I have on both upper arms what looks to be like a rash. It is not because I have had it since I was a child. It doesn't itch of bother me. It looks like small little red bumps some are raised and some aren't. I was told by one Dr one time that it was folliculitis which is just an inflammation of the hair follicles and that nothing could be done. I hate it. My arms look like a teenagers face. It didn't bother me that much, but people are goofy and always asked me what type of rash did I contact. I am getting tired of explaining myself. My mother had this same thing, so I don't know if it genetic. Has anyone had this? Is there some sort of treatment for it. Just wondering if there was something I could do for it. I have tried moisturizers and exfoliators but they don't help.

What can I do next?

It tyically means you are not getting enough Essential Fatty Acids in your diet (EFAs). These are the good fats our bodies need, so your body is talking to you essentially. Up your good fats like eating nuts, seeds, hummus, avocados, nut butters like almond butter, EVOO, coconut oil, flaxseed oil, grounded flaxseeds and take a good quality fish oil like Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega + Vitamin D3 at www.vitacost.com or Carlson's is another good brand. Not all fish oils are created equal...inflammation is the key word here, when our bodies are inflammed we need to reduce with the good fats in our diets. It is vitally important for kids to get good fats, it helps nourish their brains and 75% of brain development occurs during the first two years of life, I mention this b/c you have two small kids. Hummus is a great toddler snack and snack for mom. My 18m old and I eat it with veggies almost every day when she wakes up from her nap. :)

Good Luck,

It sounds like keratosis pilaris, I have it a little on my thighs, and for me it gets worse during pregnancy. It is a buildup of dead skin cells that clump around hair follicles instead of just falling off your body. I have had good success with using a lactic acid lotion like Lachydrin-5 on Amlactin (I get mine at Walgreens) twice a day on the affected area. They are kinda expensive (~$15) but since I only use it those spots its lasts a long time. The lactic acid is supposed to "dissolve" the clump of cells and eventually open up the pore again. If you google keratosis pilaris you can find a lot of info about it, it is actually pretty common, but you seem to have a rather severe case. Maybe a dermatologist could even give you a stronger Rx cream than the OTC lotions. Good Luck.

Sarah is correct, it is keratosis pilaris. I have had it all my life too and alot of people in my family have it. It is genetic. There is no cure, but if you use one of the lotions she reccommended even every other day you will see dramatic improvement. Foliculitis is a related condition which I do get in one area as well but it is much more inflamed, feels kinda sore and more red and the bumps get much bigger. The lotions she mentioned use acid to slough away the dead skin cells that are building up and forming those bumps. I had a dermatologist that diagnosed me with this several years back.

I agree with vitamins as well, but good skincare products are essential so they don't strip your skin of precious oils and keep your pH balanced. I use botanically based products and a detox scrub that is awesome. A dry brush may help exfoliate those patches as well. Just don't pick at them like my daughter did (I didn't know it) and now she has scars!!

If you use the wrong type of products, like ones made with mineral oil, then nothing will work. You really have to use good skin and body care products. I'd be happy to share what I use and provide pics, testimonials and anything else. Give me your email address and I'd be happy to be of assistance to you. Hang in there......

HI K.,

I agree with Jasmine. I have had those bumps on my arms all of my life. It was not until I started supplementing with essential fatty acids (EFAs) that it went away.
It was a sign that my body really needed it.

As an aside, my babies do not get cradle cap as long as I am taking the EFAs.

I have been really please with the ones I get throught Shaklee. (www.shaklee.net/fruth)
