Clomid & Twins

That is a very personal decision. How old are you? I know several people
that used clomid and only had one baby. However, that does not mean
that twins cannot happen. Get more info if you can. Only you can make
the decision.

I have a cousin and friend that both took Clomid and both had boy/girl twins (both sets about 2 1/2 years old now). Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Both of the people that I know personally that have taken Clomid had twins. However, I wonder how much of that had to do with the Clomid and how much had to do with their age as the chance of twins increases with maternal age (both were 35).

I tried for over 2 years with my 3rd child and my dr. suggested that I take Clomid - I just wasn't comfortable with the risks of a multiple pregnancy. Especially since twins run in our family and I had lost a set of twins already. If it has only been a few months since your loss, perhaps you could hold off a little longer before trying any medical intervention? However, if you feel the time is right and are able to handle a pregnancy of multiples (it could be more than twins, too), then go for it. I was already high-risk and the chance of adding the danger of a multiple birth (for my body) would have been too great.

I took Clomid for 3 months with no luck. But the month after I stopped taking them I got pregnant with my daughter who is now almost 3. The chance of twins is very slim, but it CAN happen. I wasn't too worried about it when I was on it. Good luck! So sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

My good friend just finished a round of clomid, and it ended with her pregnant with a single baby. However, the chance of multiple births is higher than average on this drug. If you're uncertain, why don't you go ahead and tell your doctor you want to hold off on the clomid for a couple of months. If you still can't conceive in 6 months or so, you can always try the clomid then! There isn't any rush unless you're well over 35 and concerned that you might not have much time left.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. When we were trying to get pregnant, I went for my regular yearly checkup. I mentioned that we were trying and the ovulation kits kept saying I was continually ovulating, but there was no result, and my periods were very irregular. He said I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, in which the hormones build up but no egg is released. Apparently, it's common to use Clomid to make a egg release. I had no side effects at all and got pregnant the first time. I had one very healthy baby when I was 35. I would ask your dr. why he thinks you need the Clomid, if it's related somehow to why you miscarried, and maybe get a second opinion if you're concerned. You may just need some time to deal with your loss before you are ready to try again, and when you are ready you may not need the Clomid. As far as worrying about having twins, I think they have to put EVERY possible thing that could happen in those warnings, no matter how slim the chance. I hope everything goes well.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It upsets me that doctors rush to prescribe meds that can have horrible side effects rather than talk to their patients about how the stress of a miscarriage (emotionally and physically) can delay getting pregnant immediately (or not). It is your decision, but I would work on taking care of yourself naturally (getting enough sleep, eating whole healthy foods and staying away from caffeine and alcohol) and if you can, have some fun, relaxing time away with your husband. The exact same thing happened to me with as Bethany...3 cycles of clomid = no baby...The month after I stopped, I conceived my 1st son who is now 2.5..Good luck. I do know of 2 other moms who had twins on Clomid, they also had a history of twins in their family..so who knows if it would have happened outside of the meds as well....but I'm sure in all reality it is a slim chance, ..good luck

The whole purpose of these drugs is not to trigger as many eggs as possible ... but rather to first be precise in timing for fertilization.
You need to know when the egg is ready and will release... so you know when to attempt fertilization.
How do you pinpoint the "right time" for fertilization... if you don't control the growth and release of the egg?
Then, as that control is not enough, Drs. move to the part about more eggs hopefully means more chances for one to fertilize. .. and that's why there is such a disclaimer on the drug.
Stress alone can interfere with pregnancy. I am thinking a little help might reduce your stress.... so why wait.

I took clomid before conceiving both my children and I had single babies both times. (and my husband is a twin).

Clomid very often produces twins, triplets or more. I would suggest relaxing and enjoying the unprotected "practice" for a few more months.

After 3 years of trying my husband and I were offered the Clomid but we were not comfortable with multiples (and they chance of the doctor wanting to do "sellective reduction") We waited on "nature" that was 10 years ago. We have 3 girls!!! Age 9 yo, 3 yo and 11 months old!!!

Give yourself some time to heal both physically, mentally and emotionally. I has a miscarriage between the 3 yo and 11 month old and it took me about a year to "heal" to the point of being physically and mentally stable. That is my "angel baby" and is gone but never forgot. Make sure you know all the risks of Clomid or any other fertility drug and give your self some time. May God Bless you soon with the child of your heart! A.

I naturally conceived two healthy baby boys (now almost 5 and 3). My husband and I tried for almost a year to conceive #3.

I was prescribed one round of Clomid (at lowest dose of 50mg). I had an ultrasound on day 12 of that cycle, which revealed three maturing follicles...two that were right next to each other.

The docs say that the risk of multiples is about 6-8% with the use of Clomid, but there are many factors that can increase this risk. Age, maternal weight, family history/genetics, even previous pregnancies can increase the risk.

That being said, I am 31 years old and currently 14 1/2 weeks pregnant with a healthy singleton. I became pregnant on that first round of Clomid. I conceived naturally (no IUI or IVF), and had been to several acupuncture sessions prior to starting the Clomid. I loved the treatments!!! I went to spa that was connected to a fertility clinic (you do not have to be a patient at the clinic). It was fabulous, and with the combination of acupuncture and Clomid, we achieved our goal :) I'll be returning to the spa for pregnancy massage soon!

i'm sorry for your loss :( only a few months, i would probably give it a bit longer for your body to try itself. It can take a healthy couple 12 months to naturally concieve. Doesn't make it easy, i know the rollercoaster of infertility - we dealt with it for many years.

that being said -- if you chose it, i know at least 3 people who have taken clomid who ended up with singleton babies. There is an increased risk of multiples, but its not very much.
In all my research, i've learned there is no genetic link to identical twins - it is just a random occurrence of the embryo splitting and can happen to anyone regardless of family history. So the percentage from that raises only a fraction of a percent with Clomid.
Fraternal twins run only on the mother's side (because it has to do with how many eggs you release) and that's the kind of twins that is increased by fertility drugs because they often make you release more than one egg.

I used femera which is very similar to clomid, but works different (doesn't bind in the brain like clomid - so less side-effects). It didn't work for me, but i had lots of medical issues that caused my infertility. I have 1 other friend who used Femera successfully and has just one perfect little boy.

And trust me, if you end up with twins, you will survive them and enjoy every second (well, almost every second!). My babies were a result of IVF which raises the chance of twins to 10-20% or so depending who you talk to. As much as i was terrified and overwhelmed after that first ultrasound, you adjust to what life throws you and i wouldnt have it any other way - i love my twins :)

Hi, i have used clomid on 3 of my 5 pregnancys . I have 3 children, and had 2 miscarriages. It took me 7 yrs to concieve my 1st child and clomid helped but i also seen a fertility speacialist and i would recomend that 1st. My regular dr perscibed me clomid and it did not work. When i seen the speacialist they helped me by telling me i needed clomid and glucofage. Thats when it finnally worked. I never had muiltiples. When i took glucafage it helped me keep the pregnancy going. My last pregnancy was not planned and i concieved my littlte girl with no help of any drugs. So keep the faith and do what you feel is in your heart.i love my children and would never regret my choice of using clomid.

If you're not in a huge rush, my personal advice would be to wait. I've done clomid twice; neither time resulted in pregnancy. It increases your chances of pregnancy, but not by a huge amount. I found the side effects really terrible - moody, hot flashes, etc. Not everyone has this, but if you are comfortable waiting, there's no reason that you can't try it in 3 months. Obviously your choice, just wanted to put it out there.

I was prescribed Clomid. My doctor told me that the chance of having twins is 3%, but if you take Clomid it's 6%. I did conceive twins, but they also run in my family so there was already an increased chance due to my genetics. It really does not increase the chances of multiples that much, so I wouldn't worry. I know of only one other person with twins that conceived them while on Clomid, and they also run in her family. Most moms of twins I'm friends with (which is A LOT) conceived their twins with more intense fertility treatments. Good luck to you!
