Daughter's Freak Accident

I know this is going to sound like a funny storry but I am concerned about any permenant scarring my daughter may have now. My 3 year old had been bothering my 7 year old as she was gettign ready for her bath. So when the 7 year old thought that that the 3 yera old had finally waled away from the bathroom door she slammed the door shut. Little did she know but my 3 year old was standing there looking through the crak of the door. My 3 year old ended up getting her nose caught in the door. The pore in the ball of her nose started to bleed and when it stopped bleeding all these oily fluids started to come out. I brought her to the emergency room and they said because the bone has not formed yet she could not have broken her nose. They also said we had to wait for the swelling to go down to determine if there had been cartilige (not sure of spelling) damage.
Now that the swelling is starting to go down there is a line with a scab going down the middle of the nose. It looks pretty obvious that there is going tobe a scar but I do not know if there is anything other than neosporin that anyone has used to remedy a scar like this. Also has anyone else had a child that had this type of injury. I am beginning to think my daughter is the queen of freak accidents.

So What Happened?

Well the scab finally fell off. There does not seem to be a very noticable scar but we have to wait another week because she is still a little swollen. She has an appointment in a couple weeks for the docs to check and make sure there has been no permanent damage to the nasal passages. She has some pretty nasty bruising still but that is to be expected. considering it has only been a week she is doing very well and things seem to be healing quickly!! I will keep you all posted! Thanks for all of the great advice!!!!!

There is also vitamin E ointment or gel that you can get from GNC. My son had a really deep scar from forceps at birth and the vitamin E got rid of the scar in 6 months to a year (it was a really bad scar).

Once you see the docs and make sure there are no issues inside her nose, try Mederma for kids on the scar line. You put it on 3X each day, for like 6 weeks, but it does work. My son split his eyebrow open and had stitches, and I put this stuff on it, and there's no scar visible at all.

Cocoa butter works pretty well, and also vitamin E. I actually have this stuff its called Palmers Scar Serum. It has all of that in it as well as some more ingredients like sharks liver oil.. Sounds weird and a little bit hippish!! but I use it for my stretch marks and it works pretty well, I mean you can still see them, but not nearly as well or as bright as when I first had the baby. It costs I think 7 bucks at Walmart... I think that there is also some other scar stuff on TV for kids, mederma or something, also they have advertisements now for that ANNOYING commercial for the head on stuff, well that same annoying company makes this product called Prefer-on and you can get that at like walgreens... And as funny as it is, My friend had bought that head on stuff and it really worked!! so I would give the other product a try myself... but good luck, and I hope that your baby heals quick and painlessly!! Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your little girl's accident.

Pure Cocoa Butter is excellent for scarring. Once the scab falls off, apply it a couple of times per day and it should go away completely.

Good luck!

You can buy the Vitamin E capsules, break them open and rub that on the wound twice a day. It helped minimize a large scar I received when younger.

Goodmorning C.,
Sorry to hear your little one got hurt, but I'm sure it won't be the last time LOL. I remember a time when my oldest was about three as well maybe a bit younger, banged her head so hard off the crease of a door frame....I thought her head was going to split right open. It didn't and she was fine, but like you I was worried about scarring, especially on her face. My doctor told me really not to worry too much about it other than the neosporin to keep it clean. He said this because they are so young still that their skin is still really plyable and will grow tighter as they get older. She is 7 now and she has no scar from the accident. If you are still really concerned though they do have this stuff called Mederma for kids. I have never used it myself, however I have heard that it works really well in preventing scars in children. Either way I hope it all works out for you, but try not to worry too much she is still growing and has a chance of not having any scar at all after awhile. It won't be over night, but it'll happen. Good luck hon.

I have used the following on scars that I have had myself & they have worked. Cocoa Butter, preferably without a lot of other ingredients in it, the pure cream. I have used it on scars from breast surgery, at least twice a day & you would never know I had any surgery. Also, break open a vitamin E capsule and rub it on the scar twice a day, sleeping with it on the scar overnight. It is sticky, but really helps. It also works well on any cuts. Good Luck!

C.,
I do know that a cream with OXYGEN in it is very good for healing. All things need oxygen to heal and oxygen is the earth's nature disinfectant. Many burn victims use it to heal burns. One that i have used is called Karin Herzog Oxygen Body. They have different percentages 1%, 2% and 3%. I'd probably use the lowest percent on a child's face. The product line is german but has a corporate headquarters in california.
good luck.

One of my daughters is also quite accident prone. She has suffered 2 facial injuries (minor- but still scary!) that probably would have resulted in scars.
Both times I applied Vitamin E oil 3-4 times a day.
I swear it made a HUGE difference in the end result. One injury never did leave a scar- and the one on the side of her nose is barely noticeable. Of course I can see it when I look- but I don't believe anyone else would even notice it.
I bought a bottle of the oil at GNC- but I think you can buy the capsules a bit cheaper and just prick a hole in the capsule to apply it.
Good luck,
S.

I'd take her to a plastic surgeon for a consultation. You probably won't be covered by insurance so it'll be between $75 and $150 but at least you'll know a professional looked at it.

If you decide to see someone, I suggest Fox & Schingo in Schenectady. Dr. Schingo stitched my daughter's face when she was 14 months old and I trust him. (No scar and it was a huge gash.)

I think that I would have her rechecked by a specialist now that the swelling has gone down. See your family Dr for a referral. There are a couple of issues going on here..........the obvious...possible scarring, & that could be serious for future teen years since she is a female & it is on her face, and the fact that it is her nose..........there could be an airway obstruction as the cartilage heals. Hope this helps.

First off, neosporin has been found to cause infection by trapping bacteria in the wound and it does no good for scarring (comes directly from my daughter's plastic surgeon). He says that there is nothing really that will help a scar. I asked about maderma and he said don't waste your money. M My suggestion is once it is healed to try vitamin e, and some abrsion therapy (like apricot scrub) to keep dead skin from building up. My daughter has a scar on her cheek from a dog bite (I used neosporin but we ended up in the hospital for four days due to a massive infection.) She is having plastic suregery to remove/reduce the scar on her face, because (this is the bad part) she is sensitive about it. She tries to wear her hair over her beautiful face and she is much more shy than she used to be. At three, I don't know if the same thing will happen (my daughter was 5 when she got bit), but I want to be honest and let yoiu know what might happen.
As far as freak accidents, we all have them. We can't be everywhere at one time, and things happen, and we feel guilty because of it, trust me I know. And when we have to take them to the er we feel like horrible parents because an accident happened. The nurses and doctors all tell me that its okay, accidents happen, but I know how you feel.
Good luck with everything.
