Jennersville Hospital or Chrisitana?

I just moved to the area and I'm seeking out an OB/hospital. We plan to get pregnant over the summer. I thought I had found a nice all female practice that delivers at Christiana, however, I am hearing horrible things about Christiana, especially the nurses and the restrictions on husbands spending the night, etc.

Has anyone delivered at Jennersville? How did you like the midwives and the MD? I'm a little nervous about having complications and having a midwife be on call as opposed to the MD; no offense to the midwives, I'm sure they are great...I am just unfamiliar with them and I have MD friends who are opposed to midwives...so I have a forced fear.

Any recommendations or stories would be much appreciated.

M

I delivered at Union Hospital twice and loved it. the nurses were very nice and helpful. My dr. is Women's Associates at Union. The hubbies can stay right in the room with no restrictions. All rooms are private. You deliver and stay in the same room. They are all relatively new rooms too.. within the last 5 years. They even have a whirlpool that you can sit in to ease contractions. I didn't do it but it's there. Anyways... Good luck.

Me again - I delivered 3 children(one stillborn due to anencephaly) at Christiana, but know of several friends who delivered at Jennersville. For me, I felt that I needed to have the more experienced staff of Christiana on hand for my deliveries. I did feel with some of the nurses at Christiana that I had to be right on top of them about not bottle feeding my baby, etc. But other nurses were excellent. I kept my babies in the rooms with me at all times. Christiana has a new private "family room" which I wished I had known about when I delivered my son last time.

My friends who delivered at Jennersville reported no problems to me. They liked the private rooms and the close proximity to home, their husbands didn't have to drive as far especially as they had other young children at home. If you want to talk to my friends, I am sure they would be happy to share their experiences with you about Jennersville!

Hi M.! I had my 2nd and 3rd child at the Jennersville Hosp. I would HIGHLY recommend them. They were so wonderful to deal with and so caring about me and the whole process from beginning to end! They are totally prepared for whatever comes there way. My husband's cousin was a nurse there and in her years there she never had one bad story to share. All good! Karen was my all time favorite!!! If you meet her you will love her also. My first baby wasn't delivered at Jennersville and it was a horrible & scary experience. I will not say where or what happened but I just want you to know I do have another hospital to compare the experience of child birth to. Hope this helps! Take Care! L.

Choose Jennersville!!! I can't say enough wonderful things about them. The ob/gyn on staff is Dr. George Henry. I swear the man practically LIVES there! They have recently hired another ob/gyn to the practice but I haven't met him or her yet. The midwives are also wonderful and capable, don't let your friends scare you. Also, take a tour of the maternity ward to get a feel of the place.
I've never been to Christiana but I've heard the horror stories about the wicked nurses and the strict hours too...NOT what you want or need when you are having a baby! Also, Christiana is a teaching hospital...so you may have students around when you really don't want them LOL
The ONLY problem I have with Jennersville is if you are planning to nurse, they dont' have a lactation consultant. They have a nurse who has taken some lactation classes but that is soo not the same thing. If you are planning to nurse, I would call the LLL ahead of time and have a contact you can call if you run into any problems with nursing.
Good luck!!!!

Hi. I delivered at Jennersville now 5 years ago. I had no issues. Dr. Henry is a wonderful OB, great bedside manner, funny. Karen Pesta, I believe her name is, is one of the midwives. She was incredible. I could not have asked for a better doctor. In all things and people there are good and bad. In my experience, it was great. Everyone gets a private room, the security of people entering the maternity wing was great. I don't know much about Christiana except there seems to be a hight C-section rate there. I've heard both good and bad things about it. Another thing to consider, and this was one of my concerns about delivering at Jennersville, there is not a NICU for newborns. I had had 2 previous children before delivering there and did not anticipate any problems, but you never know. I'm glad I did choose JRH because I don't think I would have made it anywhere else.
Hopefully that was somewhat helpful.

Hi M. my name is A. and I delivered at Christiana last October. I thought the staff was excellent. I chose the room- in option for my stay while I was there and my husband was allowed to stay with me and the baby in the room. With this option the baby does not go to the nursery he/she stays with you your entire stay except to be weighed. Hope this helps.

I was relatively new to the area when I had my second child last year. I started at Christiana and ended up going to Chester County Hospital. I am with Chester County Ob/Gyn - they have several women doctors. I really liked the hospital, and you have a much better chance of obtaining a private room than at Christiana. I had a C section and was by myself the entire stay. Good luck.

Hi M.,
Did you consider Chester County Hospital in West Chester? They have a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit. While you hope to have a wonderfully healthy baby, the knowledge that expert care is right there with you is comforting. If the baby did need a higher level of care, Jennersville would have to transport your baby to another facility and you would be facing an early discharge if possible or separation from your baby until you can be discharged. Also the time it takes to get your baby the help could waste precious moments. Also, you have many physician options at CCH. I have worked there in maternity for almost 17 yrs. and can tell you the quality of care is top notch. The only downside is CCH is not all private rooms, so there is no guarantee that you will not get a room mate, or that Dad can stay overnight. That said I still feel that CCH is the best choice overall for great care. Good luck in the future...and lastly tour the facilities and remember you can not please everyone so you might hear good and bad about any hospital. Go with your gut instinct armed with knowledge!
