Daytime Naps

My 2 month old sleeps so good at night time, but during the day I cannot get him to sleep for more than an hour at a time. He is very calm and content all the time, so it is not a stressful situation. I do know that he is tired, but I cannot figure out how to extend his naping. I know that all babies are different, so I am not unrealistic about schedules, but I never had this problem with any of my other kids. Any suggestions, please send them!! Thanks

What can I do next?

I think it was more like 4 months when my three started taking longer naps. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I think you are doing better than most in the sleep department at this age!

I wouldn't worry about it. Up until very recently, my 12 month old didn't nap more than a half hour at a time - but she slept from 7pm-6am every night with just a couple wakings to nurse then right back to sleep. It was frustrating at first because I would get down that I couldn't get anything done around the house, so I understand where you're coming from. But if your baby is sleeping well at night, it just might be that she's getting the majority of her required snooze time then (which is good!).

If you have a baby this young who sleeps at night, you are incredibly blessed! I'd let him decide when he sleeps during the day.

Where did you get the idea that 2mo babies need to sleep for more than an hour?

It appears that you are both aware that there is a range of 'normal' and also convinced that this is not normal. It's an odd combination.

Lots of babies sleep in 40 minute bursts throughout a 24hour period, with no 'long' sleep session until they're over 4mo. Some babies sleep for 12 hours at a stretch for the first 3 months, and then not again until they're 13. I knew one little guy who slept 12 hours at night and had two 2.5h naps during the day. I knew another little guy who slept 2h at a time, day and night, you could set your watch by him until he was nearly a year old.

FYI-My son didn't take a nap lasting longer than 30-45 minutes TOPS until he was six months old. He is now almost 5 and completey normal. An hour at 2 months is great! I'm sure it will improve as the baby gets older. Good luck!

A.,

My oldest son did not nap consistently until about 6 mos old. He would go to bed at 9pm at night at about 3 mos old and then he would wake up at about 7a.m. He would then take a bottle and go back to sleep until 9 or 10a.m.! As a new parent I kept reading the baby books thinking that something I was doing must be wrong, especially since he rarely napped in the day at 3 mos old!!! At 6 mos old he only took an afternoon nap, never a morning one. But now since he is 6 I can look back and realize that this is just who he is. He is still full of energy all day, but once he hits the pillow he is out for the night. He stopped napping at 3 years old and was never crabby during the day after he stopped. My youngest son is a completely different sleeper and has been since he was a baby :)

Good Luck,

N.

I really wouldn't worry too much about it. My little guy had the same issue. I was lucky to get him down for 30-45 minutes.

He's 13 months now and now that we have him on a more consistent schedule, he sleeps anywhere from 1-3 hours during his one-afternoon nap time.

His big thing is not wanting to miss anything that's going on - even if it is just the adults talking. He wants to be in the middle of it. It's been months since he's actually slept in his stroller because there's so much to see and explore. He'll sleep in the car on the way home, but if we are out and about in the park or wherever - then he's up.

The books I read said not to worry too much about their sleeping habits until they were closer to 4-6 months. Hope that helps.
