Cradle Cap Rash

about 2 weeks ago, my daughter (now 6 weeks) developed a rash (little red bumps) that started on her head and neck, then spread over her chest, stomach, around to her back, then down her arms and started on her legs (took 2 days to spread...) I took her to her pedi who said that it was a cradle cap rash, and prescribed a cream to fix it. It worked fairly well, but didn't quite get rid of all of it. Well, the rash is starting to spread again... much slower than the first time, and I want to nip it in the bud...the only problem is that I don't want to use the same cream unless I have no other option. (I read the pamphlet that came with it, and it said that prolonged use in infants can cause developmental issues.... o_O no thanks. I think I would rather let her have the rash!) has anyone else had this issue? if so, can you recommend an alternative or an OTC medication I can try? (I would clear it with the pedi first, but I want to go in with something other than "I don't really want to use that again...)

Edit~sorry! It isn't baby acne, they are a different *type* of bump...she did have the baby acne, and that cleared itself up...Her pedi said that sometimes cradle cap will advance down the body in the form of a rash (the one she has)...the cradle cap under her hair IS flaky, and I use baby shampoo on it, and a soft-bristle toothbrush to kind of peel the flakes off (pedi recommended) she gets a bath every night, 2 days plain water, 1 day baby wash... (she was a post-due baby and has really dry skin...)

What can I do next?

My youngest son had cradle cap real bad. After his bath I would run baby oil on his head every day and it cleared up rather quickly. I hope this helps.

There is something OTC called 'cradle cap care' I think it's called.... in a greenish bottle. I used this for my daughter. It's kind of oily. I slathered that over the affected area and combed out the skin flakes, then scrubbed her scalp hard with baby shampoo (this is what the pedi told me to do). That took care of it!

Although... cradle cap doesn't usually have R. bumps that I know of... cradle cap is usually very flaky.

My baby had cradle cap that spread down from his hairline and covered his forehead, between his eyes, on the bridge of his nose and behind his ears. I used what someone else mentioned this stuff called Cradle Cap Care. I got it at Wal-Mart. It is in the baby section and I think has like some winnie the pooh characters on it. Anyway, I would put it on, making sure I didn't get any in his eyes and I would gently brush away the flakiness. Then I would put neosporin on any bumps. I cleared it up really nicely. I used Selson Blue on his scalp and just washed and brushed. Good luck! I will eventually clear up:) I have heard a lot of people say they just washed their babies with Cetaphil with really good results as well. I haven't tried it yet, but that was the advice I got from all the moms with like 3 or more kids;)

My daughter had similar around 6 weeks too. I used Head and Should shampoo on her head, neck, and back (that was as far as it progressed on her). The pedi said that was fine, and it worked in about two days. Check with your pediatrician.

It kind of sounds like the rash is baby acne. There's nothing you can really do for it. It just has to go away on its own.
For the cradle cap under the hair, use a dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders. You only need a teeny bit. Just let it sit on her scalp for a few seconds, then rinse it off. Don't dry her head off. While she's still damp, take a baby brush and brush all the flaky stuff off. It may take awhile and in some spots you might have to scrub a little. That should take care of it. If not, then wait a few days and do it again. It worked wonders for both my girls and the cradle cap was gone in a few days.

i have some berts bees diaper rash ointment and it states that you can put it on rashes too. ( i think ) i put it on our 4 month olds neck rash at night and by morning it was much better. the rash ended up drying up and flaking off. but berts is all natural and they have a line for baby products. i bet you could call them and ask what they would recomend. btw just because its all natural dosent mean its always safe for baby...think posin ivy it all natural but i sure dont want to be near it ; ) there are also natural healing oils avalible. good luck hope your baby is ok soon.

Try vaseline on the head, I'm not sure about the rest of the body. It makes them all greasy but it sticks around for a couple of days and last through a bath. It will help with the cradle cap. I would ask your doctor about using any dandruff shampoos as those chemicals are pretty harsh. My doctor said no way to using them on our little one. Or try olive oil. Some cultures use this instead of lotion everyday on babies.
