Continued Follow-up with Employer

Hi ladies! At the end of June, I was laid off of my job at a local non-profit organization. The very next day I interviewed for a different position that I was highly qualified and exposed to from my previous job with the sam organization. In response to my follow-up thank you email, the Executive Director responded to me and said that they have put a temporary hold on hiring for the position I interview for because they have 3 other full time positions being filled so she wants to get those going before this position is hired. She said that she would certainly let me know when they would be ready to fill this position. I'm assuming that means I got it? I didn't get a call saying that I didn't get it. So here is the advice I need: How often should I email/call/send a letter to express continued interest in the job?

What can I do next?

No I wouldn't take it at all that you got the position - it's not open. They may close out the requisition and never hire for that position, or transfer someone internally if and when they ever are ready.

I would keep looking if I were you and if you get another offer, then maybe touch base and see if there is anything new at this company before committing to someone else.

I don't think that means that you got the job at all. She is just stating she will let you know when they ramp back up on hiring for the position. As far as further contact, she did state she would contact you, however if you feel you need to contact her with continued expressed interest, maybe by August you send a follow up communication.

Hi B.,

Unfortunately it does not mean that you got the position, just that they are not going to fill it at this time. You can send them an e-mail asking about the status of the position and when would be a good time to check back in with them as you are still very interested.

Sometimes companies use this as an excuse instead of telling someone they didn't get the job and also sometimes they never do fill the position.

Good luck to you and I hope it works out for you.

I've done a lot of restructuring and hiring where I work, and the situation I can imagine here is that they started hiring for your position, but something happened that put the other 3 on the front burner. They are trying to sort out not only who can fill the positions but if that level of help is going to be enough to go around, or if they need to look at shifting other people in to fill gaps. (been there, done that.) So, no, I would not assume the job is no longer available. I also would not assume you got the job. Sounds like they had barely started interviewing for it.

Considering it takes a good month to fill an average position, I wouldn't panic yet. She did say she would get back to you when it was time to hire again. I would wait at least 6 weeks, maybe 8, to contact her. And keep it brief. "Hi, just following up on our email from 2 months ago, hope your search is going well. If the position I interviewed with is still available, I am still quite interested in being considered for it."

Waiting the 6-8 weeks to get back to her will prevent you from looking like a stalker, will remind her of your existance, and finally demonstrate initiative to her. Good luck!

I would assume they're NOT hiring for that position right now.
I'd follow up in O. month.

From what you wrote I wouldn't assume you have the job. It sounds like they're not ready to fill the position and when they are then maybe they'll call you, who knows if that would be to start or for another interview or what. I wouldn't hold out for this one, but I would keep looking and if it works out then it does. Maybe check back in a couple of weeks? Good luck!

Unfortunately, no you don't have the job. You did not receive an offer. She was just giving you additional information. Sounds like they had just started the interviewing process. I would continue my search, but check in every three to four weeks depending on their response. If they continue to give you vague answers, I would say they either aren't going to hire you or aren't going to hire anyone.

I would send a follow up e-mail today or tomorrow asking if there is a time frame. You may never hear again from them.

No you didn't get it, you have it when it is offered.

If I were you I would send an email replying asking if there is a time frame involved and go from there.

I agree with the waiting a month. I also agree that you weren't given the position, you're just still in the running. I would continue to look for other options.

I wouldn't assume anything. What she said (unless I am reading this incorrectly) is that they are doing NOTHING with this position until the others are sorted out.

Do you still have friends/contacts there? If so, I would reach out to one person and ask them to let you know when the 3 positions are filled. When you get the phone call/email that the other positions are filled, I would email the person who interviewed you and inquire. In the mean time, continue applying elsewhere. They may have a long-term "temporary hold" and you don't want to miss out on another opportunity!

I'm with Debra B sort of - not convinced they have saved the spot for you - but they have lots of stuff going on, it's vacation time of year so it's hard to get all the decision makers in a room at the same time, etc. But I don't think I'd wait 6-8 weeks for follow up. An email every 2 - 3 weeks as long as it's brief is OK. Do one email 2 weeks and a couple of days later, then 3 weeks for the next one. Debra B's phrase for the email is perfect. Good luck mama!

I would not assume for a second that you got he job. Continue on with your job search as if you got a no on this job. I would follow up monthly. If you get something in the interim....take it.

No, you don't have the job. You MIGHT be the favorite for it, when they reconsider the hiring process. Wait 6-8 weeks to contact them.

I don't think you got the job, unfortunately. Sounds like they were premature is posting the position & she was being nice & letting you know what was going on. I wouldn't hound her with follow ups. I agree about waiting a month or so before following up. I also would continue to look for jobs elsewhere. A while ago there was a job that I totally thought I had & was told the same thing, and it ended up being a huge waste of my time.
