I have a 7 month old-first child. The last couple days, she has seem real constipated. You can see if i her eyes that she is hurting. She cries at times too. I was planning on buy some baby food (prunes) and some juice. But any other ideas would be great. Thanks!

Pears! They really work. Also kiwi fruit - sounds weird, but boy does it get the juices flowing. Baby food prunes works pretty well too. Never really tried juice, as some juice can make it worse. Seriously though, pears work awesome!
We've had the same issue with our 15 month old son. We switched from rice to oatmeal cereal when he first started eating solids, the stage 1 prunes (even at his age now) and lots of water. I notice a difference if we slack off and don't make sure he gets enough of these. If the prunes are too strong out of the container, just mix some with the oatmeal cereal. Try to avoid rice cereal and bananas, they will just bind her up.
I would definitely push your foods that are great for digestive health. Apples, strawberries - foods full in fiber. Avoid grapes and bananas during constipation as they will hinder your progress. If it gets serious enough, visit your family physician. My oldest had this problem a couple of times. We just stayed patient and made sure to give her lots of fiber foods and avoided those that tended to make the problem worse. I did have to take her to the ER once and they gave her a laxative. I don't like to give laxatives unless absolutely necessary. Just make sure she is getting enough water as well. Constipiation is sometimes due to not enough hydration. Hang in there. Constipated children are in a lot of pain and it breaks a mom's heart to watch her baby in pain.
If you get desperate, I think "Glyceran" suppositories are a non-drug method to help constipation. I have a friend with a child that is always at risk for impacted bowels and she does a drug-free enema for her son. It is simply a drop of dish soap mixed with plenty of water and inserted into the rectum with a syringe. Not a fun task, but works instantly. It's safe and will not cause illness or side affects. BUT ASK YOUR DR. first before resorting to those methods. As I said, my friend's child is at risk for impacted bowels. I would just try fiber-filled foods and then ask the dr.
our daughter was always constipated. We did either 1/2 prune juice 1/2 formula bottles. We did go to the dr. and they gave us some medicine... which was TERRIBLE, I forgot what it was, but it made her throw up alot and she could keep food down... she was maybe like 3 months old.
Then they sugested suppositories. There are baby ones (or kid?) but we just cut them in 1/2, those seemed to work really good, and didn't make her sick or in any pain at all. Good luck. :)
Let her suck on a graham cracker. They are soft enough that they don't choke on them and it really works well on giving them fiber. Also give her a bottle of water each day. In the water isle there is a gallon jug of Nursery water that is made for babies.
When my daughter gets constipated (usually after a couple of feedings of bananas) I give her prunes, which she really does like. It seems as if within 24-36 hours she is having an easier time. Good luck!
Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? Is she eating solids?
Sometimes babies react to their formula around 6-9mos, and it makes them constipated. Cows milk formula is hard to digest and babies can someties have a problem digesting it.
If she is eating solids, avoid rice cereal. RIce is a binder and its VERY constipating, and really has no nutritional value so its not necessary. If you would like ot feed baby cereal, switch to oatmeal. Its easier to digest and it won't bind her up.
I know when my DD was constipated her doc told me to do what you're doing, give her prunes,or prune juice, and to make sure to offer her water in a bottle, to make sure she was properly hydrated. He also recommended I give her a probiotic as well. You can get it in a powder form, and mix it in with her food. If worse comes to worst, there are baby laxatives you can give her. You can get them at target.

Congratuations on your baby! I, too had babies who had a tendency to get constipated. Have you ever thought about chiropractic care for your baby? Chiropractic is a wonderful, safe, drug-free way to treat many childhood conditions. I work at a chiropractic clinic where the doctor is board certified to treat infants and children. I could get you in for a free consultation. Send me an e-mail message if you would like more information. They are located in St. Louis Park. Thanks and good luck with your little one!
Stop by Terry Naturally (off of GV) They are very knowledgable there! I use a probiotic powder and put a little in one bottle a day for my son. works great!
We add 1 TBS of pear juice to each of my son's bottles, and this helps prevent constipation. You can just try giving her an ounce or two of straight pear (or prune) juice a day, too.
Prunes and the juice is good. very warm bath may help.
Good luck!
pumping a childs thighs/legs, like they are riding a bike helps and also using your fingers to trace a circle clockwise around their bellybutton will help motility.
I heard a brand-new-to-me "prescription" on this with my last baby. I was in contact with an ayurvedic practitioner because of a multitude of problems with me and baby. But for constipation she says put a little ghee (it's clarified butter--I don't know if you would have any or if another fat like butter or olive oil would do the trick) on whatever she is sucking (pacifier, bottle nipple, your nipple). She will ingest a little and a little is all it takes to do the trick.
I saw that you already got a lot of other good suggestions, but thought I would add what our pediatritian said as well. My son is also 7 months and constipated as well. This is our third and I have tried everything that I did with the others. What works for some babies doesn't work for others, so I have found that we have had to experiment a little. Our pediatritian said that if it has been a few days and he was clearly in pain to give him a glycerin supository. I know I spelled that wrong. They aren't expensive and are by the pharmacy. She said that if there is a plug of poop that even the prunes and pears might not help until the plug comes out. Mangos are another fruit with a lot of fiber. Good luck!
AWWW!!! Watching your child in pain is so hard!!! My Daughter suffered with constipation as an infant and we were told any juice that starts with a "P" for poop. My daughter loved pear juice and it worked great!!! We only needed 3 oz a day and it did the trick; I was was amazed.
I found out that the biggest constipating foods are rice cereal, bananas, and carrots (read on a baby website). I gave my daughter prunes, and juice and also did bicycle legs with her. That last one always helped both my kids, just gets things loosed up down there. Good luck.
hi S.
when my children where constipated I would but one Tablspoon of dark karo syurp in there bottle for a couple of days and that seemed to make it easier to go.
It's easy for little ones to get constipated since apples, bananas, and rice cereal are 'first foods' and yet they are terribly binding foods at that! If your baby eats rice cereal, consider switching to multi-grain or oatmeal baby cereal. My first daughter struggled with constipation - she drank watered down prune juice. Once she had other kinds of juice, I did 1 part prune, 1 part water, 1 part other flavored juice. (I don't like juice for kids because of the sugar content, so i still water down their juice) My DD is now 3 1/2 and I still use a powdered probiotic every morning for her - it's a little tiny tub of stuff I buy from the natural food section of our grocery store. I use it every day, just a teeny tiny scoop that I mix in some water, then add her juice to it and she goes! If I skip a day, it takes sometimes 3 days for her to catch back up, so we ALWAYS have it on hand in our cupboards!!!! Good luck!
Try some gripe water! Use it with a little warm water in a bottle & she'll push that thing right out in couple hrs. But kinda help her though. When my son was constipated, I spread his cheeks while he pushed & that helped a lot. Good luck
You can put a some Dark Karo syrup in her drink or I beleive you could give her Milk of Magnesia
beleive it or not, corn syrup really helps with that. i hated giving to my daughter, but it was only off and off for a few months. you'd have to check with your dr. on the dosage, but it's a great way to relax their bowels gently & help them go. I know that's tough! Tummy massages helped too. God bless !
