My daughter has had a nasty sinus infection for 5 1/2 months now. I believe we now have it under control. I was reading that dairy could be 1 known cause of it. I would like to try a diet w/out dairy. In the past I have seen a website posted on Mamasource and I believe it was ways to subsitute dairy products. I can not seem to find that website again. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

I don't know what website you are talking about but you could do a google search. We are dairy and soy free. I give my youngest hemp milk because soy isn't really good for you as people claim. We also do rice milk I get ours from trader joes they have the best prices. There are lots of dairy free desserts out there too plus you can substitute in lots of mixes with either water or milk substitute. You can go to both trader joes and whole foods websites and get a list of everything they have that doesn't contain dairy.

Keep in mind that gastric reflux can also be a cause of chronic sinus problems. All you need to do is reflux a couple times a week, and it will cause havoc with your throat and nose. I have a special needs daughter who for years had chronic sinus infections. She was diagnosed with reflux as a baby, but doctors had felt she could be taken off the meds. It got so bad she started have pneumonias. Her ENT (Dr. Mark Volk with Children's Hospital Boston) decided to treat her for reflux again, and the infections stopped. Just food for thought. Maybe you should see a specialist.

I am a health counselor and in my experience, there are five main foods that cause sensitivities. From reading your post it seems like you have a pretty good feeling it is dairy. Before eliminating dairy altogether you may want to try a rotation diet, beginning with dairy to be sure dairy is the culprit. To do a rotation diet with your daughter you will need to eliminate the biggest allergens-wheat, dairy, soy, corn and citrus. You take each one out one at a time for 7 days. After the seven days introduce the food back in. If the reintroduction of the food causes any new symptom or congestion you have your answer. If not, remove the next one and follow the same process. You may find several of the foods cause a reaction, which would mean she has an allergy/sensitivity to more than one. This is the best way to determine a food allergy and eliminates the guess factor. Often we try to determine food allergies by blood tests and skin testing. This process only considers one type of allergic reaction. The rotation diet works and there is never a false +/-.
I have a list of non-dairy foods that contain calcium that I could share with you. If you are interested just send me your email.
Good Luck,
J.

Hi S.,
Not sure about the website, but my son has been dairy free for years! He's 7 1/2 and I really don't think he's missing out on much, besides sinus and infections (never had one). There's lots of subsitutions like oat, soy and rice milk. We avoid the soy unless we know it's been processes properly. There's a new brand of ice cream made with coconut milk that we all love!
I think it's worth if for you guys, good luck!
E. K. :-)

As a lacto-ovo for 16 years I finally dumped dairy summer '09. I feel better and am eating much healthier.
