Hey Mama's

When dropping our girls off at school in the morning traffic is hurried and unsafe, Parents are parking in the no parking zones ect..
I called the school to ask if we can create a Drop and roll program. Last year at a different school the dad's volunteered to stand in the street (no parking area by the school door)and opened the door and greet each child in order to get out and go into the school, which allowed a steady flow of the cars in line to drive up and allow thier little one to get out safely.

I was asked to creat a flyer asking the parents to volunteer in the am to greet the children as they go into the school and they have to be committed! i need your ideas as to how to word the flyer. I'm stuck and doing several things at one time so i thought i would ask ya. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your good advice and experiences! I created a stop sign flyer and used most of the wording ideas you submitted to me and it turned out wonderfully! I called the program Love them and leave them lane which Jessin Texas suggested. I faxed the flyer to the principle and they have approved the program, i did speak with a teacher this morning and she explained how rude some of the parents are when she tells them they are in a no parking lane, go figure. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

In addition, the school in my old n'hood used to get police involved especially at the beginning of the year, and they warned and sometimes ticketed parents. This helped a lot to solve the problem.

What about a "WE NEED YOU" with a big arrow pointed at them like in the Uncle Sam ad.... with continued "TO HELP KEEP THE FLOW OF CARS GOING in the morning drop off. We can make the new "Drop N Roll" a success if you will volunteer one or two weeks out of the whole year."

Then in smaller print, go in to Q&A:
What is Drop N Roll?
Drop N Roll is an idea submitted by a parent frustrated with the long lines in the parking lot in the morning and the numerous cars in the no-parking zone. The idea is to have one or two parents volunteer for one week to open car doors, greet children, help them gather their backpacks, and otherwise keep the line moving.

What do I have to do if I volunteer?
As cars pull up, you might tell them to pull forward more. You can help children by opening car door and greeting them with a smile .......

What time do I have to be there? Till when do I have to stay?
. . . .

Who do I contact about picking a week for me to volunteer?

Just did a search and found a district that has this on their website. I love the "Love them and leave them" Lane.

Northfield Community School and The Northfield Police Department have established optional lanes to drop off and pick up students at the school. These "Love them and leave them" lanes make it easy and safe to navigate the congested and busy area right before and after school. My kids' school uses this program. Only the teachers run it. they call it "carpool" and the people that run it are the "carpool kings and queens"
parents raised money to get them all rain geer for those raining mornings where they still sit out there.
They make drop off fun too...they'll have a radio outside playing music, and dancing. sometimes they have theme days! like just before holiday break they wear reindeer headband bopper things, or for halloween they are out there in their costumes.

sorry...I got off track, you asked for wording...

Stress that it is for the safety of your child. also stress how it will make the system work better.
words like "help us take the hectic out of your morning drop off"
"keep the kids from crossing traffic or through cars"

it works sssoooo well at our school.
they get thousands of kids dropped off and picked up at the end of the day within 20 minutes!

What about SOS (Save Our Students). I read about a school mom doing this. It sounds like a great idea and you should be so proud of yourself for trying to keep all the kids safe, seeing a problem and instead of just whining about it, you're jumping in to help solve it. Kudos to you momma! You've already had so many great suggestions, so I would end up just repeating those....but the SOS part might really drive the point home (pun intended). LOL

We have a curb side drop off & pick up at our kids school...works great. ALL parents HAVE to use curb side during designated times (8:10am-8:30) and 3:15pm-3:30. After the designated times are over, a STOP sign is put up and parents must park and walk their children in.

During the scheduled drop off times, Assistant teachers are getting the kids out in the morning and Lead Teachers are bringing the children to the cars at the end of the day. Works great.

Maybe the school can help by offering up staff. Our school has sent out rules too about Passing around other cars, obeying the speed, getting children buckled in a designated area & those that do not follow the rules, will be banned from curb side.

Just thought I would throw out some of the things our school offers and maybe you can get the school to do one end of the day and parents on the other end?

I like to use Microsoft publisher, and see if the "signs" will work. There is a Help wanted sign that I have altered before, and it gets attention, so does the stop sign, you just add some wording that works for you!

It seems you wrote in haste, so I am assuming from this part, "which is at the last school the dad's volunteered," means that dads/parents volunteered to greet children at the last school your children attended before this one. If that is the case, I would contact that school to find out what they use for a flyer. It is obviously effective.

Good luck,
