Confused About Back Problem Diagnosis

I have suffered from daily leg and foot pain for at least 10 years. Two years ago I had an MRI of my spine and the Dr. (a back Dr.) told me that nothing was wrong that could be causing my legs to hurt. I decided to go to a Chiropractor to see if maybe it is the way that I stand or walk that hurts them. He looked at my previous MRI and said "I hate to tell you this but that Dr. was wrong, you do have a problem with the disc next to the scaitic nerve". He showed me the difference between the other discs and that "problem" one and it looked completely different from the others. I am so cofused. Could a back specialist really have been completely wrong. The Chiropractor told me he could help me and that I need to be optimistic about it. I just don't know whether to get a third opinion or what. I don't want to spend a ton of money with a chiropractor unless something really is wrong. When I read online about problems with the Sciatic nerve it says that there is usually back pain and or buttock pain as well. I don't have either of those problems. I appreicate your advice.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone that made me feel much better about going to the Chiropractor. He thinks that the muscle around my Sciatic nerve got damaged some how and is squeezing the nerve. He asked for me to give him until the middle of June to see if he can correct it. If he is not successful he is sending me to a nerve specialist. At least I know he is not going to drag this on for a long time. I suffer from fatigue and he is doing a hair analysis right now to see if the results come back toxic and if I am defecient in certain vitamins and minerals. I really like this Dr. He is in Bulverde. He is very conservative and doesn't push anything on you. His name is Jason Hahn.

Hi K.-

A third opinion can't hurt, so you might as well try. But I did want to tell you that my husband suffered with back pain for years. He had tried just about ever medical option and was close to having surgery done when he finally tried a chiropractor. He has been basically pain free ever since. If he overdoes it on the weekends with yard work or rough housing with the kids he'll feel it, but it's not the constant pain that he was in before.

Good luck,
K.

With 2 different diagnosis go for a third. Mention you have already been told two different things and need to find out exactly what is going on. Just go in and tell your symptoms. Once this Dr. gives you the diagnosis, you can decide which Dr. you want to continue with or you may need to have another opinion if it is totally different.. This is your body and your health. Be strong and determined to be treated with the best care.

It doesnt hurt to get a second opinion...But i can tell you my daughter who just turned 15 was diagnosed with on set of scholiosis(sp) and her doctor was waiting a little bit to do anything---I went to a chiropracter with her because she was having back pain and he did another complete set of x-rays and he measured everything and it turns out her femur bone is 2" sorter in one leg and it causes her to stand un-even. I then took these exrays to another Dr. and he confirmed what the chiropracter diagnosed. No scholiosis! I was quite upset with origional Dr. and he wouldnt take our phone calls.
Anyways the Chiropracter adjusts her every other week and has put her in a lift--when I can get her to wear other shoes than flip flopps...She no longer has back pain and is not looking at a cripling disease.

I have sciatica as well, I went to a back doctor AND a neurologist. The back doctor told me nothing was wrong and the neurologist told me the problems I was having he normally treats in people that are at least 60 years old. The options he gave me were either a nerve medicine that would make me fat (I'm 22.. no way!) or narcotic pain medicine. Neither of those were acceptable solutions to me. I got pregnant and the problem got worse and FINALLY decided to go to a chiropractor. It was the best decision I ever made, I felt instant relief and while it will take a little while to retrain your body to be in alignment it's the best thing ever when you realize, gosh my hips (or legs, or whatever) don't hurt! Everyone experiences sciatica different ways, give the chiropractor a shot it'll be the best decision you'll ever make!

Listen to the Chiropractor - his specialty is the spine! His job is to manipulate and make you better without surgery or medication! Plus, they are way cheaper than surgery, which is what most Back MD's specialize in.

I have sciatica and have been going to the same Chiropractor for 15 years (www.drjunkin.com). He keeps my spine in shape and my flat feet leveled (with foot levelers)!

I don't think the specialist was "wrong," his eyes just weren't trained to see what the D.C.'s eyes were.

Good luck and if you need a Chiropractor that you can trust, go see Dr. Junkin (www.drjunkin.com).

Blessings:)

MDs that specialize in the back are not trained to look for the connection between nerve impingement and the pain it causes. A MRI would not show nerve impingement either.

Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to look for these.

It's funny that you associate chiropractors with the worst case when they are the least invasive -and least expensive. Consider: the LOWEST malpractice insurance rates are for Chiropractors.

The Chiropractor that told you to be optimistic knows that mental attitude is also important for healing. If that Chiropractor wasn't able to conclusively address your concerns, I suggest you get a free consult with another one. You should feel comfortable that all your questions have been addressed.

I was having horrible chronic headaches that no MRI, or med doc could find the cause for. I ended up in a chiropractor's office for something unrelated and the chiropractor, after reading my scans, looked at me and said, "your c1 and c2 vertebrae aren't aligned properly. This often manifests itself in frequent, severe headaches. Do you have anything like that?". Needless to say, I stayed under his care and am completely headache free. My inclination is to trust the chiropractor. He found the problem and says he can fix it. I like him better than the back specialist who couldn't find anything wrong.
