Curriculum Help for My 7Th and 6Th Grader.

I just recently pulled my children out of school and have been home schooling them. (Going on the second week) I have built my own curriculum so far, due to the fact they really need to catch up in certain areas. They have been in a school situation where socialization was the main focus and not academics. I do believe in a healthy building of a social life, but there was a price to pay, and now my kids are years behind where they should be. My kids basically are at the level they were before they entered that school 2 years ago.
My question is this-
I would like to know about curriculums that you have tried and that get high raves. This home schooling is new to me and the material out there is a bit overwhelming. It is really great that there are so many choices, but I must say my head is spinning. I also would love to get together with a group where I could possibly get some ideas and so forth. Know of any such groups? I have spoken with a few moms who home school and gave me numbers of people they knew and it was great. With each call I gain more valuable info. None take part in any groups though.

-My children’s grade levels are 7th and 6th. (I have been teaching them together with the same material.) I may home school my youngest next year as well; he will be entering the 1st grade. It is undecided at this point.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to take this time to thank all who have provided me with some great information. I have already used some of the material. (I also am still going through some) There truly is an endless amount of material available; -it’s a good thing.
For next year I have come to a final decision to home school my youngest as well. I also have decided on a curriculum. I have signed my kids up for Connections Academy, which is actually part of Unified. I have gotten some great feed back on it and think it will really work for my children and myself.
Again, thank you for support and information. I am always open for more so please feel free to continue and send stuff my way.
Also- I still would like a group to go to and talk about home schooling. (like to… and actually have time for… hmmm….seems to be problem) Maybe an online group would be better…any ideas?

I am currently homeschooling my Kindergartener and preschooler. I love it! I'm proud of you for taking this step!! I have found wonderful ideas and support through the MN ECHO group--they have a Yahoo group that you can use to stay connected to the group. Also, join a homeschool co-op! They are wonderful! There are many groups--you just need to find one near your home. I stumbled upon one in my area and am so excited to get started with them in February. Contact me personally for more info. Best of luck!!

Check out the Wisconsin Virtual Academy: http://www.wivcs.org/index.html
I've heard good things about this online school and their curriculum. It's basically public school that you teach at home. I'm actually considering this school for my children as well, but I still have a few years to wait. Good luck!

I homeschooled my son last year for 8th grade. We had big problems with safety under the previous middle school principal. My son is now back at high school and took the time to give me a hug & kiss and say "thank you" to me for homeschooling him! Teenagers don't normally do that! LOL!

I used all the methods available for homeschooling in Wisconsin. I did this because some subjects were very fine with just handing my son the instruction book and he would "go to town" doing his school work. I used the Lifeworks by Abeka for those subjects. Abeka does come with a bible study but I didn't use it. Other subjects (Social studies mostly) I used the "unschooling" method. Discovery channels (I think there are 8 of them?), Military and History channels were a big help.

My son is also a boy scout so I used some of his merit badges he needed to earn as part of the curriculum because BSA explains all you need to know kind of like a mini lesson plan.

My area only had younger children homeschooling so we found it to be a bit of a challenge but worth it! Altho Wisconsin laws state you only need to teach the 5 core subjects, that doesn't mean you can't bridge out. My son and I learned Italian together. I have a ton of web sites on my favorites that could be of assistance and I will send those to you later. I have a few errands to run.

Don't be surprised if at some point your children get upset with being homeschooled. It seems to be common with 1st time homeschoolers that are older. Takes breaks when needed and remember that alot of hands-on life situations are learning/homeschooling situations!

Emmanuel Christian Center has a group that meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. It's a Homeschooler Support Group thing (not sure if that is it's correct name). If you would like more information you can call the church at ###-###-####. The church is located in Spring Lake Park.

Hope this helps,
J.

Hi. I'm a public school teacher but not anti-homeschooling. I expect you will get a lot of responses with groups. One is called hedfex. The website is hedfex.org. Also, if you have liberal views, there is a liberal homeschooling group (email me privately). Another thing to understand is that your children are at a point where their brain growth slows to less than 50% of what it was. Meanwhile there are major hormone changes associated with the onset of puberty. It typically starts mid-6th grade and goes to mid-9th grade. It is not unusual for them to not learn as well/quickly as they did before, during this time period. The problems you see with the school could have more to do with the special changes in this age group than with the school itself (a possibility, not knowing anything about the school in question). Usually the kids and their learning seem more "normal" again at some point in 9th grade.

I am an author/publisher/Mom CEO who works with some great homeschooling sites and so appreciate what you are trying to do!!! My favorites are the Old Schoolhouse Magazine, Heather Idoni's familyclassroom.net (a perfect place to post your question again) and www.homeschoolingradio.com. I am working on a series of books to help parents, kids and teachers with the curriculum for each grade. I only have Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten! and Let's Get Ready For First Grade! released at this time. Thus, only helping your 5 year old at this point. Email me at ____@____.com and I will send you a set of my books! Check out these resources as I am sure they will be able to help you with your 6th and 7th graders.
