I am having trouble in my marriage. I want to go to counseling. With the way the economy is though, I am worried about the cost. Can someone give me an idea of how much I should expect to pay to a therapist? Any advice or insight about therapy would be good. Thank you

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for responding and the prayers. I do not live close to a university and I had not thought about insurance covering it so that is my next step. There is no infedelity, drugs/alcohol, or abuse, he rarely goes out with friends. My husband works a lot and I feel like a married single, and like we are losing/have lost our connection. Just need to sort through my feelings. We can give each other hell. Thanks again

You might try Samaritan Counseling Center. They have various locations in the Houston area and work (or at least used to) on a sliding scale according to what you can afford. The number is ###-###-####. If you google "samaritan counseling center houston" you can get more information.

Congrats on the decision to get counseling. It is a big step, and a very good one.

i also am having trouble with my marriage, and didnt want to go to counselling because it cost $50 a session.

Im not sure which area you live in , but if you live near huntsville the jack stagg counselling clinic at sam houston state uni offers free marriage, child and personal counselling, you get 8 sessions. we are on session 3 now, and it has really helped us - they are not young kids, they are all final year students, and mostly are mature students, the lady who counsells us has been married for 25 years and has 6 kids, so she not only brings realistic experience, but also the benefit of her training, if you wanted her in particular her name is lori brabham, or branham i cant remember which.

the phone number is ###-###-####.

Try counseling at a church. That should help with cost. There are also several nonprofit organizations that provide help for marriages. I can't think of the names, but a quick google search should help. I know several marriages that were saved by these programs. Blessings...

If you do belong to a church, pastors can do counseling for free. They have limited counseling training, so it's a good start, but you should probably move on after a few sessions if things aren't improving too much.

Pastors should be able to refer you to agencies that do counseling on a sliding scale which may help as well.

I remember our pastor telling in premarital counseling us that if we spent $15,000 on a wedding, we should be willing to spend at least that much to keep our marriage together later. Great idea, but, of course, if you don't have $15,000, how could you possibly spend it on counseling?

Someone else mentioned universities, which is a great idea. Where I went to school, the university counseling center was for students only, but the practicum students in the counseling psychology department saw clients from outside the university on a sliding scale. You can call the department to ask about it. Counseling centers may be in psych depts, education departments, family studies departments, etc., so you may need to do some asking around to find out which department has the program.

Good luck and I sure hope you are successful!!

If you have medical insurance check your allowed coverage via that - lots of programs have counseling included.

If this is not viable, some counselors will work with you on a sliding scale based on your income / expenses.

Another source is through your church / a church. Several area churches have counseling programs available on a sliding scale as well.

M., Sorry you are having marital problems. Counseling can be very expensive. As most have suggested already check with your church to see if they offer some type of free counseling. Also check with your insurance company because some of them will offer so many sessions at no cost. If either of you are working there might also be an employee assistance program that may have some free sessions.

I'm not sure exactly what problems you guys are having but there is also a site you can go to www.marriagebuilders.com

If focuses alot on infedelity, however there is also alot of tools to help you with other problems & it might help you. The questionairs are fantastic and really helped me during our crisis.

Best of luck to you

I agree with everyone to check with your insurance if you have current coverage. If you don't, try First Baptist Church of Magnolia. You do not have to be a member of the church to attend counseling there. Here is a link to the couseling ministry they offer.

Hi M.,
I am sorry to hear about your problems. Before I would "pay" high dollar fees for therapy I would first consult a minister. If you are not involved in a local church try to get into a good bible church. Ministers are trained in counseling and their services are free. Most "paid" counselors will keep you coming back and coming back and are not really truly concerned about your issue- that is how they make their living-and they can charge anywhere from $100 to $250 per hour. Most Ministers and Pastors have the love of Jesus in their hearts and are usually more compassionate to an issue and will treat the whole person with their problems. I will pray for you and your problems.
Good luck and blessings

We have a family therapist who charges $140 per hour. But I do know that you can find therapists that charge based on your income. Check with the United Way or local churches. Going to a therapist has changed my life. A good one can really help you.

If you have a church check out their referrals. Often pastors have counseling training or even degrees in fields where they're trained to do this. One thing I've always heard to do is to make sure you are both going to one that the other hasn't already had sessions with. Builds trust.
Will keep you in my prayers tonight.

Check with a local church sometimes they do counseling for free or a small fee. Also, check the listings for counselors with a psych degree vs a Doctor. Some counseling services are willing to cater payment to what you can afford. That's what we did. Instead of the standard $100.00 she had us paying only $40.00 a session. Good luck and hope this helps.

Try dialing 211. There are billboards all over the Corpus Christi and Houston areas about free marriage classes/counseling. I'm sure someone on the end of that line can point you in the right direction.

I'm always sorry to hear about anyone's marital strife. I'm glad you are willing to seek help. Most people don't seek help, and those who do rarely get encouragement from those in good stable marriages without hearing "here's what we are doing right". Sometimes seeking help is what makes you stronger than those "happy" couples b/c you are stepping out, willing to change something and accept something in your life that might be hard to do.

I know that most therapists take insurance, so see what your insurance/company provides in that regards. Mine provides 25 sessions of any type of mental health therapy for $20 copay/session, and then something like $100/session after that.

Blessings to you and your husband today M. S!

I can't give you a who TO go to but let me give you a who NOT to go to! Do NOT go to Robin Brown Walton. We have been under court order to use her as a co-parenting coach and arbitrator in a custody issue and she has done nothing but screw us over, going with the parent with more money which is completely the opposite of what my 16 year-old daughter wants. We are currently working to overturn her stupidity. Check people out with the board for counselors before you choose someone...I wish we could have!

Assuming you have typical problems, money, chores, sex, etc. nothing abusive or crazy, I would like to suggest Dr. Laura's 'The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands' it's a great book that YOU read and then impliment the suggestions. It's not the kind of book that you have to read the whole thing before starting to implement, it's quick easy and oh so true. I'm sure you can pick up a used copy for cheap on Amazon or at 1/2 Priced books. It's something you can do now, until you get to counsiling. Please try it, it will make a difference as soon as you implement it's suggestions!

If you don't have a pastor or insurance counseling coverage, I second the Samaritan Center http://www.samaritanhouston.org/

They have a lot of therapists, so if you don't click with who you see, you can try a different one. And as someone said, they do have satellite locations, you may not have to go to Clear Lake.

Hi M. S,

I am so sorry to hear of your marital issues.

While recognizing money may be tight for counseling at this time, I want to suggest you and your husband frame that cost by looking at the financial and emotional costs of divorce. When you look at splitting your income(s) to cover two homes and two of everything that goes with two households PLUS the emotional impact on yourselves and especially your children, any counseling that helps is a BARGAIN and an investment in a happier marriage and family life.

Look at all the great alternatives suggested in other replies and also consider creative ways to come up with the money to cover the counseling.

I agree with the suggestion of identifying your individual wants and needs and finding a counselor who is results-oriented. ALSO - if one of you is more open to counseling, find a counselor that suits the other person better. I've often found that different people relate better to different counselors.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Good luck,
Parent Coach J. B

Hi.

Unaware of you location, I would recommend finding a Samaritan Counseling Center. They work on a sliding scale, they take insurance and in my experience have been very effective. My advice: if you end up with a counselor you do not like or are not 100% comfortable with, change immediately. A bad session can really deter you or your spouse from seeking the appropriate help.

Counseling SAVED my marriage.

Hello! If you have insurance you can get counseling for the price of your co-pay. The prices for counseling out of pocket ranges from $85-125. Some specialties are upwards of $200. If you are in the Belton area, call Fran Strange ###-###-####. She is a family therapist located at 404 N. Main. She is a dear friend of mine and she is an excellent therapist. My father is a therapist in Conroe, TX. I wish you the best in your search for a therapist.
Take care,

My husband and I are currently seeing a counselor, and it's $150 an hour. Yikes!
We're not covered by our insurance, and have been needing to go to counseling for a while. We first made an appt. with a pastor at our church. After a couple sessions of that, he realized he was over his head with our issues, and referred us to this counseling group.
When we discovered the cost, we put it off for a while b/c we couldn't afford it. Now, almost a year later, my husband started meeting individually with this pastor, and told him how bad it had gotten. Because it's pretty much counseling or divorce for us at this point, the church had covered the cost of counseling for us.
I know there are a couple large churches in Houston that probably have licensed counselors on staff. They also might have a couple of staff members who are trained in "pastoral counseling". I would call and ask to speak to their "Congregational Care" pastor.
GL! I know how it is!

Hi I too have issues in my marriage. I called 1 counselor & she took $120 an hour up front at the visit, and then it was up to my insurance company to pay me back!!! But I can't afford that, so I need to look into calling my insurance company to see if they have any that I can just pay a copay??? Good luck though, I need some too. Until you get counseloring & even after I'm a great listener, so email me any time. You never know we may be struggling with the same issues in our marriages??? Take care, Jules :)
