Cleaning up After Little Boys in the Bathroom

My 3 year-old son seems to have a lot of "accidents" in the bathroom when he is going pee-pee and it gets on the tile floor. I feel like I am constantly cleaning his bathroom, yet it still smells like urine. Has anyone found a great cleaner that really gets rid of smell???

What can I do next?

I use the Clorox Wipes. I just keep a container of them on the back of the toilet and wipe up with them at least once a day. Seems to do the trick for us.

I agree with Tracy. Solumel, is AMAZING! It is completly safe for your home as it has no harsh chemicals, and it will totally eliminate odors and stains.

As for getting his aim better, I have heard of the cherrios thing. I never did it with my son. I had my hubby actually show him how to aim, and made my hubby let our son watch him use the potty. My hubby was not too kean on the idea, but we have not had a problem since.

Hope that helps.

I had to laugh when I read your post because I'm having the same issue with my 3 1/2 year old. I thought wiping down the normal spots would do it, until I walked into the bathroom while he was peeing and he literally turned around mid-stream to talk to me. He soaked the carpet, the wall behind the sink, basically everything in a full circle. I've even seen him do it when he leans over to get some toilet paper to wipe himself after he's done, just completely forgetting that it's still coming out and getting more pee on the floor than in the bowl.

I second the idea of cleaning everything, top to bottom, and see if that helps with the smell. I've been using the Clorox natural cleaners ever since they came out and they do a great job and smell fresh and citrusy.

Hope this helped!

I've used vinegar (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water) in a spray bottle. Also, Nature's Miracle works pretty well too. Believe it or not, urine is not real germy so we avoid the harsh chemicals outide the bowl.

I'll have to check out solumel. I wonder where you get it?

I had this problem at my old house. I found that I thought I was cleaning it all but he hit things with his pee I didn't think about. I washed everything in that bathroom, the bathmats (especially the one on the toilet lid), shower curtain. Then I used the Lysol wipes to wipe down every surface and scrubbed around the edge of the toilet at the base of the floor as well as every inch of that toilet. I don't know how pee gets in some of those places. Plus, I bought a new toilet seat and I was surprised at how much pee had been caked under the little flap thingy's that hold the seat on there. Gross! Now, I wipe down the toilet, walls and baseboards every night while they are in the tub. Plus, I keep a reed diffuser in there. I haven't noticed the smell there anymore.

I had this problem too. The cherrios may work. What I found that worked for my son was for him to clean up after he had made the mess. I got the sponges and things down there and he had to physical take the cleaning products and things and get all the toilet bowl, the back of it and the floor where he had pee peed. He never did it again and the bathroom never smelled like stale pee and the floor was not wet. Hang in there. It's really frustrating especially after you have cleaned the bath and it smells nice and fresh only to have it smell like pee. I think I used Lysol or Pinesol and used that to clean it good.

The Cheerios idea or even a piece of toilet paper in the toilet as target practice worked for us. Also, I found that when my son had to help clean up the mess, he was more conscious of it. He tried harder because he hated cleaning it up. Good luck!

We use the Sol-U-Mel, too! Plus, since my son is still potty training (he'll be 3 in a few weeks), I use the Tough 'N Tender wipes for cleaning his potty chair, and whenever he has a #2 accident, I dump that in the toilet, and spray his pull-up with Sol-U-Gard before putting it in the trash, and I have NO PROBLEM with "little boy smell" in our (only) bathroom!!

In fact, I have *caught* my son cleaning his own potty bowl with the Tough 'N Tender Wipes on his own!!! :) We have just bought a new "potty seat adapter" to use when we are out running errands, and there is now a bag of the TNT wipes in his bag to clean the seat before we put it back in his bag...

(He also loves his bath soap and shampoo, too!!)

Good Luck!!

Wal-Mart use or may still carry something in the Pet section. I got it for when I was housebreaking our now 13 year old. It gets blood, etc out of stuff as well as all odors. At that time, it was called Puppy Solution.

I kept some on hand for when the my now 8 yr and 5 yr daughter was babies as well.

As for him missing the toilet, try putting a few cheerioes in the water for him to have "target practice" and see how many times he can hit them or move them around in the water. It may come down to you showing him how to hold it properly and staying focused. I went through the same with my son and even had to remove the throw rug for a while. It does get better, hang in there.

For the odors I recommend vinegar or bleach. For it to stop being necessary, I recommend having your son clean ip up himself. I realize that he will not do a good job and Mom will have to come in and actually clean up again, but this is what worked for my son when he was younger. He realized that if he did not want to get down on his hands and knees and possibly get "ugh....pee" on his hands, he needed to make sure that it ALL went into the potty. Now he has decided that he would rather sit down most of the time. That way he KNOWS that he will not have an accidental "over-spray." Whatever works. I'm just glad that the bathroom doesn't smell like that anymore. Now if I could actually get my daughter to use it. LOL

Solumel would work great...there's also a stronger version, botanical. Not only does it get the smell out, the stain out and is safe.

Good luck!!
