So my daughter who is about to be 4 years old has been potty trained for more than a year, but she still goes through phases of "accidents." Mostly bc I think she is too distracted or just doesn't want to stop what she is doing. Today she peed in her pants and just started screaming that it was stinging...all over her legs...ans this has happened on numerous occassions. Everything is fine when we get her rinsed off, but I am just wondering what causes this?? It isn't the actually peeing (like burning her female parts), but the pee on her leg.....

What can I do next?

Can't tell you what it is, but personally I WOULDN'T do anything about it. It would seem to me like that would be a great help in convincing her to not wait, and go as soon as she needs to.

I'd also add that she's probably not getting enough water. If the urine is diluted enough there won't be so much ammonia in the urine. I don't know if it will completely take this away for her but it would definitely help. Urine is supposed to be clear and not have a strong odor. I'm working with my dd to make sure we keep her water intake up, I'd slacked off because she wasn't eating enough but lately her urine has had a really strong odor and I know we need to put more water back into her system. Especially since Kidney problems run in the family, I've had stones a few times in the past so work really hard to keep my water up so that I don't ever have to do that again and want to teach my daughter about staying hydrated so that she can be as healthy as possible.

Your daughter might not be wiping herself good enough when she does use the bathroom. I remember when I was little...I would get in a hurry and sometimes wouldn't wipe at all. I know that is gross to me now but I was a kid. My female parts would burn and it hurts extremely bad. I still remember the pain. Also make sure she is wiping front to back.

Hi A.,
The pain on the leg is most likely due to the ammonia in the urine. A good wash with a non-irritating baby wash & then apply a good skin protectant (good oil or lotion, I recommend Arbonne ABC Herbal oil & lotion, made for extremely sensitive skin). Especially if she has eczema, rash, etc. The urine will make those areas very painful.

Poor little gal, hope this helps you. Take care, G.

I'd also increase her water-not juice or koolaid, just plain water-intake, like the rest of the mommies said. Check to see if her pants are rubbing her thighs-I know in the winter I tend to have chapped inner thighs from the cold & my pants rubbing against my legs. Make sure you're putting lotion on her legs too-I like the generic Aveeno. My doc suggested Aveeno (Walveeno, we call ours lol)for my son's excema & it works well enough for us to handle winters in Colorado.

It sounds like she needs to drink more water. At that age, you should only barely be able to call it yellow in the toilet. If it's too dark, she needs to drink more water.
