Crib to Toddler Bed Transition- Seeking Advice

We transitioned our daughter to her toddler bed earlier this week (she's 2 1/2 and we have a baby on the way due in March) and it has been a real challenge to actually keep her in the bed. She slept like a champ in her crib but has been up every night this week, multiple times and naptime has been equally difficult. We are currently using the walk her right back to bed with minimal interaction technique but it doesn't seem to be working. No one in the house is well rested! Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Get a twin mattress and place it in the corner of the room. Put the fitted sheet on it and let her make a nest of toys, and blankets on there. Our daughter filled hers with books and her lovey , and her favorite blanket.

Get a gate, that she cannot climb out of and place it in her bedroom doorway.

During the day, talk about how at night, she needs to sty in her bed and in her room. all night.

At night do the night time routine, Ours was read about 3 books, quietly, not with any questions and just simple reading. Make sure the lights are low. When you finish turn on a quiet CD with music or with a story on it. Kiss her good night and tell her "it is time for sleep."

You are doing a good job of just silently walking her back.. It will take a few days and nights, for her to realize you are serious and will not back down.

Okay so probably not what you want to hear, but I'm afraid this may last awhile! :( We moved my daughter to a big bed at 22 months b/c we were pregnant with number 2. We moved her 2 months before baby was due, per doctor's suggestion. Her ped. said that at that age 2 months is like a life time. After that amount of time they won't feel the same jealousy issues over the baby using "their stuff" if it's been out of use that long.

I don't think it's because it's a toddler bed vs a twin bed, but honestly, if you have the means, I would use a bigger bed. Twin or even full would be easier for you, but whatever, if you already have this and want to keep using it, I don' think that is the issue.

Anyway, my daughter was SO, so, SO difficult. It took months and months before I really felt like when I put her to bed she'd stay in bed. We did the putting back to bed routine and sometimes it worked faster than other times, and honestly, it wasn't pretty but we didn't feel like we had much of a choice. We were committed to making it work, and it did, but it worked in baby steps! We couldn't put her back in the crib (we used our crib right away for both kids and didn't really use a bassinet, so we did need it.) and we didn't want her sleeping with us and we didn't want to lay in there until she fell asleep, so we were left with this option.

I say stay consistent and it will work out. You won't get much sleep in the meantime. I used to just sit on my bed which was only steps from her door and read a book so that I could just go back and forth. I would say on average it took between 20-60 minutes/night for the first few weeks. It dwindled after that.

She's really too old for a toddler bed, so if this keeps up try her in her big kid bed. Toddler beds are usually for toddlers, ages 12 months up to 24 months. Then around 2 - 2 1/2 the parents start transitioning them to their big kid beds.

She will get used to it. The younger they move the easier it is. They know bed is for sleeping and when they go lay down they lay there. When their older they have it figured out that it can be play time too.

Since you have so much time before the baby arrives, you could wait a while longer. Maybe as she understands better that the baby is coming and needs the crib, and she's going to be the big sister, maybe it'll make more sense to her. I dread the day we move my son to a bed from his crib. My mom always swears by keeping them in a crib until they're 3.

Otherwise, I'd keep doing what you're doing by walking her back to bed with no speaking. She'll eventually learn that, "Gosh, every time I get up I have to go right back to bed, so why bother getting up." Maybe start a reward system. Maybe she gets a small prize, like a piece of candy, for every night she doesn't get up more than twice. Then up the ante once she gets the hang of that. Maybe you could even do something like get one of those princessy mosquito nets that kind of hang around the bed...making her feel more closed in and secure? Try to remember it's a big change, like moving a newborn into the crib, except for your newborn is now walking, talking and reasoning. It'll take time to adjust. In the meantime, I'd go back to the old saying, Nap when she's napping. Good luck!

Go back to the crib.

It worked. She slept well. Everyone in the house got sleep. You have
time before the new baby arrives. AND if you need to, you can buy a
2nd crib bassinet for the newborn.

My theory is don't rock the boat and/or don't fix what isn't broken.

go back to the crib. so everyone gets their rest. iitis only sept.. the new baby isnt due for 6 months.. and a newborn can sleep in a bassinet for a couple of months in moms room. so there is no big hurry to get the toddler out of the crib. we moved our kids at 3.. and they stayed in the toddler bed. cause they were old enough to understand.

I just transitioned my 2 yr old twin girls from crib to toddler bed. They were NOT having it! Then my brilliant husband came up with an idea.

Every night I have to sit in a chair between their beds and just sit with them. I turn off the lights, give them books and a flashlight and put all their stuffed animals in bed with them. This has been our method of getting them to go to sleep in their own beds. We haven't figured out yet how to get them to go to bed on their own without us, but for now we're okay with this because everyone including my 11 month old is getting the sleep we need! The twins go to bed fairly fast this way and when they do I put their books in their night stand and turn off their flashlights.

Occasionally we wake up in the morning to find one or both jumped in bed with us but we just started putting up a baby gate in front of their door so they can't "escape" haha!
