Nitrous Oxide for Dental Work

My son had it and it was great. I get it for cleanings and exams and no I am not kidding. He did fine and now every time we go to the dentist he asks for the fishy mask with the yummy smelling stuff in it.

My kids haven't had it, but I LOVE it! Just had a blast of it at the dentist this morning. My dental visits are like relaxing spa appointments thanks to the gas! If one of my kids had to have a procedure, it would be fine.

My just turned 3 year old son had laughing gas last week to get a tooth pulled (walked face first into a table). He was perfectly fine! In fact he came out of the room with a smile. I asked if he remembered what the dentist did and he had no clue. Oh and by the way, he asked me the other night if he could go back to the dentist soon. So the laughing gas must have made it a good experience for him.

I get both nitrous and novacane for fillings. The nitrous relaxes me. It makes me feel calm and dreamy. Some dentists now offer flavored nitrous like cherry, tropical, or vanilla--soothing scents. Once the nitrous is turned off, the dreamy feeling is gone and back to normal.

I personally love it! I didn't realize they will give it to kids though. My daughter is strange... she has no problem with dental work, so we have never used it/needed it for her.

I would tell you to make his future appointments with Jason Lee. He's on 52nd and N. Portland, he also has an office in Midwest City. He is totally awesome and would do your son's work at either Baptist, Children's, or Midwest City hospitals. He uses only white material for fillings and his office is totally fun for the kids. We drive over 125 miles twice a year to see him. He's young and plays with the kids. My grandson was about 18-20 months old the first appointment and he sat the entire time he was getting his teeth cleaned and flossed and laughed.

Dr. Lee did our granddaughters cap at Children's under general anesthesia. She fell and broke a tooth off. She woke up ready to go eat and go shopping.

I love it...because you aren't unconscious...but you are sort of floaty/dreamy. You are aware that things are being done, but it takes away the terror/trauma. I just had oral surgery two weeks ago, and opted out of anasthesia and went with nitrous. It was great because I recovered faster and better, but I wasn't as anxious.

If I am getting a cavity filled I always get nitrous oxide. It is the highlight of the whole process! LOL! I completely agree with the other post-ers. You are completely relaxed and there are no side effects. I remember having it as a teen, but not as young as 2 1/2. Still it may help make it less traumatic for your child. I hated going to the dentist as a kid. It is completely safe. Good luck!

I personally can't stand nitrous oxide; it makes me nauseated, hot and dizzy. Not a fan of dental work, so they have to give me a sedative. My husband enjoys the laughing gas. So, last year when my daughter (at age 4) had the grape smelling nitrous oxide at her pediatric dentist for a minor filling, she was fine until the end when she told me she was spinning. We had her sit a bit longer than normal, and then when she did get in the hallway of the office, she got sick. It happens more than they tell you. They gave her some crackers and let her sit back down. She was okay after that, just tired from the whole experience. Just know that some people and children have that reaction. It could have just been that day, but since I feel that same way on it, I bet she will continue to as well. Just wanted you to know, since almost everyone on here seemed to say it’s fine with no side effects. I believe it is safe, but some people do experience unpleasant temporary side effects.
