Could My Recent Start of Birth Control Be Affecting My Low Milk Supply?

I have just started back to using birth control after 4 wks, and have noticed a huge decrease in my milk supply. I've been pumping every3 hrs and instead of getting my normal 6-8 oz, I'm only getting 3 (a little discouraging when my little one eats 5 every 2 hrs!) The only change I've made this last week is starting back on the pill- the mini pill that is- and was just curious as to whether or not this could be the reason? Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Progesterone ONLY birth control is safest while breastfeeding... also they started you off kinda early too, usually OBs start the discussion on birth control on your 6 week postpartum visit.

Keep hydrated, eat a healthy diet, add oatmeal and power pump as well as nurse often. Power pumping is pumping every 2 hours and also pump the other breast while infant is on the other side. Stockpile EVERY drop... by month 4-5, your ability to pump will greatly diminish anyways those your supply will actually be greater than it is now.

If this doesn't make you feel your supply is back... look into getting fenugreek WITH Blessed thistle - they work best together than just fenugreek alone. Check out www.kellymom.com for more great info and advice about breastfeeding!

Not sure about the mini-pill, but it is a hormone of SOME sort, so it is definitely a possibility. I know when I went back on the pill (regular combo) my supply dried up within DAYS.

Check with your doctor to be sure, but it is not supposed to affect milk supply and I was on it with my first two the entire time I nursed. I also produce a ton of milk, though, and usually would stop pumping before I was really through since I would run out of room in the bottles (8-12 ounces per "session"). Every woman's body is different though, so it is worth exploring. I never pumped that often, though, for fear of needing a dairy tanker. Probably the best way to check for yourself would be to go off it for a month (using back-up!!) and see if your supply goes back up.

I got the Depo shot 6 weeks post partum and it has affected my milk supply significantly. With the help of Healthy nursing tea, I was able to produce more milk.

Be mindful of what you ingest while nursing. If you have seen this decrease then you must be realistic about what is happening. My gut tells me that no birth control pill is safe while nursing your baby.

YES! You are taking some hormones now so it will definitely effect it.
