I imagine there must be a whole bunch of you tube tutorials out there to help one remember/ learn how to crochet. Can you point me to some of your favorites? I just bought 6 skiens of red heart kids yarn in "crayon" and 12 aluminum crochet hooks. I think this shold do the trick. I'm after an easy peasy vest/ sweater or cardigan for my 4 y.o. son. He measures 41" tall and weighs 42 lbs.

If you're a beginner, a vest isn't the best way to start. It involves some more advanced techniques. Start with something flat like a blanket.
There is a book called "Knitting for Dummies." I'm willing to bet there is a crochet version as well.
My mom and grandma crocheted. I learned to do the single and double crochet when I was young. So basically I can do scarves and blankets. However, I frequent thrift stores for fun. I have found many crochet magazines and even ones for beginners, for 25 cents. So if you ever go to thrift stores, keep your eyes open for them. Good luck!

It is free to make an account. There are tons of patterns for just about anything, many for free or for only a couple of dollars with an immediate PDF download. I go there all the time looking for new projects. I'm a knitter and I'm trying to learn crochet now. The search function is extremely good. You can customize your search to only include crochet, type of project, and if you only want free patterns or if you're willing to pay a couple dollars.
This is a good friend's book about how to learn to crochet. She's even got it as a left handed edition (this is to the right handed version). She's a left handed crocheter. It really is a great book!

Maybe one of those round knitting looms would make it easier.
There are tons of patterns.
Some friends and I all just taught ourselves how to crochet flowers to make a joint baby blanket for one of our group. It didn't take me that long to figure out, and I am not a knitter or anything. Just take it one step at a time :) I will say that we all adjusted the instructions slightly based on what worked for us, but we wanted variation within the blanket to represent all the different contributors. I just went off the written instructions in the pattern that we bought off etsy. Good luck!! It's pretty fun!!
