My youngest is growing up. He is 11 and it is time for him to wear deodarent. Thoughts about brands. It seems with young girls there were quite a few to choose from, but with him not sure. Any help appreciated. Thanks

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for responding. I checked out Axe when I had to go to the grocery store and agree that most scents are pretty strong. Definitely at this age stay away from antipersperant -- I remember with first one ped saying not good for their bodies. I plan on taking him this week and let him pick out something he likes and this way he can get used to wearing before school. Thank you Mommies

I have to agree, NO AXE! The stuff is completely noxious. Picking his own out is good. There are loads of sport scents in all the major brands and they are effective longer. Maybe it could be a guy's trip to the drugstore with dad offering guidance on gels v. solids v. sprays and all that. Plus, other questions may come up in such a handy environment for show and tell:)

My 10 year old has liked Axe but it didn't last as long as he liked. So he switched to Degree and seems to really like it.

Arm and Hammer brand. My daughter uses it (cause there's no aluminum in the "natural" one- but it's NOT GIRLY...lol). It uses baking soda (obviously) in the formula, and it REALLY seems to work quite well!

I don't have any boys... but I'd HAVE to say that Axe is geared towards older teens and adults. For GOODNESS sakes, the commercials say it all! LOL! ...who am I to know, though...

I had to giggle...mommy b. i don't have boys either. I know that axe is huge with the middle school boys though. I went to camp two years in a row and it was all over. (our middle school does a 3 day camp in 6th grade) The school actually sent a letter home to say chill it on the axe ;)

There is a scent by old spice (i think) called swagger... maybe that would be fun for him. My husband loves old spice...it must be good...

Have him go pick it out! With football my son needed it two years ago. Reminding him to wear it was torture, until he got to choose his own. Now I only occasionally have to say "deodorant" after the shower.

I recently bought Tom's for my 8 year old. It's just a deoderant and is all natural. It did the trick for him!

My son also likes axe, and I think it is horrible. I'm sure it could cause asthma the smell is so strong. I would suggest you google something like "top natural ingredient deodorants" and check ingredients. You wouldn't believe what is in some of these products we put on our skin! My sons are older and on their own. I sure wish I had started them on natural products that are safe.

There are 1000 chemicals banned in Europe because they are known to cause cancer. In USA, only 9 of these are banned. So, the other 991 are still allowed for use in our personal care products. Another 10,000 or so chemicals that companies use in shampoos, soaps, toilet bowl cleaners, rug cleaners, air fresheners have never really had proper testing. Nail polish has 3 known carcinogens in it! Crazy. High concentrations of aluminum are found in brains of Alzheimer's patients. Are we setting our young boys up for cancer and dementia by buying them the current selections of antiperspirant? I looked at the ingredients in AXE body spray when my 12-year-old pulled it off the shelf. It had BUTANE in it!! Isn't that the same"gasoline" chemical that's in lighter fluid?!! I said "NO" and my son pitched a fit. It seems all the boys on his basketball team were using it. Not long after, a note came home from the coaches to please not send our boys to school with AXE anymore. For a list of some chemicals to avoid, see "The Dirty Thirty" at www.teensturninggreen.com

For my 11 year old I just got a generic deodarent. I stayed away from the antipersperant since they are not the best for you and he does not stink bad enough yet to need one. I just let him pick the sent he wanted. I figured if he likes the smell he might be more apt to use it!!!

Good luck and God Bless!

My oldest son, who is now 15, had to start using deodorant at 7! I thought he was still too young, even though he really needed it, so I stuff with the most simple stuff I could find, which was Sure deodorant. I bought the plain, unscented kind, and it made a huge difference! It's easy to find, and it's inexpensive. As he got older and his body changed, we had to experiment with different antiperspirants/deodorants, but we always found the right one. Now that he's 15, he uses Axe. I WOULD NOT recommend that for an 11 year old. Oh, and changing soaps and/or bodywashes might help too.

Try the natural non- aluminum deoderant like Tom's of Maine, my son has been wearing the lavender scent since he was 9. It comes in odorless, too.You can pretty much buy it anywhere, these days, but Whole Foods has a nice selection of other natural anti-deoderants.

Please no AXE! It is so strong and so smelly.. I think the boys like the commercials, but in a car or classroom.. it is too much..

Whatever he picks, remind him to make sure he has rinsed off all of the soap and is totally dry.. He can even use a hair dryer to help dry himself off..

The deodorant needs to be used under the arm but also towards the outer edges of the arm, the sweat glands are towards the outside of the underarms..

Try one that is truly just a deodorant and not an antiperspirant/deodorant, Old Spice is the one I can think of off hand that makes them and many of the "natural" deodorants would be good too. Old Spice has some nice scents so I'd let him pick what he likes.
