my 5 yr. old son got sick about 3 or 4 weeks ago with a head cold and a sinus infection, he was put on amoxicillian the 1st go around then when he was diagnosed with the sinus infection he gave him cefdinir and said to also give him triminic cough, but they dont have that one anymore so i gave him musinex well now a month later he still has the cough and its not a dry cough he has mucus, please help should i take him back or will this go away on its on? oh and he does have allergies and is on nose spray and singular and just started allergy drops about 3 weeks ago?
Hi, G., take him back to the doctor. He probably has an allergy on top of the sinus infection -- likely the allergy got him irritated enough to get the infection, and now the allergy won't go away. Try to get a referral to an allergist who can pinpoint the problem.

My daughter has severe allergies. Do not let the doctor put him on Alegra, it causes pain in the legs and lower back. The doctor kept saying my daughter was having growing pains and it took a few years to figure out it was the Alegra causing the pains. Once she was off that the pain quit. But as far as the cough goes get him back to the doctor. He could have something else causing the cough other then allergies. Have you tried cough drops? These do help my daughter when her cough gets real bad from allergies. Also if you can get him to drink any form of tea it will help him a lot with his allergies and his cough.
I would immediately seek a 2nd opinion from a different doctor. It may be allergies, or maybe not. The mucus especially if it has color to it, would concern me.
But why take the chance?
They have given him some high powered drugs and they haven't done much, I would NOT continue to do so, unless told to by a different doctor, as giving a small child too many antibiotics at an early age can actually make his immune system unresponsive to antibiotics later. Just be sure you follow the instructions exactly though, you cant give it to him for 2 days and he feels better and you skip a day, etc. (I'm not suggesting that you've done anything wrong, just an FYI to the public)
Seek a 2nd opinion, if your doctor does not seem that concerned about this, find another doctor. After a month and 3 different drugs and several visits to the doctor, if my kid hadn't improved, and my doctor wasn't as concerned about this as I am, I'd be looking for another doctor.
Does he have a hard time digesting dairy foods? that can make kids snotty and prone to colds. another thing, since he's been through antibiotics is he needs probiotics to replenish his friendly bacteria. Friendly bacteria lives in our intestines in a delicate balance with yeast. Taking antibiotics kills ALL bacteria and then the yeast overgrows. Yeast eats sugar to multiply and then it weakens the immune system. Avoid sugary foods and give him probiotics for a while (or always). You can get them in powder at the health food store. I use jarrow lab's jarrodophilus powder. I mix it into her water during her bedtime snack. Also, it comes in yogurt but if your kid is mucousy, he does NOT need any dairy right now.
Also, since my daughter had pneumonia last year, we take SambuActin from Solaray (a chewable elderberry and vitamin C supplememnt , also from the health food store) everyday. good luck. I know it is frustrating.

"My daughter is 7 yrs old, but I can relate to "cough scare". During cold season we dealt with that dreadful cough that partically kept my child up at night(when she was 3-4 yrs old). With much concern about her developing a sore throat or chest, the doctor prescribed something to help open up her air-way. Even though my child doesn't have asthma, we were given ALBUTEROL (17 GRAMS) to be administered only when she had an overbearing cough (that was only during the cold season). They also give us a AeroChamber Plus with ComfortSeal Mask (Monaghan Medical Corp), which is designed for administing the med to younger children. It even comes with a picture of a Teddy Bear for demo'ing to the child. We don't have a need to use it each time she gets a cold, but whenever it's a persistant cough, she gets a couple of pumps and back to sleep she goes. We also use a "cool mist" humidifer, sometimes with a little Vick's Vapor oil in it.

My child does suffer from allergies and we use Zyrtec and Flonase which does help her a lot. I would also highly recommend the "Children's Sudafed" line, because they have different ones targeted for what you want to rid your baby of.

you need to get him off all those drugs! they are suppressing his immune system, the immune system provided by his maker with good reason! go to a health food store and buy something worth while.
G. he probably needs to be put on nebulizer. my advice is take him back, point out there is still cough. if you're told it will go away, ask about nebulizer. you should be able to pick it up at the ped's office. he may also order an xray of his chest. first things first, get him back to the doctor.

Consult with a "Medical Intuitive". I can recommend a few, as well as accupuncturists, health consultants. I am one to stay away from "western medicine" unless it's a broken bone or needs stitches.
Please contact the International Chiropractic Pediatric Assn and get a referral to someone who can tell you underlying cause of this= the statistics are clear- each time we put a child on anti biotics we increase the chance they will be on them again-

You need to use a naturopathic approach rather than suppressing his body's immune and cleansing processes with drugs. Supplements that nourish the immune system, colostrum, probiotics, antioxidants, vitamin c, liquid minerals (ionic or fulvic), green superfood powders, etc. Build his health instead of suppressing symptoms - most doctors are taught to treat symptoms and are somewhat ignorant about restoring health. The body can restore health in spite of doctors misguided approaches but you might as well help the body with the resources it needs. This will help reduce allergies as well. Also, I suggest you get him off of refined foods and dairy products at least until he recovers from his congestion.
Do you think it might be croup? Try running a hot shower and keep him in the steamy room for a while to see if that helps his cough. It's best to call the doctor and let them know what is going on just to be on the safe side.
I'm guessing allergies. Do you or anyone in your house smoke. My husband and I used to smoke, but only at night after the kids were asleep. Just a few cigarettes a night and both my kids suffered the worst allergies. So we quit and somehow not seeing my kids in so much discomfort made it easy. Try childrens claritin or zyrtec without any other meds for a few days and see if it stops.
My son - now 6 y/o had all the same problems when he was about 4y/o. He was diagnosed with allergies and given perscription meds. I refused to keep him medicated all the time so after much research I started him on a netti pot. You may have heard of them before. Basically its a rinse for your nose. I bought it at CVS but they sell them at health food stores also. They are more and more popular now. It took a while and lots of bribes with sweet tarts to get him to use it but its been 2 years now and no more infections. He will sometimes come home from school or outdoors playing with a runny nose, but we just do an extra netty that afternoon and it clears right up. He doesnt really get sick anymore - Dr. says the netti rinses it all away and cuts back on flu and colds - we all use it now and get sick much less. Hope this helps for you.
