Daycare Swaddles My 6 Month Old Baby to Sleep

Is it ok for babies to be swaddled when they are 6 months old? My daycare tells me it's ok and they swaddle my son for naps because he just won't sleep during the day otherwise. He's ok at night, sleeping 8-9 hrs without waking, but during the day it's hard for him to nap. But I'm worried that he's too old to be swaddled and don't want to do anything to stunt his growth.

What can I do next?

Swaddling babies while asleep doesn't stunt growth.

Babies need the security. He will "undo" himself from the swaddle when he is ready. You can find a few websites that will give you an estimated time table for development if you worried about his growth.

Here is one about swaddling: http://www.babycenter.com/408_when-should-i-stop-swaddlin...

Don't worry about it too much though. It seems like your son likes the security of it since it helps him sleep.

Don't know about other aspects of it but it won't stunt his growth, so don't worry about that.

Hi Y.,

There is no way that swaddling could stunt a babies growth. It's true that many babies no longer find the feeling of being wrapped up comforting by this age, but there is no reason not to do this for your son if he still wants/likes it.

My son (now 2 1/2) loved being swaddled, to the point that starting around 2 months, he would cross his arms over his chest when he was tired! He continued being swaddled to sleep at night until he was over a year old. Now, he is physically and intellectually very advanced as well as tall and handsom (if i do say so myself). Just keep your baby happy and secure, and he will do fine.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think it is going to stunt his growth maybe spoil him for naptime.

My daughter is 14 months old and I still wrap her up to get her to calm down for sleep. She is able to get out on her own very easily, but I think she finds it claming and soothing. I don't think it will hurt him as long as it's not so tight he can't get out if he wants to.

Hi Y.,

Swaddling will not stunt your baby's growth. We swaddled until our daughter didn't want to any longer, around 7 or 8 months. She is tall for her age. Your son will be fine. Anything to help them sleep at daycare is good.

Kids are never really too old to swaddle, and 6 months is certainly NOT too old. Most kids "kick" the swaddling habit because they themselves dislike the confinement - your baby will let your daycare provider know who he is ready to give up the swaddling by taking himself out of the "swaddle" by wiggling free. If it helps him nap comfortably during the day, there is nothing wrong with it, and I don't know from whom or where you heard that swaddling stunts a childs growth? Absolutely ridiculous, I've never heard such a thing in my life.
Leave the kiddo swaddled for as long as he wants it - heck, even older infants/toddlers/preschoolers like to be tucked in tight for the comfort of it.
