Why is it that after my hard drive crashed, my husband put in a new drive with 3 x the storage capacity, yet it runs slower? Is it just me or does it seem like computers get slower as the age?

Because your hard drive has nothing to do with the speed of your computer, if anything a bigger hard drive makes your computer slow down because now the processor is having to cover more area, or your processor is so old it doesn't know how to deal with the new hard drive.

Computers do get slower as they age which is why you keep seeing faster and faster processors with higher and higher ram.

Each upgrade to a program, a browser, is made with the latest and greatest in mind. It has new abilities that need more speed just to run at the same level.

Add some ram, see if that helps, if not it is your processor and it is cheaper to buy a new computer than upgrade a processor.

Ditto what Gracie said. Although a dying or full hard drive can cause a problem, the speed capabilities come from the processor and the RAM.

Added: To those suggesting she defrag or clean up her hard drive, she stated that she has a brand new drive. That means that it does not need defragmenting or any similar maintenance.

Sounds like it could be a few things. One...your internet connection and modem. Is it running well and actually connecting to the internet with good speed? Wi-Fi is the worst. Those connections always tend to be kind of troublesome unless you have a stellar connection.
Two....you may need a de- frag to clean out the whole computer. Usually excess junk and viruses are what slow computers down the most. You might want to run this and scan for viruses to see what is bogging you down. spyware, Malware, and the infamous Trojan Horses and wormholes are culprits in really dogging a computer. We find this junk all the time everytime we run a huge virus scan and do a de-frag. My husband usually does a clean up and clean out every six months on our whole home network to keep things running up to speed.

computers ABSOLUTELY get slower as they age. It's the nature of the beast.

You add programs, you add apps, you download information, your computer gets fuller and so it has to work harder to accomplish the same thing it did before you took 1,000 pics on your vacation and got that cool app to edit them etc etc etc.

When was the last time you cleaned up your computer? The same way you do with your car? There are updates that are needed, you can de-fragment, you can delete programs and apps you no longer use. You should be running security scans to make sure you don't have viruses or bots.

If you don't know what I'm talking about..... it's the same as you driving a car but not knowing that it needs gas, oil changes, topped off on fluids, radiator flushed etc.

If you don't know how to do upkeep on your computer yourself... take it to the geek squad at Best Buy. They can do regular maintenance on your computer.

If you got a new hard drive that means a new install of your OS. You need to make sure to reinstall all the correct drivers especially motherboard drivers. You should check your PC manufacturers support page for downloads.
When you're all done installing drivers and your programs defrag the drive.
