check out www.allrecipes.com and then make a royale icing. its easy to make and use with different colors and it hardens so its not messy to eat. when your decorating the cookings you can use toothpicks to dip in the frosting and make polka dots on the cookies. and you can do marble effects with the icing as well. i use the royal icing when i do holiday cookies. the kids will have fun with it too. i usually use my fingers or a spoon to spread the icing. its fun to work with.

royale icing
3 eggwhites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tarter
1 (16oz package) powdered sugar sifted
paste food coloring works best

combine egg whites and cream of tarter in large bowl beat on medium until frothy. add half of the powered sugar, mix well. add rest of the sugar beat on high for 5-7 minutes... icing will dry hard fast so keep covered with a damp cloth. if it starts to harden on you just add a little water to it. i'v had times where it took me all day to do cookies cause i did so many and never had problems with the icing harding up on me. i just kept it covered and would add a little water every-now-n-then.

I found the simplest recipe on line the other day. 1 box of yellow cake mix, 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of veg. oil. It was easy and delicious and everyone loved them. I added mini m&m's to mine though. Hope you enjoy, J.

Hi R.! I girl I used to teach with brought in the best frosted sugar cookies I've ever had, so I asked her for the recipe. Here it is:

Preheat oven to 400

3 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup soft butter (melt slightly)
1 egg
1 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract

My friend's recipe just said to mix all of the above ingredients. It worked just fine when I did it, but I know when you make chocolate chip cookies, they say to combine the butter and sugar and vanilla and egg (and milk, in this case) in the mixing bowl, and combine the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt) in a separate bowl, and slowly add in the flour mixture to the mixing bowl. I'm not sure if this makes any difference or not-- I just followed her directions and it worked out fine.

Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 9-11 minutes or until slightly golden around the edges. (Check the first batch because oven temperatures may vary.)

Frosting:

1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup soft butter (melt in microwave about 10 seconds in wrapper or at least until soft but still solid)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. salt
1 lb. confectioners sugar

I hope you like them as much as I do! :) How old are your little pumpkins? Happy Halloween!

If you want to go the homemade route; in my humble opinion my Mom's sugar cookie recipe is the best! They are soft and delicious!

1c white sugar
1c brown sugar
1c shortening
3 eggs
1c buttermilk
1tsp baking soda
3tsp baking powder
1/2tsp salt
1 1/2tsp vanilla
5 1/2c flour

Cream sugar, shortening, and eggs. Add milk, dry ingredients, and vanilla. Knead and roll to 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick. Cut out in desired shapes. Dough will be quite soft. Bake at 375 until lightly browned.

My Mom always used a simple frosting of milk and powdered sugar.

Have fun!
