Constipated 7 Month Old

Hi! My son is just about 7 months old. We started "real" food on his 6 month birthday so he's been eating stage 1 foods once a day for about 5 weeks now. He hasn't had a BM in 4 days and I'm getting a little worried. He won't drink any juice and I've given him tummy and butt massages too. I heard it's nothing to worry about in breastfed babies but I'm no longer exclusively breastfeeding anymore so I don't know what to do. He's seems extra cranky lately and I'm not surprised. If it were me I'd be unhappy too. Any advice on how to ease his discomfort? Thanks in advance..

What can I do next?

What i have done in the past is give more water and applesauce and if you can sneak it in some vitamin E or codliver oil they really work.

Try using a tsp of Karo syrup when you give him formula or if you can get him to take juice. Apple juice also helps promote BMs. Hope this helps.

Try giving him either baby prunes or baby prune juice.

The Karo syrup thing works! My doc says it need to be the clear kind. It's very gentle for the baby- no painful explosions and it is a natural product with no other side effects.

I have 5 kids of my own, I've seen, been and experianced alot!
I also take care of infants upto 2yrs old and have been doing this exclusivly for the past 6 years. This is something I have some experiance with, I can offer a couple of things...
Try somehow, to offer a mixture of pear juice and or prune juice & water (a 50/50 mix) to him when it is bottle time. Giving him 4-6oz 2x a day should get things rolling along. You would give him the "juice bottle" first when it is time for the bottle, then finish with the regular formula with of course less than usual. You should keep this up for 3 or four days, but I've seen and my parents have seen results pretty fast, usually with-in a day or 2. If nothing happens after this than contact your physician. Don't be surprised if an enema is perscribed or given. Seems extreme, but sometimes it is necessary to start things up.
#2. You should also look at some things your doing day to day.
Consider the formula. Sometimes the brand may not be right for your child and also look at the iron level. If there is added iron than this could be binding up your son, so if this is the case, switch formula brands.
Another thing to consider is when you say your on stage one foods, does this mean simple to digest fruits and vegetables?
You need to keep in mind that too many dark green leavy vegetables will constipate anyone. Please make sure that you are including 2 fruits everyday, especially on the days when you offer spinich and broccoli, kale, or any dark green leavy vegetable (which is not a starter food or stage one foods)
Make sure that he gets enough plain water everyday too. After you "get things rolling", slowly wheen off the fruit juice added to the water, but keep water a part of the liquid intake. Making sure he includes deliciouse plain water instead of juices or Koolaid type drinks will help teach him good eatting habbits and benifit him in the long run.
Hope this helps, good luck!

When this happened to our daughter, we gave her apple juice and stage 1 prunes. We were about to buy real prunes and grind it up, but then we saw the stage 1 or 2 prunes with the baby food. We still had to help her a little bit. When it looked like she was pooping, we would lay her down and take her diaper off and spread her little cheeks and message her abdomen. What parents would do for their little ones:)

My son's pediatrician recommended 1 tsp of Karo syrup or 1 oz of prune juice in the bottle (mixed with formula/breastmilk). You could always try feeding him prunes.

check with your pediatrician, but it's fairly common when they first start eating solids. We were told to get the children's glycerine suppositories, cut them in half lengthwise (i usually cut a little bit off the length, too), and use one of those. You will probably have to hold his butt cheeks closed for about 10 minutes, and it can be messy, and he may cry for those 10 minutes, but it's well worth it.

Hi,
I have found at the recommendation of my peds. pear jiuce or jarred pears work great for constipation! If you can get him to drink the juice make it warm, the warm liquid will also help with the constipation. Good luck!

A.,

If he won't drink the juice yet (I have heard that a lot of babies are very specific abt what they get in their bottles), try to give him higher fiber foods. As you introduce new foods, make the next one applesauce or prunes. You couldn't pay me enough to eat the prunes, but she would eat them all the time...Both very high fiber and helpful with constipation. When my daughter started on cereal, her bowels became like concrete, and this helped. Good luck.
