Coxsackie!

My 5 month old boy has coxsackie. The doctor said it's a common childhood/summer virus and it lasts about 1 week. He's on the downslope since it began on Monday but I feel so badly for my little guy. He's such a good boy! It started on Monday and the blisters were awful on his hands, face and feet. They are starting to dry up now and kind of flake off (gross...I know!). I've used oatmeal baths at night in case they itch and Eucerince cream on the spots that have started to dry up. However...now I am starting to show some signs of it!!! I had a fever on Thursday and Friday and I have a wicked sore throat and a few spots on my hands. Has anyone else experienced this and do you have some advice on how to manage it? I think my son is handling it pretty well although today he's been pretty fussy which is unlike him. Now I'm worried about me. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

One of my twins had that when he was an infant too. We found a homeopathic remedy called borax helpful with the rash used along with the traditional meds.
Good luck.

HI! Just a warning to all! If your child continues to get worse go back to the doctor. My daughter when she was 3 was diagnosed with coxsackie virus and it turned out to be a very rare but potentially lethal disease called "kawasaki disease". Go to www.kdfoundation.org for more information. I don't say this to scare only educate. My daughter was hospitalized and recieved the treatment and is fine but it does start out looking like coxcaskie virus sometimes. I now live by the rule of, "when in doubt, find out!" A.

Hi E.. My son (9 months) also recently had this virus, and the good news is that it will clear up on its own fairly quickly (which I'm sure your doctor told you). One thing that my doctor suggested for my son was a benadryl-maalox mixture - perhaps it will work for you too. Mix one teaspoon liquid benadryl w/ one teaspoon maalox and swallow. My doc says it helps coat the throat and may make the blisters in the throat and mouth feel a little better for a while (so you can eat). Of course, talk to your doctor before trying it, but maybe this will help you too. Good luck.

Hi E., my son (will be 2 in Aug) got coxsackie last May (first-time) and it lasted about a week too. At the daycare he goes to had an outbreak of it and it seems that everybody got it. Even my husband and I got a mild case of it too. Super contagious and very common. Just keep washing hands and disinfect things that you touch. Feel better and good luck! C.

I have no helpful advice except to make you feel a little better...we've been there too! About 2 years ago(I was pregnant) and my 4 sons passed it from one to an other for about a month...you can also see vomiting/diarrhea...so don't stress if that shows it's ugly face...there's not a lot to do but suffer through...and now I laugh about how horrible those weeks were with everyone sick and me frantically chasing kids with paper towels cleaning up who knows what all day long :) Feel better, C.

Hi there. My 2 yr. old niece currently has the coxsackie virus and the pediatrician told my sister that it is a viral infection & very contagious. It is called hand, foot and mouth disease. There aren't any antibiotics to help shorten the timeframe. Her throat is very sore, she has high fevers and she has a hard time swallowing things...even liquids. My sister has been giving her Motrin to help lower the fever. She is very uncomfortable. My husband was very sick about a week ago. His fever ranged from 101-103 and his throat was very red and raw. We thought he had strep throat or mono. His blood work/throat culture came back negative for strep. We think that he has the coxsackie virus too. It is going on 2 weeks now and his throat is still sore. Good luck and just wash your hands all of the time.

hello E.,

i haven't experienced coxsackie but i can tell you that therapeutic grade essential oils are highly antiviral and are very effective for topical relief as well. they work well for chicken pox, shingles, strep, sore throats, herpes ...

I have been holistic for over 20 years but have found medical grade essential oils to work best and they are the most fun to use as they smell incredible. i use them for all kinds of conditions for myself and my family, from healing burns to viruses to helping the kids wind down and sleep.

The dreaded cox sackie virus! My son had it at 3 mos, the fever is the worst part since it can be pretty high. It will take some time for him to rebound since he is so young, but his disposition should be back on track shortly.
To prevent spreading it to through out the house make sure you wash your hands all the time, wash all bed linens, change tooth brushes, sterilize toys and bottles amd pacifiers.
You probably have the virus if you are showing the signs. Get as much rest as possible, lots of fluid, tylenol for the fever- I found that my symtoms were pretty bad for 2-3 days and then went away fairly fast. I still get the virus every now and then, but usually only have a sore throat for a day or so and very small bumps on my hands.

Hope you are all better soon!

Hi E., I just want you to know that both my husband and I have had coxsackie. Our son has had it a few times. My husband has had it twice. There is not much you can do. The second time my husband got it the doctor gave him a liquid lidocaine to drink every 6 hours. When I had the doctor told me use chloraseptic throat spray which numbs the throat. As for the baby just make sure he is drinking enough fluids because if the sores are bad in the back of the throat that can cause a young child not to eat or drink because it is so painful. I hope you feel better soon.

my husband got it from the kids too.. usually adults don't get it but he did. He used peroxide to rinse his mouth and listerine... mix both with some water.. and swish.. it really helped heal quicker for him. Good luck.. Coxsackie is horrible.. eating yogurt for you and the baby helps too... it soothes your throat.. also ice pops.. i know the baby is small .. but ice pops really do help releave the pain... good luck

Hi E.,
My 2 1/2 year old has it too! He has the sores all over the back of his throat. I thought he had an ear infection b/c he was so irritable and yanking. I took him and it turned out to be coxsackie. The pain is radiating from his ear. WE are going on almost a week. He picked it up from camp. My other 2 (4 and 5 months) have not gotten it. My doctor said just wait it out. He is getting better. Just keep washing stuff (crib sheets, binky, towels etc). It stinks, but you will get through it. I am in the home stretch with it. Good luck and feel better. Hope you and your husband are okay!

Hi E.-
My son has had it twice. One episode was so bad, he refused to open his mouth for 3 days because the sores on his tongue and in his mouth and throat were so painful. He also refused to speak and to eat for several days. I had to force liquids in his mouth with a medicine dropper. I also took a wet washcloth and put it in the freezer. When it was frozen, I would give it to him to suck on. Once the sores started to heal up, (and he would open his mouth!) I gave him milkshakes, popsicles, slurpees etc. It is a horrible virus! (I have had it too!) All you can do is rest as much as possible, drink liquids (hot tea and hot soup made my throat feel better) and wait it out. Also- for the sores, I found that Aquaphore was helpful to ease pain and itching.
Good luck and hang in there!

Hi! My Daughter just got over Coxsackie last month. She started in with the fever on a Friday, a rash with some blisters on Saturday, Sunday was the worst as she would not eat or drink anything (we actually had to force feed her with a medicine syringe)Then Monday she slowly started to recover and by that Wednesday she was fine, just a few splotches but nothing serious and she was eating well again. Neither my husband nor my self, or my parents (as we were living with them at the time) caught the virus but I think my brother did. He had the blisters, soreness, and a sore throat so he went to the doctors but because it is a childhood disease I think they passed it off as an allergic reaction.....but really, he's not allergic to anything! I am still very convinced that he had the virus and the doctor was clueless. He came down with these symptoms around 6-7 days after she was better and the incubation period can be that long, 3 to 6-7 days. I've heard though that once you've had Coxsackie, it is like chicken pox's and you build an immunity to it. So the good news is you probably won't pass it back to your son the bad news is that you could pass it to your husband or other family members. And this is gross, but something to keep in mind, the virus will still be in his poo for a month after the virus seems to be gone. My girlfriend, who works for Sitrin, did research on the virus when my daughter had Coxsackie. She works with the elderly and is around my daughter lots, so she researched Coxsackie to know more on how to keep the Sitrin residents from getting it from her. Coxsackie can be fatal in some cases, to an elderly person. Hope this helped!

E.,
Coxsackie virus is as your pediatrician stated a common summer virus. Be forworned it can lead to pinkeye (both kids and adults), also other more serious problems (in adults). Your son seems to be weathering it quite well, the fussiness is common; think of how you would feel if you had these blisters on you. Make sure he stays well hydrated and is eating, even if he only eats a little at a time. If you are concerned then you should call your pediatrician. Also if you think you have have it now then you should call your PCP or a dermatologist. My dermatologist, Dr. John Edelglass, is in Woodbridge right off of Amity Road and is great. Let me know if there is anything else I could do to help you and how you make out as well.
Hugs,
T.

Hi E.,

I just got over Coxsackie myself. It's really just an inconvenience. My feet were the worst to get over since walking sometimes hurt. Also, try to eat soft foods. Ice cream goes down pretty easily. Also drink a lot of water! I also had Strep throat at the same time that I had the Coxsackie. So if your throat really hurts, I'd get it checked out by the doctor. I just think that your immunity is low so better safe than sorry! Feel better - it took me about 5 days total to feel back to normal from the Coxsackie. Funny thing is that my fingers are now really dry so be sure to drink a lot of water and moisturize!! Also, motrin for the pain!!

HI E.,
My son had this when he was 2 (now 13), he actually slept thur his 2nd birthday party. Fortunately he didn't have any sores on his hands or feet.
I eventually did get it also. I thought I was going to die. It felt like the worse flu I had ever had. Every bone in my body ached. It was hard to get out of bed. Fortunately it did only last a few days. Good Luck!
