Yes it is safe. My 3 yr old had to have conscious sedation (iv) as well as nitrous for whole mouth exstensive dental work. Best decision we made!

My daughter loved nitrus. She loved her dentist, she loved everyone in the world.
She sailed through her appointments like a champ.
She had never met a dentist she liked and wouldn't even open her mouth. Then came along a male dentist, of all things, he was honest, told her certain things might hurt but it would go away, she did fine.
She did better on the nitrus than the liquid sedatives they gave her at a previous dentist.
Having worked for a pediatric dental specialist I saw lots of kids get nitrus and there were no harmful effects.

Just my opinion.

yes its fine and totally a time saver! if you have never heard or seen a child get fillings with out it they scream and cry in terror the whole time. my daughter last year saw her first kid ever getting dental work done and he was screaming so loud everyone could hear it. she got scared but i explained to her that the dentist were helping his teeth get better. explain to your child what will happen and also if you will not be able to stay with them durring the proceedure.

YES IT IS SAFE! its just as safe for kids, as it is for adults, they just adjust how much they get, is really low. they really actually dont get very much because of their size. In fact, sometimes that is the only way a dental procedure can be performed on a child that age. Some dentists ALWAYS use N2O on kids just cuz its soooo much easier. P.S. being on the N2o doesnt mean they are completly knocked out or anything, it just makes them a little loopy, giggly and a lot less aware of whats going (kind of like having one too many drinks!) on around them so the dentist can get in and do what they need to do. actually, ive found that with the exception of a rare few who dont react well to it, almost everyone LOVES it! lol it may even make your child actually like the dentist! well, not like him, lets be honest, no one really likes him, but tolerable!lol so yes, for a 4 year old getting fillings, i would DEFINATELY reccomend getting nitrous. it will be 1000 times easier for the dentist, your kid, and YOU!!!

My daughter just turned 5 had had nitrous a couple months ago and did fine. She had to have her front tooth removed because she fell, chipped it, and got an infection.

Our pediatric dentist puts the kids to sleep at the out patient surgery center at the children's hospital. I really like this as an option due to the kids going to sleep, getting everything done all at once, not having any issues with going to the dentist, it's pain free, they wake up and want to go play or eat. I won't do it any other way.

My 4 yr old needed nitrous because he couldn't relax enough to have the filling done without it.
