You'll be so happy you did cloth diapers... don't listen to anyone who tries to dissuade you. We use prefolds, fuzzi buns and bum genius. I would say if you are going exclusively with one type, use the bum genius- for a number of reasons. They are one size fits all, whereas fuzzi buns come in sm, med, large and you have to buy more when they grow out of the smaller size.
The small fuzzi buns worked great, but for some reason when we moved to the medium size the inner wicking side (the fuzzy part) is harder to keep tucked in and the pee ends up being wicked onto our baby's clothes.
The bum genious are also as easy to use as disposables- just velcro on and off. Provided that you've put the inserts in before hand, your husband and relatives shouldn't object to using them. You'll just need a travel bag for them to toss the dirty diapers into.
You are right that the pre-folds don't contain as well when they are small (especially if he is a breast-fed baby), but when my baby started eating solids and the poop got firmer then I started prefering the simplicity of pre-folds (simpler laundry-wise). We use chinese prefolds, but I hear they have bamboo ones now. We got our items from a local company- diapersafari.com- the owner, Bettina, was super helpful.
PS: If you don't have a utility sink I would invest in a hose that you can attach to your toilet for pre-rinsing the diaper. I use a large plastic plant pot with the bottom cut-out to help contain the spray - just clothspin the diaper to the rim of the pot, stick in the toilet bowl and rinse away.

I use fuzzi Bunz for my daughter who is 2 1/2 yrs old. I love them. I use only tide detergent, white vinegar, and one cup of baking soda, which you can buy the 12lbs bag at Sams, Costco, or BJs. If you daughter gets yeast infection or diaper rashes often I would switch to fuzzi bunz pocket diapers. The pocket diapers for the older one b/c you can put 2 liners in if she is a heavy wetter. My mother-in-law used the cloth diapers while I was visiting my husband in CA and she said that they were the easiest to use. I have used the hemp and terry cloth. I prefer the terry cloth inserts. When you call Amy at Wee Bunz she has a lot of info and very informative. She even helped me with potty training my 2yr old daughter. I have not heard anything on the AIO's, sorry. I hope this helps! I've used my FB for over a year now. While I love them, I had 2 small problems with them. 1 I had to move up a size within 2 months, but I was able to sell my slightly used FB for about 13 each, so it wasn't a great loss. 2 when DS was very young the FB did not keep the BF poo in the diaper. We did have emergency clothing changes while out a few times. I started using prefolds or fitteds and a thirsties cover. I liked the THirsties style covers b/c they offer real gussets to hold everything in. Plus with a cover you can reuse the cover over and over. If I had it to do again I'd probably do prefolds with covers in the early days, up to about 2 or 3 months, then switch to pockets. Or use the pockets just to go out. Of course now I make my own alot, so it's not as hard for me to switch sizes, but I probably wouldn't buy smalls again, he just wasn't in them long enough. THe thing to remember about cloth diapers is this: cloth diapering is not about one type of diaper, it's a system. You'll have to play with it a little to see what will work for your child.

for AIOs, i used bumkins, they worked great! as for good prices and huge selection, check out diaperswappers.com . it takes a little looking around to figure it all out, but it is basically a lot of moms that buy cloth diapers, try them out until they find the perfect fit for their little ones. then they sell off the extras for a bit cheaper. some are used, some are brand new, but you learn a lot just shopping around on there@
