Hi. Something to think about is dairy can cause severe constipation in some people. I have 6 children, one of which could not tolerate cows milk until he was past preschool age. He is 15 now and can eat dairy, however; he doesn't like milk. Hmmmmm

My oldest had lots of problems with that as a baby. I always gave her pear juice to keep her regular and if she still had a problem than I would have to resort to glycerin suppositories. The best brand is Fleet and they have them for infants. The pear juice usually worked and tastes better then prune juice.

Prunes are great for constipation. You can buy them in baby food jars. A good rule of thumb is any fruit with a "p" in the name-apples, peaches, pears, prunes are all good for constipation. Bananas are good for diarreah.

How about the little baby food jars of prunes (maybe mix it with some applesauce if it doesn't taste too good. Also, our pediatrician said apple juice (not watered down) works as well.

My three year old has often suffered from constipation. My doctor suggested adding a bit of Light Karo syrup (corn syrup) to my daughter's bottle on occasion. I apparently draws water to the digestive tract. Worked like a charm, although she did have loose poops. Good Luck.

Apple Juice - 4 oz, then water to make a full bottle. Don't do more than 8oz of apple jice in a day or you will have a mess to clean. :)

If the baby is formula fed it's probably just because of the iron in the formula, if not it's still really normal and there are few things you can do. First, you can offer prune or apple juice. With a baby that young, you'll probably need to dilute it. Second, serve it warm or give baby warm water (not too hot-- make sure you test the temp before serving it). Just like with adults, warm beverages get little bowels moving. Third, get baby moving. Lay him/her (sorry, couldn't tell from the post) on his/her back and move his/her legs "knees to stomach" repetitively. You can can to both at the same time (i.e. roll him/her into a ball) or alternate (like he/she is running). Hope this helps!

My son had cronic constipation when he was smaller. Our peditrician told us to give him a mixture of 1/2 apple-prune juice and 1/2 water daily. It is hard to say how much, you just need to start with 2 ounces for a few days and see if there is any improvement and increase the amount if needed.

I hope this helps.

Little Tummy's makes a great laxative. It's in the laxative section at Walmart. It's safe for an 8 month old to take. It tastes awful, so you'll want to mix it with O.j. or something to drown out the taste. If that fails, the pharmacist at walgreens can give you a medication that is like Colace, but for babies. You don't need a perscription for it, just ask him. Plain old applesauce may do the trick as well. Good luck!

This is gonna sound crazy, but my mom did it with me and had my do it with my son and worked! Put like a spoon of Karo light corn syrup in with the baby's formula. Its some thing about the sugar I think. I thought it was crazy, but she told me that my Dr. used to have her do it and it always worked. You can also do apple juice or prunes, that works great for my son.

My daughter gets the same way and prune juice with NO pulp and NOT from concentrate mixed with distilled water works great! We tried lots of stuff and that worked the best. We would give her 2-3 bottles a day depending on how well she was pooping. You mix 1 and 1/2 oz prune juice with 1 and 1/2 oz water. Also, eating baby food prunes helps a lot too. Stay away from the foods that don't help constipation like applesauce, bannanas, rice cereal. Our doctor said pretty much all the lighter colored ones like apples. He also said oatmeal and pears helps bowel movements too. Just try the prune juice or food, but the juice is better I think. Keep an eye on their bowels, if they are getting to runny then don't give them as much. Just take it slow with 1 maybe 2 bottles and if you think they need another after it's been a day or two of trying then try 3 bottles but deffinatly no more cause baby's should only be getting 6 oz max of juice a day. Like I said we ended up giving our baby 2 sometimes 3 bottles of prune juice a day and it helped a ton. According to my research baby's of that age can have 4-6 oz of juice and it's not bad for them actually it's good. Now our girl is almost 9 months and we slowly changed her from Isomil to normal Similac and only 1 bottle of prune juice a day and she poops a lot better. Also, remember formula feed baby's don't always have a lot of bowel movements. As long as it hasn't been like 4-5 days. But our doctor told us different juices like pear and apple and they didn't work so we finally did prune cause so many people said it worked good and it got so much better. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi E.,
My 8 month old is going through the same issue. I stopped nursing 2 months ago and that is when it all started.
Anyway, we have tried a few things an it has helped. Stopped Rice Cereal, Applesause, Bananas and Sweet Potatoes, apparently all constipating foods. Started giving him some Apple juice and even mixing his formula with Apple Juice. Not sure why Apple Juice worksa nd Applesauce does not. Also pear juice or even prune juice. We also increased his water intake and his green vegetables. These all worked. We also used a Infant Glycerin suppository once and it worked as well (Quick solutino, but not good to use too often).

Hope it helps.
Best regards,
D.

When my daughter was constipated around that age I gave her prune juice and jarred pears. My doc told me that should clear it up in a day or two. If you haven't started your child on juice or jarred foods yet, it's ok to still give prune juice.
But my doctor also said do not give any enema's or sepositories, they will become dependent on those to go to the bathroom and have problems later on.
Good Luck!

My daughter has been fighting constipation for almost 2 years now. (she turned 2 in July) Her doctor put her Miralax which softens her stools and if we skip a day she is constipated again. Some things that I have found helpful is an infant suposatory (not sure on the spelling) and just waiting. Other things that have helped not loosen, but gets the bowels moving again are taking her temp rectally and giving her as much fiber as possible. Give her lots of water (if you give her water yet)cause this will help wash her system out. I have even gone and put 1 tablespoon of dark karo syrup in her formula (or put breastmilk in a bottle, if you are breastfeeding her). I will warn you when the kiddo finally has to go, he/she will scream and you may have to help it along by pushing down on the stomach or you will have a big blow out. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.

Hi E.--My son started experiencing a lot of constipation around that age, and mandarin oranges work wonders for that problem! You might check with your dr. before you give oranges to your baby, because I know some dr.'s advise waiting until a year before giving citrus fruit, but I was advised to try the oranges by a nurse at the dr.'s office I take him to. Cut up the slices into little pieces and she should be able to mash them up with her gums. I just buy the canned mandarin oranges. I still give them to him everyday to keep him regular. Hope this helps--good luck! I know it's a miserable situation for both of you!

If you're reluctant to give processed corn syrup or sugar from fruit juice to your baby, there's a good homeopathic remedy to try that worked for my eight month old breastfed baby. It's called Alumina. In town, you can go to the Herb Store in Nob Hill and look for the liquid remedy called Indigestion. I'm not sure where else carries it, but it's produced by a local source. It's worked great for us and for a few others.

Hi E.,
I have two daughters, ages 5 and 8. When they were babies and got constipated our Pediatrician told me to use Karo Syrup. I would start by putting about a teaspoon in to a warm bottle of milk. Usually by the end of the day they had had a normal bowel movement. If they hadn't, I'd add another teaspoon to an evening bottle. This always helped them right a way. Good luck.

All great suggestions but on another note to prevent further constipation if the child is formula fed you should try switching formulas. Constipation can have to do with food sensitivities. Try a non dairy formula. Look for a baby probiotic supplement which can be helpful for constipation especially important for infants who have been on antibiotics.
