What is the best way to clean hardwood floors? Do you think water and vinegar is the best way? What about Murphy's Oil Soap? We just had ours finished a few months ago and I am still trying to find a great way to clean them. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I grew up with hardwood and have had hardwood my entire adult life. Watched mom experiment with things that were really bad (furniture polish namely).

In our old home I had the awful experinece of watching Murphy's literally eat the finish off the floor. From then it was strictly vinegar and water.

New house I have tried swiffer with not good results. Again went back to vinegar and water and on the occasion Bona- great product much more expensive. We reside in the country, have extra large dogs, two cats and a preschooler so I am cleaning floors often.

I use 1 c vinegar to 2-3 gal of water and if the floors really need scrubbed I had a bit of castile soap. Perfectly clean floors every time.

With that said we have been toying with the idea of a steam mop just haven't heard enough about them to make the leap.

Happy cleaning.

I recommend Bona hard wood floor cleaner. Its safe and won't ruin your floors in the long term. I buy mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond and use the 20% coupons from the mail. A gallon runs about $20 which has lasted me a long time!

Hi Jen,

We had the floors in our 60 year old home refinished 3 years ago. We were told my the company that refinished them to just use water, small amount of bleach & dish soap (on & off, if really needed). We have oak floors that are not stained, just finished with a clear coat. They still look great 3 years and 2 kids later. We were told the commercial floor cleaning products would make the finish look cloudy instead of smooth. If your floors have stain on them, I don't know if you should use the bleach. The company that finished our floors is Premier Hardwood Flooring in Avon, Ohio. They are great answering questions too.

Talk to the company who refinished your floors. I always just use water and a microfiber mop. However, if you want some "disinefectant" our hardwood floor company told us to use vinegar and water and NEVER anything else.

We actually just use water on a microfiber mop and use friction. Works fine for us! I have been wondering about a steam mop,but don't want to leave streaks.

I'm kind of surprised no one has suggested this already. I use Method Wood Floor Cleaner on my hardwoods. It works really well, smells wonderful (much better than vinegar and water), and best of all, no harsh chemicals, so my kids and dogs can run on it right after I finish without any concerns. You can buy at Lowe's, and I think Home Depot may carry it, too. Target used to carry it, but I don't know if they still do. Good luck.

I have a friend that installs hardwood floors and he said to use Bona. That's all I use and I love it so I purchased it for my daughter to use on her hardwood floors.

I like the way Murphy's oil soap cleans, but my husband does not. So, he uses a product called Bona when he mops, and I use Murphy oil soap when I do it.
