Delivering at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital

I am pregnant with my second baby and my doctor suggested I might like delivering at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital instead of Oakwood in Dearborn. With my daughter, I delivered at Oakwood, and it was just okay. I didn't like the idea of having to request a private room and there not being a guarantee that I'd get one (even though I did end up in a private room). I live in Dearborn, and Oakwood is a 5-minute drive from my house, but I am seriously considering delivering at Wyandotte this time. Anyone deliver at Wyandotte in the past two years? Would you recommend it? It's really important to me to have a private room!

What can I do next?

I would say it depends on your insurance, sad but true. 5 years ago I had my daughter at Henry Ford Wyandotte, because everyone kept telling me what a great experience they had. Well, at that time, I had medicaid and I got very crappy service. I had to share a room the entrire time I was in labor (I was induced), got moved to a suite only about an hour or 2 before I had her, and then as soon as I got cleaned up I was moved back to a double and my epidural was done wrong so it didn't take and I had a hard time getting any pain meds after.

This time however (April 2007), I was treated very well, and I believe most of that had to do with the fact that I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and am doing MUCH better financially. This time they had many women giving birth at the same time as I, infact they were "overbooked", but I was able to stay in a suite the entire time I was in the hospital, my epidural took, and I had no problems with the staff. The nurses were wonderful and anything I asked for was there in a matter of minutes.

So, as I said previously, I believe it has to do with what type of insurane you have. After my most recent experience, I would recommend Henry Ford Wyandotte.

I had both my babies at Oakwood...and agree with the previous post that somve of the nurses were a bit on the cold side. Especially my day nurse, who had to help me get up and use the bathroom the first few times (I had c sections also). However...There is a NICU there, which wyandotte does not have. You never know what could happen. The lactation nurses were wonderful. I had a private room both times i requested, and my last delivery had a ton of babies delivered the same night. Sorry if that does not help!

Hi E.-I had my first baby at Wyandotte and my second at Oakwood so I think I can give you a good idea of the differences. Wyandotte was wonderful. The LDR rooms are spacious and comfortable. The nurses I had were great and always coming around to check on me-they really took great care of me and the baby. I even sent the staff a pastry basket after I was released. My second child was at Oakwood because the second time around my daughter was breech and I had to have a c-section. My doctor could not get a OR sceduled at Wyandotte and I ended up at Oakwood. I really was glad that this was my second baby-I atleast knew what to expect-even though it was a surgical delivery. My nurses were fine but seemed tired and older and somewhat cold-I had a great midnights nurse-but I was sleeping most of the time she was on duty. My discharge was horrible I actually left the hospital in tears because the discharge nurse was so rude. Anyway-I think you will have a great experience at Wyandotte-good luck and congratulations.

Hi, I've had both of my babies there (Feb 04 & Dec 06) and my third will be born there in Feb. I love wyandotte hospital, the nurses are ALL great & you don't have to request private rooms!
However, w/the last one, there were soooo many deliveries the night I had my last one, that the next day (which was my last day there) I had to share a room. I was not happy at all, but there was nothing they could do b/c of the volume of births. I'm really hoping that doesn't happen again! You can call and see if this has been happening a lot (they say this is a baby boom this year) and make your decision off that...

I delivered my son at HF Wyandotte, and had an awful experience. Aside from my Actual ob, My sons Ped, and the nurse who was with me during labor (who I didn't see again after), They were threatening, rude, an unresponsive to my requests. The on call doctor called me paranoid and crazy to my face when I came in telling him my water had broken and his test told him it didn't (turns out it had, and they sent me home..I ended up with an infection). The lactation Consultant was nice, but I only got to see her one time for 10 minutes. The other nurses tried to "help" me with breastfeeding, even after I repeatedly asked them not to touch my breasts, and I left the hospital with giant purple and yellow bruises on both breasts. They refused to take me off a particular medication when I refused it (which they're legally supposed to do if you refuse any treatment- stop it immediately) after my csection. The on call Doc refused to call my OB until my sons heart rate dropped to 60.. wouldn't even acknowledge he was going into distress until it hit 70. Thank god for the L&D nurse Colleen. She really fought the on call for me, getting him to look at the readouts of the heartrate drops, keeping me as calm as possible during all of it. She was the best thing in the wing, imho. Helped me after I got out of surgery to breast feed (gently, thank god), and showed me how to get my son latched on.

I've heard a lot of glowing reports from friends and family of the care they got at HFW, perhaps I ended up with an overworked batch of staff, not sure.. but I will never deliver there again.
