Has any one had a doctor tell them they are carriing the cystic fibrosis gene?My doctor tested me for this gene and let me know that I carry it.I guess one of my 2 parents was a carrier of it and passed one bad one to me.The doctor let me know that if the father of my children also carries it then I might have a child with the disease. My question is has any other mom been tested and found out their partner was a carrier as well?If so did your children have the disease and how many children did you have with this problem.I am hopefully worrying myself for nothing but I just am triing to figure out the likely hood of if their father has it.My first 2 children were healthy which made me ask why didn't I know about this before and wouldn't one of them have it.My doctor let me know that most doctors don't even test for this gene in pregnant women.I really wish they would so I would had known sooner.Even if their father doesn't carry it my children probably will because I do and I am thankful to know I can let them know to be tested before having children. So if anyone can let me know more about this I would really appriciate it.I hope I am worring about nothing:)Thank you for reading and responding:)

Hi C.! My cousin has cystic fibrosis and when i was pregnant i decided not to get the test and everything was fine. the statistics as far as i know are that both parents have to carry the gene then there is only a 25% chance that your child will get it. My cousins parents have another child and he is fine. but do some research, it might make you feel better. For me the chances werent high enough to do the test and stress about it the whole pregnancy. Whats meant to be will be. Good luck!

I'm in a somewhat similar situation, I'm a carrier for Sickle Cell Anemia. If your significant other is also a carrier for CF like you are, there is a 1 in 4 chance your kids will have it. As far as your children carrying the gene, some of your kids might get it or might not. In the state of MO it is now mandatoty all babies are tested for about 20 some different gene disorders, and when those results come in, the state will notify you if there is anything wrong, or if your child is a carrier or not. Plus you can always ask your kids DR to run that test on them. I found out through this newborn test my youngest son was a carrier for SC and then I got tested, and that's how I found out I was. You just have to make sure your partner, as well as your kids (if they are a carrier) partner are tested for this. Hope that helps good luck!

Sorry about taking so long to respond, I just got back into town and I'm catching up on my email.
I am a carrier for CF. It runs in my family big time. When I got pregnant my husband was tested and thankgully he was not a carrier. I'm not a Dr so don't quote me to 100% accuracy but I'm pretty sure that your child has a 50% chance of being a carrier. If you or your child are a carrier it does not affect you in anyway, you are just a carrier. Your problems would start only if your spouse is a carrier too. Chances are he is probably not a carrier but there are so many people who are carriers and don't know it. It can go back for many generations and no one knows they have it until they have a child with CF. If both you and your partner are carriers for CF then you have a 25% chance of having a child with CF. My grandparents were both carriers. They had a total of 6 children and 2 had cystic fibrosis. While one child passed away after only a couple of months due to other complications the other child lived into his early teens and that was back in the 1950's. Now days life expectancy is much longer and hopefully a cure will be found.
Do some research online and get all the info from your Dr that you can. Hope that helps some and if you have any other questions just email me!

I wouldn't worry about it. Although numbers and likelihood play a role the fact of the matter is, it is still up to God and thinking about it or having your husband tested won't change anything. The thing with genetics is that each time you have a child it is a new roll of the dice. Just because you have had two healthy children doesn't effect the chance of your unborn child having the disease at all. For example, if your child has a 1 in 4 chance of having the disease that doesn't mean that if you have four children one of them will definately have the disease... every time you get pregnant you have a new 1 in 4 chance. Do a google for Punits (sp) squares... this will show you a pretty simple way to calculate the chance of your child being a carrier and your child having the disease. You will have to do it once assuming you husband does not cary the gene and once assuming he does.
Good luck, don't worry, give it up to GOD... I wish you the best!
