Decorating Lockers - Boys

My son is starting 6th grade (junior high) next week, and the students are encouraged to come in on Friday to "set up their lockers."

My niece (same grade & school) is really excited about decorating her locker and has heard that many students are "going all out." I'm not too surprised if many of the girls are buying things. My son has minimal interest, which seems pretty normal to me.

Do boys really do much with their lockers? I told my son that we'll just go in and put his supplies in there. If he later decides that there is something he wants, he just needs to let me know.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As we suspected, many of the girls really got into the idea of "decorating" their lockers, while most of the boys simply placed their school supplies inside their locker and called it a day. I did take a look around, and the only thing I really think my son would appreciate is a shelf. I've been told that those shelves can collapse under the weight of text books, but he might be willing to try one and just seen.

Thank you for the reassurance! Really, I'm just glad that my son is happy and excited to start junior high.

None of my kids (one boy two girls) even USED their lockers. They just carried everything around with them all day in their backpacks. They said they didn't want to waste time between classes, going back to their locker, they'd rather see their friends. I was shocked, when I was in HS my locker was a little home away from home, and I decorated it with music and fashion photos and kept a mirror, hairspray (hey it was the 80s!) and other junk in there. Plus we left each other notes through the vents, all the time. Old school texting ;-)

My granddaughter decorated her locker beyond. Both my grandsons? Nope.

Mine did not (do anything) but put supplies in - as far as I know. If they did, they never mentioned it. Minimal interest, same as yours G..

ETA: Love the responses! hairspray (how I remember this...) and where things go to die.

Now that I think of it, my son forgot the combination to his lock and didn't bother to go ask at the office.

My 3 oldest kids (1 girl, two boys) barely used their lockers. They were where papers and sweatshirts went to die. My daughter got some accessories but didn't really use them. The two older boys didn't want anything - not a mirror, shelf, magnetic pencil basket, mini white board, nothing.

My youngest son is an organizing freak. His favorite thing is his Trapper Keeper, followed by the label maker, which he used to label everything last year. Even as much as office supplies excite him, the most he used in his locker was a small shelf and a pencil basket. Low key is normal...if he decides that it would be handy to have (whatever) you can always pick it up later.

My son had no interest in doing this kind of thing. All his friends were the same. He hardly used his locker as well. I think it's mostly a girl thing to want to decorate.

Congratulations on the big new year!!

I think this Friday "event" is, at least in part, sort of just a "polite" way of saying "please don't waste official school learning time doing silly locker stuff".

The "grownup" analogy would be - if you've ever moved to a new desk or a new office at a job...you might want some time to clorox wipe the surfaces and organize the desk drawers, but you might feel guilty about doing that in the middle of the work day.

That's all this is - time for anyone who needs it.

Middle school lockers were big enough to be used - but our son never decorated his.
I don't think anyone did.
In high school the lockers were too small to use - so he never used his.
He carried everything he needed in his backpack all day - and sometimes that thing weighed over 50 lbs!

In general - what you can expect from boys is - they'll leave a pair of gym socks in the locker until they can crawl away on their own.
