Constipation - Ocoee, FL

My son is now 13 months old and still has constipation problems. What the Dr. has told me is to give him juice and water and stay away from constipating food. So I give him prune juice mixed with water and some days actual prunes. Also ocassionally give him other juices. But it doesn't really seem to help. I'd love any suggestions anyone else might have that has helped you.

What can I do next?

My DD hasn't had constipation problems for quite awhile, but her ped. suggested the Karo syrup, pear or prune juice. It worked! Since then, I buy stage 2 Gerber prunes and applesauce and give her about 1/2 container with her breakfast each day. (It's worked at keeping her stools softer and easier for her to pass so far.) DD is almost a year old. I know the prune thing may not last much longer because soon she won't want to eat babyfood anymore, but it might be something you could try.
Good luck.

I had the same issue with my baby girl when she was 5 months. I also saw a pediatric gastro doctor and he recommended Fletchers Castoria (dark liquid). You can get it at Walgreens. You just add a little to a drink consistantly and it works. My daughter is now 20 months and still has a slight constipation issue, but now I just give her prune just in the morning with a little bit of water and it balances her system out.

Hi B. blieve it or not some times what work for others might not work for you. The first thing I'd do is stop givivng him the prunes. You know what prunes constipate me, so he might be the same way. Go to the nearest health food store in my area and get something that's not going to be to harsh for his little system. Because it could be something thats in his every day diet thats causing the problem. I've trained my body not to eat heavy meats like steak and other beef products, so when I parttake of these items my body speaks to me like. whats up, and it puts me on lock down for a couple of days. I'm also learning that there are certain blood types that can only eat certain foods. It might not hurt, sense you do have the time, do a little research on the child blood type and see what foods are a no no for him. I believe this is going to help a whole lot. Not to mention he is worth it Just think about how we feel when we can't go.Go to the web-site on blood types. Just put those words in. Bloodtypesanddiet.com

Hey B.,
My daughter saw a pediatric gastro Dr. He said told me to feed fruits that start with P...
Prunes, pears, plums. Also increase the fiber in his diet. ( Applesauce, Whole Wheat toast etc) Raisins are good too if your baby is eating them yet. Also, Did you just switch to Whole milk after 1 year old? The milk can make constipation also at first. Goat milk (Available at publix,And tastes good) is easier to digest.
Hope this helps,
K.

Hi, B.
The same thing happened to my son, we tried prune juice changing his diet and I was also told that Karo syrup mixed in a bottle will help, but still he was very irregular. Eventually he out grew it.

My son is a bit younger than yours (5 months). My doctor advised me to use Colace liquid. The pharmacy had it behind the counter. It has a horrible taste, needs to be mixed in his milk or formula. It works wonders for Connor. Our problem was very hard stool. The Colace is a stool softener/laxative. Also after four days of no stools I use a supository.

I hope this helps!

My son has Downs Syndrome and he has a problem with constipation also. My dr. told me to give him Milk of Magnesia. I think its a tsp, twice a day, and you will have to figure out your own measuring for your baby, and whats best for him. Also, if he is really haveing a tough time of it, to help them go easier is FLEET enema glycerin suppositories, you can get from Walmart. But the important thing is you cant rely on this to help them go all the time.
Please check with your Dr. to see if this may help you out at all first before doing these things. You can probaly talk to the nurse and she can consult you.
Hope that helps a little, oh and also, stay away from cheese, that will bind them up to.
Try Brocolli, corn, tapioca pudding, things with FIBER.

I had the same problem with my daughter around that age and we switched her to soy milk and it cleared the constipation right up. She stopped having to take the soy milk around 16 months and hasn't had any constipation problems since.

I had the same problem with my son over 20 years ago. Once a poopy rolled out of his diaper and it sounded like a rock hitting the floor. Is he on cow's milk yet? My son was and what I had to do was cut back the amount of fat in the milk; first 2% then 1%. I also used infant glycern suppositories, added karo syrup to his milk, and gave him apple juice when needed.

I agree with Nada....gylcerin suppositories are safe and work very quickly. You need to watch your child's diet. Some kids are lactose intolerant. Sometimes just trying different milks or milk products can fix the problem Remember there is milk in a lot of different things i.e. ice cream, mac & cheese, and dairy products. Good luck and God bless.

My daughter, who turns 3 in a few weeks, also had a bad problem with constipation. Since she isn't really a juice drinker, that didn't help. The doctor gave me a prescription for Lactulose. It is a sugary syrup and it certainly does help. I started off by giving it to her every night. Now, she rarely needs it. It is great. Talk to your doctor about it. It may help out your son.

My son had similiar problems when he was little. Our pediatrician recommended glycerin suppositories. Fleet brand makes ones that Walgreens and CVS carry OTC. I don't think there were specific children's ones, we just used 1/4 - 1/2 of the suppository. The results were quick and seemed to help a lot. We did this every so often when it had been several days since his last BM. He's almost 2 now and has outgrown it and goes by himself regularly now. It might be worth asking your ped. or pharm. about it. Good luck!
