Hi Ladies,
On the lighter side, I have a question. I have painted several murals in my life, different places. I am thinking of changing up my entry way. Right now, it has 14 inch horizontal stripes in a tone on tone color. It's not a big wall and is really the side of my staircase, so at it's tallest it's 10 feet and decreasing as the stairs do and about 10 feet wide. I like modern quirky stuff in my traditional house, at least one wow factor in every room. I am thinking of painting birch trees on that wall. I may have waited too long and the trend is passé now. What do you think? TIA

ETA: I am not really worried about my friends judging me, lol. They would laugh at that! When did that ever stop ME! Thanks for defending my right to choose. You ladies ROCK!
I just don't want to be repainting this too quickly because I feel less than current! There are times I wish we could exchange pics.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, I think I will do it!!! I might just have to incorporate some gradual hombre in the background.
Yes, Tat, I think birch trees are a little more common place but even that's out there for my suburbia.
I saw your profile pic- awesome artistry!

If you love it, do it. Who cares about "trends".

Not sure about current or out of date. We generally do what we want in our home without considering that.

What I would consider-- is it possible that you would be selling your house and moving soon?

Would this be a fun project for you? :) Would this be something you are doing because YOU would enjoy looking at it?

Those would be my questions.

I would order it as a wall applique. They aren't that expensive and if you don't like it in a year, you can take it off and try something else.

Ombre is very "on trend" right now and I love it! You could make your wall a neutral shade and use the ombre scale on the stairs! Last month's Real Simple had a staircase showing this and it was beautiful!!

I think trends really only matter, in that of fashion. And even then it is what makes you happiest. But 80's hair now....uhhhhh.

I think what ever you choose for your house will be great. Especially as an artist, which it sounds like you are or at least dabble in. No one will come to your house and say, "oh my, she painted birch, on this colonial walling? " lol, no one really cares that much. If it is beautiful, people will say just that. If you happen to have the kind of friends who will think this has passed, and judge you based on that, it may be time to find better, more realistic friends. The kind who pick you up when you fall, not the kind that judge you by your grade of birch :)

Go with it. Sounds amazing!

We painted birch trees on our huge living room wall. I have only ever had wow reactions. (not that we did it for a reaction!) I wouldn't have even considered or known about the trend. We just really like birch trees.

Who cares? I'm willing to bet no one!! Do it!

I am an artist and have murals in my past (before MS)...I have paintings floor to celing - mine, mom's grandmom's, great grand's, great aunts, friend's - in my small house and don't care about trends....paint what you love and want and if that changes down the line, it is easy enough for you to redo....or add too....a home is about solace not being current....so go for what you want!

i can't get my dh to come with me on a mural. we're getting ready to remodel our bedroom, and i'm going to end up with a huge woman-cave ie walk-in closet big enough to have a window, and my beautiful antique vanity within. i'm thinking of putting a mural in there, except all my damn clothes will be in the way!
