am not, but try it. It works wonders:
Take some white flour. Put it in a pan and brown it. Keep stirring it so it browns evenly. Let it cool off and store in a tupperware container. Sprinkle on privates just like you might baby powder.
Good old airing the butt out I believe always helps. I would always a few times a day let me dd lay on a waterproof pad on the floor and play with her toys with no diaper. Of course I washed that pad all the time and usually had to clean up urine, but to me it is worth it. Whenever I would change my dd I always would keep her diaper off for at least 5 minutes and sing and play with her. I dont know if that is what kept us from ever having a bad diaper rash or better yet not any at all!!
Good luck!
Hi it sounds like you have had a lot of great suggestions! I just wanted to share what worked for me. My daughter also did not do well with any white creams. It pains me now to think that I even pput them on her b/c they probably hurt her even more than the rash itself! We tried BagBalm. It is like a Vaseline. We found it at Walgreen's. It is in an old-fashioned looking dark green tin. It goes on really well, and it is not too greasy or goopy like vaseline. Try it, I swear it works and it does not hurt baby. Also, try a few times a day soaking you baby in a warm water tub with a non-perfumed soap. And then just let them sit under a few towels for a half hour or so just completely naked from waist-down. This is the best thing to do for a rash. Best of luck.

The first time my boys had a diaper rash I couldn't get it to go away but the first time I used the Aveeno rash cream it was gone totally the next day. That stuff works great and is always in my "new mom kits"
When the diaper creams don't work, I use potato starch. Dry their bottom and use a cotton ball with the starch. It helped in a few uses. Otherwise, I've found my kids cry and feel a burn when I use creamy desonex or balmex, but the Aveeno Diaper Cream is great and they don't seem to have any pain. Hope this helps!
Have you tried Triple Paste?
I have 23 month old triplets. My little girl has shown some allergies to some foods that didn't agree with her system and a certain antibiotic. The rash comes on suddenly. We give the area as much air as possible before re-diapering. I also had my doctor write a perscription for a stronger cream. The cream is "Nystatin Cream". I hope this helps.
Good Luck

I actually have better luck with baby powder than cream. It helps keep him dry. I just put it in my hand to wipe on him and keep it away from his face though.
We have had a tough time with Diaper rash. It could be a yeast infection, yes boys get them. For that you can try using an over the cocunter jock itch cream. If that dosent help try different brands of diapers. Your little guy may have develped a sensitivity to the ones you are using. Chlorine is the most common irritant in diapes. You can get chlorine free ones (7th generation @ traders Joes and Albertsons grocery stores or Natural Beginnings at Target)
Our youngest has very sensitive skin and some allergies. We ended up changing to cloth (yes cloth) once we went through all the brands and found no improvement. They aren't as bad as we thought they would be ( we use pocket diapes) and now I know that our little one is comfortable.
If desitin/vaseline doesn't help, then there is a chance it is a yeast rash. If it yeast rash looks like this: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/T081401.asp
raised, red, bumpy looking. If you use an antifungal cream (like you would for athlete's foot, etc) like Clotrimazole or Nystatin it should clear up in a few days. You can also put Vaseline over a layer of that to help keep it from rubbing off.
Everyone has told me to use A&D ointment. :)
Good Luck!
I found that bathing often and open air helped. It is a little harder with a boy because of the possibility of a fountain but I just kept him on a towel with a towel lightly draped over him. If that doesn' help it is always possible that he has a yeast infection. We ran into that too.
If you do not have the time to take the baby a bath and leave the baby without a diper for an hour you can put corn starch on the baby's bottom. I know it sounds a little funny but it will dry out the diper rash.It has always worked for me and my four children.
When my daughter would get a bad rash, the Dr. told me to try a baking soda with warm water rinse, then put on DRC cream, it is a diaper rash cream that use to be behind the RX counter. But if you ask for it they can show you where it is. My daughter is now 13, but she has red hair and very fair skin, so everything would give her a rash. I would always deluite her juice, until she was about 5. This baking soda and warm water before the rash cream always did the trick, it neutrolized the rash so the cream would work better. Also a friend of mine, her daughter also had a very bad rash, similar to a yeast infection, the DR. told her to use jock itch cream, seemed to clear it up with in a day. Good Luck, but remember to check with the babies doc.
Desitin Creamy. My doc told me to use it. She uses it on her own son. I used it twice and no more rash. Hope it helps. Also, when you do regular changes, try a little vaseline, when there isn't a rash. It will hold the moisture away from his skin and help prevent rashes. Good luck! Shannon G.
If you can, have him go commando a little bit. Also, wash with a wet washcloth instead of wipes or at least at night if it's not bath night (or just use no soap). I HIGHLY swear/recomend "Bordeaux's Butt Paste". Swear by it. :)
You can also try Lotrimin. Yes, it is a fungal cream but it can heal and treat severe diaper rash that often turns into a yeast infection (fungus). Use a pea-size of the Lotrimin and then cover the entire area with Desitin.
Triple paste helps any bad rash right away. It's awesome.
i agree with the poster that said this. You have to get it at the pharmacy, & it's a little more than a regular tube of butt creme, but it's medicated & works wonder!!
Some babies need more water than others. Strong urine (it is like ammonia) will cause diaper rash even when you change them often. Keep using the diaper rash cream and corn starch or baby powder with corn starch until the rash is gone. It helped my children.
A little about me;
I am the mother of 10 children, 4 girls and 6 boys.
Hi Mariaelena,
Great advice so far. I would also -
1) Make sure it's not the diapers - some have perfumes that might irriate your baby's bottom.
2) Think about what he's eaten that might have irritated his system.
3) Slather on the plain old Vasaline.
Good luck!
I've had a few of those rashes with my daughter. Everytime she cuts a tooth, she gets a horrible rash. Triple Paste works wonders. It's expensive, but it worth it.
Hope this helps!

I know this sounds bizarre, but it really works. In an iron skillet burn flour just til brown. Apply to babies bottom. I only needed to use it 2x, before my babies bottom was healed. My neighbor told me about this years ago when my 3rd son had a rash nothing would work on. Good luck.
Have you changed diapers? I know my son gets a rash when he is cutting a tooth and after he eats certain foods. I use the Gold bond medicated powder. it seems to help.
If a diaper rash persist for more than 7 days, and does not respond to over the counter rash cream/ointment, it may be a yeast rash. Yes, even baby boys can develop a yeast rash! Your pediatrician will have to prescribe an Rx anti-fungal cream. One i've had to use is called Nystatin...clears it up right away! Hope the poor little guy feels better soon!
Triple paste helps any bad rash right away. It's awesome.
Get Saratoga burn ointment. It is sold in the drugstores and is in the burn section. When my son had a really bad rash it was the only medicine that got rid of it. Even the prescription from the doctor wouldn't work.
triple paste diaper creme is the very best for the bad rashes! and if the rashes continue look into probiotics - ask your pediatrician about them....sorry so short - i'm holding my baby boy :).
My daughter used to get rashes so bad expecially when she was teething. It sounds weird but I used yeast infection cream and it worked great.
Aquaphore is the best I've found.
Don't use the wipes at every changing, or use a damp cloth instead (pat the area instead of wiping), continue to use the cream, until the rash clears up.
Mom of two
I would rule out foods or laundry soap as a cause. As for getting the rash under control or gone I would HIGHLY suggest what I used. Don't laugh or be offended. It is called Utter Cream, it is usually with the diaper rash products and is in a green square tin. It was the best thing I could have ever used for my girls. My oldest is VERY sensitive to citric acid and the first time (not knowing this) that I gave her OJ it literally bloodied and blistered her butt, I nearly had a stroke when I saw this. He Dr (at that time it was Dr Mike Dick, I believe) told me to use Utter Cream and the rash was completely gone in 48 hrs. I am dead serious. I still shake my head at that one.
Good Luck
you should let him air out a little & if it's been continues call your doctor for advice.
Hi Mariaelena,
First, do you "fan" your son after you've changed him? this helps big time.
And the diaper cream I sell with Jafra is the best. And I am not saying it just b/c I sell it. Its works, I have 2 girls and I tried everything when they were little and this was all that worked. I give this to every new mom friend of mine and they are so grateful.
We do have a 20 day return policy, but I know you will not be returning it.

Our family cure for diaper rash is generous amounts of A&D ointment sprinkled with pure corn starch. It has been working for a few generations now. Usually clears up in less than a day because it keeps the moisture away from the skin.
i have a nine month old.the same thing happened. i had to switch diapers. i thought it was teething. then i tought it was the plums too much acid in his diet. it turned out to be the diapers.the doctor didnt know either. he told me to put benadryl cream on his rash.(didnt work either)someone else told me to use mylanta cherry flavor.iknow its wierd but i hear it works.
